A video essay on Neoliberalism, the political philosophy established by Frederick von Hayek, Milton Friedman and the Mont Pelerin Society, and put into practice by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan's respective governments.
The philosophy was initially established at a Swiss Spa, under the guise of the Mont Pelerin Society (MPS). The founders of the society were concerned with the decline of individual freedoms, free speech and freedom of thought, and the rise of state power. Neoliberalism claims that many aspects of our lives should be run by the free market, and that the government should not be involved in the provision of certain goods and services.
In this essay I breakdown the world according to neoliberal thinkers, to show their essential market-based philosophy. I answer: "What is neoliberalism?" and "What is the effect of neoliberalism on society?"
This video was sponsored by the Cambridge Centre for International Research (CCIR). CCIR aims to make academic knowledge more accessible to the general public. This year, I am serving as a CCIR Fellow, to undertake unique public knowledge projects, in the form of three video essays on the topic of neoliberalism. Friedman said 'Government's don't have responsibilities - people have responsibilities'. Citizens of advanced societies in the West think that there government has a responsibility to organise the defence of their nations, to provide them with access to healthcare [even if not directly provided by the state] and to provide their children with an education. We also expect governments to invest in the infrastructure - roads, rail, water, sewage, energy provision [we expect the government to keep the lights on !]. I think the citizens are better judges of the situation than Friedman. Under Thatcher and her successors governments have sought to renege on their responsibilities with fairly disastrous results. Filthy beaches, rivers, expensive unreliable trains a collapsing health service have been the actual experiences under 'free market' policies. The promised 'shangri-la' has proved utterly illusory.

The arrogance of Mr. Friedman at 11'23" is simply flabbergasting. He obviously was so puffed up with his own importance, he replied the question made by the young man in the audience from the position of total belief the question wasn't even applicable or had any merit whatsoever. He clearly could no longer relate to anybody who wasn't like him. I do believe this is what ultimately happens to mostly everyone who becomes wealthy beyond what could be deemed a healthy point, and mostly certainly all politicians.

This is a big risk when people fall in love with their own ideas.

His arrogance is mirrored in a similar instance between Ayn Rand and an audience member at one of her media appearances. Rather than using the rationality she claimed to champion, she responded in a way that clearly displayed how incensed she felt at being forced to deign to acknowledge this poor audience member’s very legitimate question. Makes sense that these people also espoused such neoliberal ideologies.

@@Thefarunlitunknown I suppose the only thing we really need to know about Ayn Rand is that she spent her declining years living on welfare when she thought that nobody should receive such payments. She couldn't live by her own philosophy - why should anyone else ?
