The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand was the tournament that changed women’s football.
It was the tournament that broke ticket sale records, the tournament where new teams stepped out of the shadows and the tournament that crowned a new winner.
Alice Devine writes and illustrates the ups and downs of WWC23.

As a Jamaican I'm really proud of our girls Our federation here ignored them so much to the point where they had to set up a gofundme to raise funds in order to even get to the world cup in the first place Big up the Bob Marley foundation and Adidas for helping them out when our own federation tossed them to the side Hopefully our girls can now get the recognition they deserve. 🇯🇲

I'm from Barbados and was cheering for them all the way hoping they would be able to pull off one more upset. But big congrats to them for an excellent tournament. As you say, hopefully their federation will get its act together (like so many other federations it seems) and do right by their women's team. Especially since they got further than the men ever have.

The MOST WATCHED sporting event ever recorded in Australia. At least 11 million people (from a country of only 26 million people) watched the Matilda's play in the Semi Final against England (and that figure doesn't include the thousands of watch parties, public viewings and pubs showing the game). Sorry, but that wasn't a Philippines team. That was a USA team #2. Almost all born and raised there and most of them didn't even knew Philippines. Good World Cup but I found that quite odd and probably, somehow, shouldn't be allowed. I hope that this could be a wake up call so actual Filipinas, born and raised there, could start playing and making the team and a World Cup.

I'm Australian, and I'm on this RU-vid channel because of the Matildas performance in this cup. I haven't followed futbol before now, I don't even follow sports period, but there was a moment there where the Matildas were the biggest thing in Australia. Not the biggest thing in just women's sport. Not the biggest thing in sports. The biggest thing happening, period. Seeing a women's sports team become so popular without anybody being able to say they were being humoured, or any kind of sideshow, was amazing. And it's made me now more curious about this sport in general. I want to make sure the next time I watch the Matildas play, that I understand what's happening better.

@dipthongthathongthongthong9691
I think it’s important to remember that men had their first WORLD CUP in 1930 with previous international competitions organized. Women had to wait until 1991. To say nothing of the prohibitions on girls/women playing football in general, this is a huge disparity. Onwards and upwards!

As an Aussie i worry if many compatriots are getting ahead of themselves, setting themselves up for disappointment. Australia loves an event. World Cup hosting success does not necessarily translate to an upheaval of the Australian sporting and spectating landscape. Australia's honourable gritty preformance at Qatar didnt translate into bumper A-League crowds. 2x Rugby World Cup champions in the 90's hasnt seen Rugby Union come close to rivaling Rugby League and Australian Football. Just like with the Olympics, we may be glued to our TV sets and fill the stadium to watch blue ribbon events like the 100m sprint, while not knowing one sprinters name, nor to watch the sport again for another 4 years. These events attract a bandwagon for the glory of the nation first, the sport second. One of Australia's fondest cultural memories was the winning of the 1983 America's Cup. I can assure you we didnt all go out and by Yachts. Really proud of the Matilda's performance, and thrilled Aus & NZ pulled off such a successful tournament. I just want to keep expectations under control.

As an American I knew that our dominance in women's football was ending. Our development systems for women always sort of mirrored our development system for men's players, which ment that while it existed since the 70's it was always inefficient and not designed in a way that gets players to hit their ceilings. When other nations started taking women's football seriously and designing development systems mirroring their men's systems which always pushed players more and was more efficient, our time in the sun was always going to end in about 10 to 12 years when the women who had started in the systems at age 12 to 14 started hitting the prime of their pro careers.
@fromomelastocarcosa3575
@fromomelastocarcosa3575 Год назад
This is very prescient. If the US wants their women's team to do anything other than regress, it can't do what it does with every other sport. The sluice of US athletes that is so effective in many sports is just completely ill-suited to football and the differentiation in the US of soccer being a more traditionally middle class sport, rather than working class everywhere else in the world, means that the ineffiency of young-talent-to-pro conversions will just become greater and greater. The popularity of Basketball and its status as preferred working class sport is soccer's biggest barrier in the US and always will be. Very hard to keep competing with countries even with the population of the US when there is such a dominant alternative playground sport.
@dipthongthathongthongthong9691
1. Girls have many options during that pre and post pubescent window of development- lacrosse, volleyball, basketball, softball- both in school and at club level. 2. Pay-to-play remains a huge barrier for many families. And the number of money-grabbing competing “elite” clubs is bad for development. 3. Europe and Latin America already have decades of building academy infrastructure coupled with the passion for the sport. If these clubs invest heavily in women’s football it could relegate US women’s soccer to “also ran” for years to come.
@Valpo2004
@Valpo2004 Год назад
@fromomelastocarcosa3575 The cost of soccer and and other sports is a big factor, don't get me wrong, but a less discussed factor is amateur coaching and quality of competition. Until they are 18 a top player in our system won't have much contact with a professional coach who's only job is to develop players. In Europe they will spend that entire time with a pro coach. Also here they don't play against a lot of players who are going to be pros. They play against players who's parents can afford the travel team fees and against other high school players and later college players. In Europe the kids without a future pro career start getting weeded out, so by the time they are 18, they are playing almost exclusively against future pros. Maybe not every one of them will be playing in the top division but nearly every one of them their profession will be playing soccer. IMO our players never reach their ceiling due to this, and the only way to push themselves into their ceiling is to somehow get their kid into a European academy like Pulisic was. But this option isn't easily available to most players. This is why the USMNT is so loaded with players who just had an American parent but never grew up in the US. But obviously, we can't beat the best in the world this way.
@azerty1933
@azerty1933 Год назад
@@Valpo2004you don't need ressources to be good at football, it's all about growing up with and for the sport. A Brazilian kid in a favela isn't coached by pros and playing against futur pro yet that kid may become a superstar. In football there is more exemple of amazing players coming from nothing than players who had classes with pros when they were 7 To be great you need talent and opportunity. The US woman team was never good but there was a lot of opportunities for American female players. Other more talented countries are catching up on the giving opportunities side of things which is in turn making the US women's team irrelevant again

Spain could be a big favourites to win Euro 2024 as long as they played a good football like the womens team. In the previous tournament, they reached the semifinal, yet still lost to Italy on penalties, but the emergence of young talents like Pedri, Gavi, and even Champions League winning players Rodri can push this team to the highest. They had just won the Nations League two months prior, and if they maintained a consistency results (forgetting the 0-2 defeat over Scotland) in the qualifiers, I think Spain might be a big favourites along with none other than France.

Huge kudos to you for the video but it's instances like these where you make things about American or English teams so big is why people in general support teams other than England/USA.

Bit early to say that. Lots of people bandwagon, especially us in Australia. After everyone suddenly being a "diehard fan of womens football" here for the last 4 weeks, after we lost the semi literally the next day nobody cared anymore. It was the same in our 2006 run which got denied by a dubious Italy penalty. Nothing serious is going to change here, politicians were just playing the crowd by jumping on the bandwagon by announcing more cash for grassroots clubs, but still neglect that to register for most clubs you're paying ~$700 a season and that's on the low side. I know of run down local clubs charging $1k+ in Adelaide where they're playing on awful cracked and dry pitches and playing the same 3 teams every month. Gone are the days where all you had to pay for was a shirt and $2 for the match ball of every game - that's where and why AFL will never lose to soccer here because its incredibly cheap to play. Its very naïve to suggest its changed anything, but it gets clicks for going with the bandwagon.

There is no doubt that this has been the most watched female world cup. Indeed it is clear that the popularity of the game has grown. However, from a commercial standpoint I'm not sure if it is the same story. I heard a TV host claiming that tickets were sold for about 5 pounds and tickets were even given for free to encourage attendance. I'm curious to know whether the women's game has become more profitable or it is still financially dependent on revenue generated from the mens game.

I now know all the names of the players which to be honest I'd not put much time into before this world cup, I only followed the mens stuff really. I'll now definitely be tuning in to watch the girls play when they get back home, my personal favourites been Toone, Russo, James, and Greenwood. Earps and Bronze were fantastic also, the whole team did so well! It was a great tournament and it really shows Australia could host a mens World Cup easily (if the bloody people in charge of the country actually wanted too). Personally, i got very aware of it because one of my university career mates was a striker at national level and she really rallied other girls to join the sport and explore their talents. It was crazy to see a crowd even on their friendlies while the men teams weren't getting even half of the attention, indeed a good sign because i've genuinely felt that people was really noticing the will and love for the sport the girls had. How men and women are treated differently within all facets of sport is, disheartening and frankly dishonest. If a Goalkeeper makes an error they are criticised. It's a matter of fact, an example of a mistake. Unless they are a women, then it's not the mistake that's an issue. In fact it's not a mistake, it's an example of how men undermine women by holding them to the same standards as men. Which as we all know is what women want. Equality, to be treated the same as men. Except when it isn't a good thing for the woman, then it's not fair! It undermines all the forward strides, improvements in the standards and quality of the women's game. When your players refuse to accept responsibility for their mistakes, expect exemption from criticism, then they aren't professional footballers, they are professional victims. Well done women's football, unfortunately you are let down by the women!

I think this showed that the goal sizes do not need to be changed and if anything the long range goals add to the excitement
