In this video, we take a look at the sekai ("world") of the Soga brothers, through the main plays and dances that survive in the modern kabuki repertoire, and the actors and playwrights who shaped these characters and stories.
I've wanted to cover many different aspects of the Soga repertoire for a while, but the resulting video has been chaotic and underwhelming. I hope that at least you enjoy it to some extent, and that it serves as a starting point for a better thought out discussion of this wonderful genre in the future!
I would have liked to better explain the play Tsuwamono Kongen Soga (1697) and its connection to the existing plays better. You can find much more about this play and other related ideas in William James Lee's thesis "Genroku Kabuki: Cultural Production and Ideology in Early Modern Japan", which is publicly available online. I also would have liked to cover in more depth the play Ya no Ne (1729), but I had very little footage. There is a lovely English translation by Laurence Kominz, introduced and annotated with great detail, in the journal Monumenta Nipponica, which should also be easy to find. It is called "Ya no Ne: The Genesis of a Kabuki Aragoto Classic". Other plays that I would have liked to include if I had footage are Harukoma (1791) and the shin-kabuki Soga Monogatari (1914). Is there any other play that you think I should have included?
English translations of Kotobuki Soga no Taimen and Uirō Uri can be find in the book "Kabuki Plays on Stage Vol 1: Brilliance and Bravado", and Sukeroku in "Kabuki: Five Classic Plays".

A wonderful job,as usual. I'm fascinated how Kabuki, like Shakespeare, uses and reuses stories and themes. But nothing in the west compares with the Danjurō line. Now I'm off to find the Mandarin Duck dance!

Excellent video as always bro. I'm going to be direct with the questions here because I need to ask you something important below: 1. Besides Bandō Mitsugorō X, Ichikawa Danjūrō XIII and Kataoka Ainosuke VI, which actors have played Soga no Juro? 2. Can the Yoshiwara district (which I know existed in real life) be considered as if it were the Edo version of Kabukichō? By the way, what is the relationship between the infamous Kabukichō and the Kabuki Theater? 3. The important question I wanted to ask is: do you know what happened to my comment in the video about Tennōjiya House? I made a comment on that video and it just disappeared. It's frustrating because I didn't comment much and it's like they (RU-vid) deleted it at no cost. Explain to me what happened, please, because I'm very sad because I didn't comment anything wrong. Do you know what the hell happened?

1. It is a very commonly performed play, so I would say almost all actors of male roles have played either Gorō or Jūrō (or both) at some point, usually at least once during their 20s, and then reprise them if they have success as aragotoshi/wagotoshi. 2. Yes, I imagine you could say so. As for Kabukichō, I think I read somewhere that there were plans to build a large kabuki theatre there, but it never materialized. Yet somehow, the name stuck. 3. I'm really sorry that some of you comments keep disappearing. Could it be that your account has been shadowbanned for some reason? Perhaps for including links a few times? There is obviously nothing wrong with your comments, but as a lowly content creator on this platform, I have zero information or control over those matters.

@@KabukiInDepth Well, I understand (despite this unfortunate situation). I can't do anything about my old comment (unfortunately), but I have an important question that was in that comment: since Bandō Tamasaburō V had no children (that is, he had no heirs), what is the chance of Bandō Minosuke II become the next head of the Yamatoya House (especially given the fact that he is the son of Bandō Mitsugorō X, who was the head of the Yamatoya House prior to Tamasaburō V)?

I have no knowledge of the Yamatoya politics, but I'm not sure if Tamasaburō is the iemoto of the Yamatoya right now. He is definitely the most popular actor, but I haven't seen it stated anywhere, and there are more senior actors in the yagō, such as Bandō Shūchō V. It might be that the position is simply vacant until Minosuke is ready. Perhaps someone with more information can chime in.
