The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) named Friendship Hospital in Bangladesh, designed by Kashef Chowdhury of URBANA as the winner of the 2021 RIBA International Prize on January 2022.
This low-cost hospital building in Bangladesh was designed to work with and withstand the tangible climate change effects of rising sea water in the surrounding area.
Kashef Chowdhury has achieved a building designed with a human touch which is deftly integrated with its surroundings and celebrates local, and traditional crafted materials. The architect used the surrounding water to create a rainwater-collecting canal, which also creatively separates inpatient and outpatient departments.
Not only does this channel of water help with microclimatic cooling, it also provides a visual relief for patients and visitors. A series of courtyards also provide natural light and ventilation within the space.
Friendship NGO focuses on Disaster Relief Education Health & Nutrition and is headquartered in Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
To strengthen marginalized communities and empower people to reach their full potential through a needs-based, integrated development approach.
