For unnecessary context on the Mozart opera: the reason the title is Italian is because the text of most operas is not written by the composer but a librettist, and, in this case, the librettist for La clemenza di Tito was Caterino Mazzolà, who was Italian :)
I initially assumed that I was the only individual who found the sentence "Is that Austrian? That sounded Spanish" to be humorous. It is not my intention to disparage anyone; I am aware that my proficiency in the English language is not exemplary. However, I do believe that the act of confusing Spanish with Italian while simultaneously devising an entirely novel language for Austria requires a certain degree of expertise. Nevertheless, I continue to appreciate Tugg's content.

Many opera composers back then used an Italian libretto, even Georg Frederic Handel, the most famous British composer who actually wasn't even British. Handel's (sort of) contemporary Henry Purcell was an exception who wrote his operas (most notably Dido and Aeneas) in English, but few non-Brits know him since he died of pneumonia at age 36 when he stayed out too late partying with the guys in the orchestra after conducting a concert on a rainy London night and his wife locked him out of the house. Apparently the leeches and other treatments that were the height of medical science in 1695 couldn't save him.
My Dad has so much memorbilia from the 1964-1965 World’s Fair. His collection was estimated to be worth 12,000 USD. He never lets anyone see it, I don’t even know everything he has. He only has a few things out, like a mini globe-statue thing, pamphlets, mugs, plates, etc.
So many old people have super nice things but also refuse to let anyone see those things. It’s a weird af genre that somehow happens way more than you think.
Fun unnecessary history on Adolf Sax (because I wrote a paper on him and I need to use this knowledge somewhere): He was “a child condemned to misfortune,” (according to his own mother) and extremely accident-prone, including but not limited to: falling three floors and landing on his head, drinking a bowl of poisonous chemicals at age 3 thinking it was milk, being right next to a gunpowder explosion, sleeping in a room while newly varnished furniture was drying, and somehow falling unconscious into a river. In 1841, he had intended to debut the saxophone in the exhibition, but it was destroyed, allegedly, by a jealous competitor. When he moved to Paris in 1842, there was a mob of angry French instrument makers who were extremely against Sax’s success for some reason, writing angry articles, boycotting, and refusing to play if Sax’s instruments were included in the ensemble. Even after Sax secured a contract with the French military band in 1845, the mob (now known as the “United Association of Instrument Makers”) tried to sue Sax out of his success for the next two decades, causing him to declare bankruptcy three times in 1852, 1873, and 1877, leaving him to die in poverty in 1894

My dad was unemployed (he’d recently finished his 3-year stint in the Army) when the World’s Fair was held in Queens, NY, so he went multiple times and served as a tour guide for out-of-town relatives and family from Sweden and Norway (3 of my grandparents were immigrants).

Five houses of the "Century of Progress" exhibit from the 1933 Chicago Worlds Fair are now on display in the Indiana Dunes National Park. One house, "the Cypress House" showed the durability of cypress wood. Another house, "the House of Tomorrow" is currently being restored. There is "the Florida House", a bright flamingo pink house; the "Ferro-Armco house", showing metal as a construction material; and "the Rostone House", showing an artificial stone-like material used in construction. Another building from that same fair was from the "Pioneer Village" exhibit. This building is a replica of the Old North Church of Paul Revere's lore. It is now a private residence in the town of Beverly Shores. All of these buildings were moved to Beverly Shores from Chicago by using barges on Lake Michigan.

So, about the incubators. If I'm remembering correctly, the doctor who invented them actually couldn't put them in hospitals because they were so new and unproven, hospitals and doctors weren't interested and thought they wouldn't work. He used the world's fair and a "side show" idea to help get publicity for them, prove they worked, and help families who needed to use them.
Two notes: First, all that was from memory of an episode of The Dollop and/or Mysteries at the Museum and I didn't fact check myself, so there could be something I missed or made up in that. Secondly, it's still fucked up and I don't think the doctor paid the families any of the profits (though he didn't charge them to use the incubators and I think used most if not all the profits to invest in the incubators and keep everything running)

Chief among them was donald trumps uncle John trump, then a professor at MIT. He later became one of the pioneers of radiological medicine

They baby incurbation story is actually pretty interesting. Because eugenics was becoming increasingly popular at the time a lot of people were of the opinion of "if they weren't strong enought to live they won't pollute the genepool" which as we know is quite wrong. However through this exhibition the incubation technology was able to find funding and save the lives of countless children. Its a very fascinating story.

My dad was at the Seattle world's fair. And fun fact...Elvis did a movie called "It happened at the World's Fair" at the same time, and apparently he is in the background while Elvis is singing or dancing. 17:05 A lot of those buildings were just really cheaply made facades, the outsides looked nice but chances are it was probably mostly gypsum and particle board. The insides were mostly large empty rooms as well. Iirc most of them ended up just burning down eventually
You make learning fun. I have a really hard time reading or watching much educational content (I know this isn't exactly what you'd show your 9th graders in history class but I'm still learning), because I get distracted too easily or it doesn't even register in my head. But watching you is like listening to a friend info dump about something they love and honestly, that makes me pretty happy.

He also actively worked to steal as many as he could. To keep it from conmen like Thomas, and from the Governments of the world, too, who even then proved they only interests they had in inventions was to exploit them as forms of profit and/or weapons to increase the damage and death tolls they caused in wars. little bit of historical background: leopold was austrian emperor (hungarian king too, but that was just a formal title), head of the habsburg empire. in the 18th century, austria (basically the leader of the empire) was still formally a part of germany which at the time was a loose trading union of different german speaking small states, although the habsburg empire's official language was latin (because it was multi-national unlike other parts of germany) salzburg is located in upper austria and it's the third biggest city of that country. bohemia, as you said is now part of the czech republic and it has always been ethnically czech, that's why they wanted to form their own country. bohemia used to be a part of austria. in the napoleonic wars, the french conquered it but austria got it back after only a few years.

The World's Fair still exists, they have one every 5 years. 2020 was in Dubai, 2025 will be in Osaka, and 2030 will be in Saudi Arabia. I'm going to Osaka to attend next year.
