A little bit of history- Gottleib Daimler never intended to make a motorcycle as we know it. He was an engine builder who found that when testing new motors the results on the bench were often different from those gotten through practical application. He created this 'vehicle' so that he would have a rolling testbed for his engines. The only reason there is a seat is so that he could make critical adjustments on the fly.

The first commercial design for a self-propelled bicycle was a three-wheel design called the Butler Petrol Cycle, conceived of and built by Edward Butler in England in 1884
@pauls5745
@pauls5745 6 лет назад
+Michael von Pallutz huh? commercial? ? look up Butler Petrol Cycle, built by Merryweather Fire Engine co., in *1888*, and by 1890 Butler gave up on velocycle development as he says in 1890 bcs "authorities do not countenance it's use on roads", and my guess, presumably also bcs of the Red Flag Act of 1865. Your claim of 1884 is historically inaccurate tho. Steam velocipedes (steam-powered bikes w/no pedals) existed in the late 1860's. Pierre Lallement of France in 1863 is credited with the 1st bicycle which then caused _countless_ others to then install cranks and pedals on their velocipedes and the existing steam-powered 'pedes as well and are the 1st motorized bicycles, an no doubt sold to friends as one-offs which might have spawned specialized builders as early as 1872 Example replicas of early 1870's bicycles, steam velocipedes and the addition of cranked pedal drive to aid in taking off (presumably) are not that hard to find authenticated pics of, but whether or not they were made commercially is unclear. Do some research.

@mspenrice
@mspenrice 11 лет назад
I make that a 264cc engine... right? Though with that compression it's probably equivalent to about 50cc in the modern world... running at very low rpm. All up power is about that of an electric boost bicycle, hence the training wheels as there's no pedals for human power input! Very neat to see it running and actually usable as some kind of transport, even if it only does about 5mph. Plenty of space to add four more cylinders and get some much scarier (for 1885!) speed out of it...

In this video, it seems to be just a good replica because of the brand new frame and all the others parts ...... and it had no little wheels on both sides. DANY (France - French Riviera)

The first steam powered motorcycle, the Michaux-Perreaux steam velocipede, can be traced to 1867, when Pierre's son Ernest Michaux fitted a small steam engine to one of the 'velocipedes'

the design created by Sylvester Roper in 1868 predates this design of a mid-1870s steam velocipede, and he is credited with creating the 1st motorcycle. see a replica in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pj3c64fqCiI.html this recreation somehow has omitted the pedals and crank as you can see from an image search for them and the frame is only approximately recreated. Resources are sketchy as automotive history is much more well documented than bicycle and motorcycle archives are. still a nice machine and should be appreciated as a piece of history

@Steam_City
@Steam_City 4 года назад
@ it was configured like a motorcycle, it had an engine mounted on it, like a motorcycle, and it was built and ran in the 1860s. But, it's the same BS technicality, that says Kark Benz invented the car in 1886, eventhough a steam powered road vehicle was built in France in the 1760s, steam and internal combustion engine powered carriages in the 1820s, steam powered busses, (not trams/trolleys) in the 1830s, the oldest car in existence was built in 1884 and is steam powered, and still driving. And, that Benz actually built his car in 1885.

Also the world's first internal combustion vehicle of any kind, just edging out Otto Benz's own pioneering motorwagen, which probably should have been emphasised rather more. That both of them ended up making usable machines in the same year in neighbouring cities but not knowing of the other's existence until after the fact is one of history's odder coincidences. Can you imagine the feeling of the first ride on that thing, not knowing that it was the dawn of a new era, but still knowing that you were almost certainly the first person to have ever done such a thing? Odd, though, I rather thought it would idle much more slowly than that ... the first hand account of the engine's development (by Daimler's wife IIRC...) included a mention of spending a couple of nights once it was "perfected" enough to work at all just sitting watching it and listening to the heartbeat-like putt-putt noise it made. Probably like 200-300rpm at best. This sounds more like high hundreds or even knocking on the door of four figures... (of course, they might be gassing it up a little on purpose, and more especially so after it got moving... or possibly that was Benz and his wife instead. I have a feeling, after all, that Daimler initially preferred a 2-stroke system and so the information on the board seen at the start is somewhat incorrect. It would also account for the faster rhythm even though grandfather-clock engines didn't tend to spin very fast...)

Under no circumstances can this machine be considered the world's first motorcycle. It lacked several of the most fundamental characteristics that define what being a motorcycle is, such as having 2 wheels, the ability to lean, and its mode of steering. All this is overlooked by the existence of the Daimler's internal combustion engine. So wrong. The title of first proto-motorcycle must go to either the Michaux-Perreaux or the Roper, invented years earlier.

The first car:What Was The First Car? A Quick History of the Automobile for Young Peopleby William W. Bottorffcugnots.jpgSeveral Italians recorded designs for wind driven vehicles. The first was Guido da Vigevano in 1335. It was a windmill type drive to gears and thus to wheels. Vaturio designed a similar vehicle which was also never built. Later Leonardo da Vinci designed a clockwork driven tricycle with tiller steering and a differential mechanism between the rear wheels.A Catholic priest named Father Ferdinand Verbiest has been said to have built a steam powered vehicle for the Chinese Emperor Chien Lung in about 1678. There is no information about the vehicle, only the event. Since Thomas Newcomen didn't build his first steam engine until 1712 we can guess that this was possibly a model vehicle powered by a mechanism like Hero's steam engine, a spinning wheel with jets on the periphery. Newcomen's engine had a cylinder and a piston and was the first of this kind, and it used steam as a condensing agent to form a vacuum and with an overhead walking beam, pull on a rod to lift water. It was an enormous thing and was strictly stationary. The steam was not under pressure, just an open boiler piped to the cylinder. It used the same vacuum principle that Thomas Savery had patented to lift water directly with the vacuum, which would have limited his pump to less than 32 feet of lift. Newcomen's lift would have only been limited by the length of the rod and the strength of the valve at the bottom. Somehow Newcomen was not able to separate his invention from that of Savery and had to pay for Savery's rights. In 1765 James Watt developed the first pressurized steam engine which proved to be much more efficient and compact that the Newcomen engine.The first vehicle to move under its own power for which there is a record was designed by Nicholas Joseph Cugnot and constructed by M. Brezin in 1769. A replica of this vehicle is on display at the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers, in Paris. I believe that the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D. C. also has a large (half size ?) scale model. A second unit was built in 1770 which weighed 8000 pounds and had a top speed on 2 miles per hour and on the cobble stone streets of Paris this was probably as fast as anyone wanted to go it. The picture shows the first model on its first drive around Paris were it hit and knocked down a stone wall. It also had a tendency to tip over frontward unless it was counterweighted with a canon in the rear. the purpose of the vehicle was to haul canons around town.The early steam powered vehicles were so heavy that they were only practical on a perfectly flat surface as strong as iron. A road thus made out of iron rails became the norm for the next hundred and twenty five years. The vehicles got bigger and heavier and more powerful and as such they were eventually capable of pulling a train of many cars filled with freight and passengers.
