They actually don't just live on Rottnest Island (Dutch for rat nest since Abel Tasman's first mate thought they were rats), but the neighboring island of Bald Island. Plus there's a reserve for breeding and reintroducing them to the mainland near Perth. The word quokka comes from the native Nyunga (the local aboriginal tribe) word "gwaga" meaning "little digger". They hunted them until they went extinct on the mainland and have helped bring their numbers back to almost non-endangered. Neat little animals.

I've heard the quokkas are "nippy" and may not appreciate being petted. This guy seems to know what he's doing, though. He's patient and gentle with them -- best way to befriend any wild critter. BTW, the quokka "smile" is just their natural face conformation and not an expression of happiness. Damn, I hate to admit that; gawd, but they're adorable!

Quokka has a very high affinity for people. Most wild animals run away or threaten people when they approach them, but quokka first comes out and shows curiosity. Inhabits in wetlands and wastelands, and lives in flocks and sells tunnels. It is a herbivorous animal, and it may eat grass or a leaf in vegetable food. The pregnancy period is 27 days. It gives birth to one cub at a time. Quokka is an animal that lives in Rottnest Island and its surrounding books in southwest Australia. It has a small and compact size to fit a cute face. It weighs 2.5 ~ 5kg and is 40 ~ 90cm in size, similar to a pet dog or a cat. The face looks like a koala slightly, and the body looks like a kangaroo or a wallaby. Like kangaroos and similar species, they put their cubs in their pockets. Due to these polite behaviors, taking pictures with quoka is fashionable in Australia. Quokka has a pet sized body. Besides, nurturing quokka is illegal. Because they are endangered, Australia government protects them. In 2015, the protection policy for quokka was reinforced by two Frenchmen. In April 2015, two French tourists who visited Rottnest Island have committed terrible atrocities, emitting fire to Quokka. Fortunately, the quark survived, but the burns were exposed, and these two tourists were fined $ 4,000 in Australian money. For reference, the quark, unlike the cute look, is threatened by the predator, he throws the young to the predator and goes away. It seems that the survival instinct was triggered while the predators were not threatened much and did not know how to deal with predators. However, I think that this kind of behavior will be a sort of pure charm.

Quokas used to be found on the mainland South West Western Australia but like most Wildlife it lost its habitat from logging and land degradation. Ferral cats also spread a disease which can cause blindness in these marsupials. Much respect for showing what great little beings these guys are!

They live on other islands too!! And the thing is no animal has ever preyed on them so their natural instincts aren’t to run off when they see an animal, they’re very friendly!! :)
