Sam.... The reason you take so much water isn't just in case you get thirsty. The reason you take so much water is in case you have a problem with your vehicle and are stuck on the side of the road for hours. You said it yourself, petrol stations are about every 150km. It's not like you can just go down to the corner store and buy a drink. Or in your case a coffee. Oh and we don't have rattlesnakes in oz.

?? Most Aussies have been travelling. No idea where you got your information. As you were told the reason to take extra water is in case something goes wrong. Most travellers don’t cross as quickly as possible. They explore and look at things. If you drive an hour down some random road and your car breaks down it could be a few days of waiting or few hours of walking to find help.

Most Aussies haven't driven the Nullarbor, so their advice comes from what their parents told them about the trip from the 1970s. However, having water is super, super important when you're in the desert. On any of those side road you drove down, had you hit a roo, you could have rolled the car or put yourself in a position where it was hard for passers-by to find you. Having more water than you need is cheap insurance. I've done the trip twice, and the first time was in a Mazda2. I left Melbourne on Saturday morning and got to Perth late on Sunday night, and I didn't drive past sunset on the Saturday. Just brought a swag and rolled it out a little ways off the highway. I was draining the fuel tank every two hours and almost ran out on the 90 Mile Straight (I had a small jerry can with me, thankfully - and loads of water). Interesting fact: the Mazda2 tops out at just over 170kph because it can't cut through the air. Also, Sam being scared of whales is THE most Sam thing in the entire fucking world.

I'm from Perth Western Australia and I've done the trip a few times, the only thing that real Aussies are truly scared of are the 1. the cops, 2. livestock/roos that'll total your car and fly through your windscreen but most importantly 3. its a mind numbingly boring drive after the first few hours

Wonderful footage Sam, this is the video to show people what the Nullarbor is like, you've captured it perfectly. I loved my road trip across in both directions. It's a lovely drive, and I agree it's not empty or as desolate as people make out. The water / fuel concerns people have is of running out. Phone reception is patchy to non-existent, so you need to be prepared for a worst case scenario.

I've personally done this trip 3 times in a VW touareg and possibly looking at doing it again this year but in a Renault Clio 172/182. It's not too bad but you do have the occasional interception with a kangaroo, especially dangerous if driving into/towards the sun. Also fatigue is a massive thing to watch out for (nothing is stopping you from swaying into oncoming traffic or 80ton road train).

Great job Sam 👍 I have done that trip a few times and if you give yourself plenty of time (4+ days is comfortable to me) then it is very enjoyable especially if you are with others. Most fear mongers are those who have never done the drive and probably never actually even been to Australia 🇦🇺 let alone crossed our great country by car! I would recommend to try and avoid driving at dusk or at night if you can as that is when most of the kangaroos 🦘 become active. During the day they are often under the shade of a tree having a nap 💤 Anyway, welcome to Perth Sam, it is a wonderful place to call home.

Most of the horror stories about crossing the Nullarbor date back to the time when it was dirt road They only started sealing the road in 1969 and didn't finish until 1976 so it is still fairly recent as major highways go Back then it was much more of an adventure but don't underestimate the need to carry extra water People have died of heatstroke out there quite recently when they have broken down away from the main road and have run out of water It can still be a very dangerous place if things go wrong due to the isolation

I wouldn’t recommend giving people advice like that Sam especially since you made the trip once in a new very reliable vehicle, the advice people gave you is 100% the advice that people need to be given, my father in law is a truck driver and he said that the amount of times he came across people who were injured, stranded and sometimes even dead due to not listening to people was shocking. Please don’t give out “tips” that could seriously risk someone’s life.

Joe: F.I.S.H. Paragraph 1. The phenomenal universe which can be detected with our five senses is the manifestation of the unmanifested One Reality which most persons call “God”. Therefore, “God” is not a SEPARATE Person, distinct from His/Her creation but is fully omnipresent in the manifest universe - you, who are reading these words are That! The highest philosophy is known as “panentheism”, that is, God being one with but inconceivably and simultaneously distinct from the material universe. So the One Reality (God) is acting through each and every living creature (as well as the inanimate, to a lesser degree) in order to experience Himself in this play of duality, to which William Shakespeare famously alluded in his work “As You Like It”, when he scribed “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” This “story of life” has been preordained since the beginning of the universe (the so-called “Big Bang”). Therefore, free-will does not exist on the individual level but only on the universal plane, since there is only one Being in existence. To read the remaining thirty-nine paragraphs of “A Final Instruction Sheet for Humanity”, which the God of all gods has graciously given to His Prophet on Earth, email: prophet4god@icloud.com with the acronym “FISH” in the subject field.

I have a friend that drove 100 miles in 55 minutes on part of that road in a 1969 Holden Monaro 327 in 1970! I have been across it myself 3 times , 2 in a '69 brand new GT Ford Falcon from Perth to the Gold Coast and return non stop in 3 days and back again 10 days later with 4 drivers when the road was not fully sealed. Also in 1970 in a 1969 Triumph 205 PI on my own. Great drive

Nice mate. I`ve hitchiked this road in the Road Train with around 60 years old Steve. The only guy willing to take me after 26h of waiting on petrol station. and asking people to give me a ride. He was driving straight, no sleep, just food stops, for more than 20 hours. Somewhere in the middle of the night, in the middle of the road, having a conversations, i think about cigarettes, Steve said: - 'And then, when i was in jail...' I`ve asked for details and it was because of some troubles with woman and money. That`s alright i though to myself and we`ve continued a conversation :)

Drove the Nullarbor 20 years ago, in a well knackered Holden Commodore. After 12 months driving around Aus, it was probably the hardest long distance I did. It didn't hold any great romance or excitement for me, unlike the Northern Territories, and was (still is) a lot more sparsely populated than Queensland. I just wanted to get to Perth. The sun was so hot I had to wet rags and put them on my lap, the heat was that painful.

The R.F.D.S on the emergency airstrip sign stands for Royal Flying Doctors Service, it's there so a plane can pick up sick or injured people. Local emergency services like the highway patrol will temporarily close the road for them to make a landing/takeoff

Ah this takes me back to family holidays when I was a kid. We must have done the Nullarbor trip at least five times each way, but in way less luxury and time than this fine couple have done. For a time we lived in a town called Carnarvon and we drove from there to Adelaide in my Dad's clapped out Series IIIC Land Rover. No A/C, no car stereo, vinyl bench seats in the middle of summer and five days driving. That was pretty rugged. All told it was about 4,000km. There were other times as well that were done in way less time where the old man drove 12-14 hours each day, with stops only for fuel. That's hard yards. The advice about not driving at night is absolutely spot on. The 'roos are everywhere.
