The World's Most Controversial K-Pop Group

K-Pop, or Korean Idol pop music, is a 5 billion dollar industry whose music, fashion, stars and lifestyle have taken the world by storm. But while K-Pop’s fanbase has diversified, most K-Pop idols haven’t - so what happens when white people try and become K-Pop idols themselves?
On this episode of 'MINORITY REPORTS,' VICE sent Lee Adams to Seoul, South Korea to meet EXP Edition, the world’s first non-Korean K-Pop group. The group’s 4 members - Koki Tomlinson, Frankie DaPonte, Hunter Kohl and Šime Košta - believe you don’t need to be Korean in order to do K-Pop. When they debuted, EXP Edition faced a lot of criticism from mostly non-Korean K-Pop fans, who claimed the group was misappropriating Korean culture. EXP Edition maintains this pushback happens to anyone trying to break into a new genre of music - but is the group going too far in their attempt to be K-Pop idols?
We explore the wildly popular world of K-Pop and raise questions of where the line is drawn between cultural appreciation vs cultural appropriation and who should actually draw it.

Andres Leon People in China today do not face systemic racism and oppression from white people and view the fact that American companies are profiting off of their culture is "embracing it" rather than appropriation and borderline fetishization. They have completely different experiences than their Chinese immigrant counterparts and probably have no idea what cultural appropriation is since there is no one in China to appropriate their culture.

@@alex.chan__ There is no such thing as cultural appropriation. Culture spreads all the time through migration. This is why countries close to each other tend to have similar cultures. It wasn't until the silk road that cultures started really spreading between continents. Many things you may think are apart of your culture may not be. Many Asian countries are westernizing which from your point of view would be considered appropriation. Ever since cultures existed they have always been exchanging back and forth all the time. If people don't want their cultures being adopted by other cultures then they shouldn't migrate or let anything culturally significant leave the country.

@@shawnmiranda8521 No, I don't think mispronouncing words in other languages is ok . If you are learning the language and you're making mistakes ofc its ok, if its an accident its ok, but in this case I'm pretty sure they meant accent. If you have an accent you're considered not fluent in english and other languages but people normalize this wrong idea in other languages or at least when a native english speaker speaks another language. If you're flat out mispronouncing words its understandable for you to face ridicule, not right in all cases though. You should always make an effort when pronouncing words in a different language but when you're already fluent and people want to harass you for having an accent that's never acceptable.

So true it’s like a caucasian person singing an African rap song and dressed up as a stereotypical rap artist, cruseing and say the n word. Their like wowitsvicky. Kpop is now kinda like Asian cultural music in a sorta way. It’s seems like cultural inappropriate. If they where mixed or rise in an Asian backroad it would have been acceptable. Because their are a lot of Kpop idols who are not from Korea but has a Asian backround. Like Koki’s talent would be amazing if he trained and debuted in a different group But didn’t. They never worked as hard and trained like the rest of Kpop groups. I tried to like it but it’s too cringy. There’re not a good group in general and are lacking in a million ways. Even if they had trained they would still like in image and dancing in my opinion.

If you have dreams of succeeding in my country, you appreciate my country enough and you have genuine intentions in place and back them up with hard work, I will cheer for you. These guys are clearly that. They have no other intentions or ulterior motives other than making it as artists in a genre and culture that they like which is Korean music. Kpop and Korean music as a whole is a global genre alongside being a musical genre originating in Korea and for me, as long as you have genuine love and intent to understand and learn my culture and my country, were all good.

refrigerator salesman they still aren't at the skill level I would consider ready to debut. There are plenty of idols that are from other asian countries or are asian american/canadian etc., but are still at a higher level of skill. May it be because they had more training or innate abilities and they also have to adapt to a new culture. Also they usually don't let trainees debut if they aren't fluent in korean or they will get super short parts until they are fluent. EXP got a lot of unreasonable hate, but they still don't live up to the Kpop standart just yet imo. Hopefully that will change with more training and hopefully people will accept them if they come out with high quality music^-^

BTS outtalented and outsold sis I AM perfectly fine with them being white??? I could literally care less about what race they are. The only reason I don’t like them is because they obviously did NOT train even 1/5 the amount a normal kpop idol or trainee would. I really appreciate the fact that they are trying to improve themselves after debut but I’m just saying that maybe just MAYBE if they trained as normal trainees do and learned basic korean pronunciation before debut then they would get as much hate.

@@starlight.genesis It's cause they aren't actually asian, even tho i don't really have a problem with non asians in kpop. (although there is a Korean member). But that's not only why, they don't speak korean and they didn't really train that well. Their song was badly mixed and produced too. Also they kinda act koreabish? idk tho Also, some parts of their choreography has been stolen from everglow and Blackpink, editing was stolen from TXT. But the main reason people have hate for them is because of false rumours made by antis. Some of the rumours are that they are in the same company as Oli London, another one is that one of the members shipped herself with Jungkook, and another that their fandom name is "Koochie" , also they supposedly called jennie lazy, I'm not sure about that tho. Also a rumour is that their "lightstick" (which looks terrible) got released, which is false too. Overall i think they have potential if they trained harder and if their company didn't steal everything. So yeah that's my explanation lol

I was very ready to hate this group but after watching the entire video I changed my mind. Hearing that Korean citizens don’t have a problem with it, made me feel weird for my initial anger towards this. I did have to step back and remember, I myself am not Korean, and yet I felt the initial anger and need to protect k pop which I have no right to protect or ownership of to do so. Such an interesting topic. As an American I still feel a little weird about it but I think for the wrong reasons. As an asian (though not Korean) I don’t really have a problem with this at all.

K-Pop: Korean Pop Music • They are in Korea, singing in Korean, Under a Korean entertainment group. Therefore they're a k-pop group... They may not be Korean but it doesn't matter... I'm pretty sure there's also a whole Chinese K-pop group too but no one has a problem 😂 chill tf out it's not that serious let them pursue their dreams... You guys are saying because they weren't trained they're not a k-pop group but they said they've been doing music, theater, etc. their whole lifes so they're basically trained to be in the entertainment industry... And at least they're trying... I would love to be apart of a k-pop group but I know since I'm black that would never happen so for them to do this is shows that maybe other races other than Asian probably can do it.. you just ofc have to work harder... As K-Pop is, as you said by definition, Korean pop music, many would assume it to only be produced by Koreans, or others that LOOK to be Eastern Asian. However, with examples such as Alex from RANIA, Sam Okyere, Han Hyeon Min, and others, you can DEFINITELY make it as a K-Pop idol, despite your appearance. Really, you can easily make it into the industry if you have talent, drive, education, and some good looks (in usual cases with entertainment companies). If you have the will to, go one ahead and make it happen! K-Pop and the Koreas as a whole are fairly new, and who knows what can be said a few years along the line? The thing is: 1. Many Koreans and K-Pop fans love the beauty and talent that the natives of Korea have, which is why they like to see them more. Because they’re USED to it. However, with groups such as this and others that will definitely be created, anything can change. 2. You’ll need to work fairly harder. And this isn’t just for African-Americans, Africans, or other races that may have darker skin tones. This can be said about anyone who isn’t Korean. It’ll be very hard to make it because of Korea’s beauty standards, but many still do. You’ve got this! *FIGHTING!!*

They are not good, BUT they are also not THAT bad. I like to see myself as an open-minded conservative. I don't think that this is "cultural appropriation". I will admit it is a bit cringy, but I am not closed to the idea. I actually like their song Stress. It is cool. One thing that I must say is a little messed up is that other idols get famous through YEARS AND YEARS of training in kpop training industries, but that is the only major thing that bothers me about the idea. I think they should let other races into these training camps. They are definitely worse at dancing, pronunciation, and they look weird doing it...but who am I to hate this? If they got a little better at particularly dance and pronunciation I think this is GOOD progress in a music genre that I love. Rap/hiphop has been a primarily black culture genre, however we got Eminem and now in the 2020s MANY more white artists. Is that bad?

I haven’t listened to any of their songs yet as of writing this comment, but I kind of agree. They have the same feel as that of Chad Future. Trying too hard to look cool. They seem relatively more authentic though since they actually took the time to learn Korean (and not just memorize Korean lyrics) and spent time IN Korea. I’m not averse to their ages, but it DOES look awkward. It could also be because they don’t have the formal training unlike actual Korean teens who trained specifically for this. They were just gathered up by a student and started practice from there. Hence the feeling of inauthenticity and awkwardness. Plus if they started doing this at that late an age, they’re not gonna be able to do more interesting and complex choreographies. Edit: Okay I just watched their Stress MV and hey it wasn’t that bad. it's not the fact that they're not korean, there are foreigners in kpop, it's the fact that their pronunciation isn't good and that they skipped the training process. there are other kpop idols that haven't trained and i don't even trust that. they are lacking too much to be considered a good group. if they trained and got up to standard, i would have no problem with it. they do seem cute together and genuine, but i can't get behind the fact that they just got a free pass into the industry.

White people age physically at a faster rate than other groups of people
@TuAmigoElMorrocoy
@TuAmigoElMorrocoy 6 лет назад
They don't really "age" faster, their skin is more sensitive and prone to damage so it just gets damaged more as they age. But studies about development, fertility, onset of menopause, menarchy and life stepectancy actually have shown that white people ten to mature and age at a slower rate. That is probably a good thing for whites, since it means whites live longer lives and have longer fertility periods, they have better succès when it comes to fertility treatments at older ages... This might not be inherently biological though, and external factors like poverty and stress can affect the rate at which you age, black people face more poverty and stress and this is linked to early sexual development in children and shorter life spans

As a Korean, I wish the best for them. Americans need to chill out with the whole cultural appropriation thing. Whenever something Korean starts to become a mainstream thing, whether it's a musical phenomenon or an entertainment thing, Koreans are glad that people around the world are embracing it. People are idiots and think you have to be of a certain race to be of that culture of said race. Being of a race doesn't mean you download a bunch of culture data when you're born. It's not the matrix where you turn a certain age and automatically learn ancestral music that dates back to your root or modern culture. You can endow yourself with culture by living in a place where those cultural practices are taught. Cultural appropriation is just people getting away with racism by saying XYZ can't XYZ. People that cry cultural appropriation are doing the same things white supremacists wish they could do. Which is tell white people they shouldn't integrate with other races in away way, shape, or form. These people are too stupid to understand this though.
@bloodycinephile
@bloodycinephile 5 лет назад
@@erockstoenescu6171 Well the modern pop music was pioneer by ABBA and other similar pop groups at the time. ABBA didn't invent pop music they pioneered it. What I mean by pioneer is that they took other forms of music and made something distinctly different. No genres of music just pop out of thin air. They are all adopted from other forms of music which spread all over the world. Pop came from rock n roll. If you go back further rock n roll came from jazz and soul. There was definitely pop music before ABBA but it was ABBA that pioneered the more modern pop style that is still used today.
