Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

About this game:

he acknowledge in the comments last episode the fact that he was not paying attention to the capacity meter (or even knew about the game mechanic), and going forward he will. However remember he records these in batches so your probably looking at episode 6 or 7 before there is a chance he might start actually paying attention to the capacity meter.

In his defence, it really isn't clear that you can do that because of the way the starting deck sets you up. The tutorial mission, and unless you actually take some 0 costs, prevent you from naturally seeing that until later runs where you decide to take imps, which are cards that newer players will generally not see the value of.

@@Northernlion Huge tip brother, PyreChomper is a huge card if you get it before the second gem, there is a very good chance that you'll be able to get thee eternal upgrade on it, combined with the more space gem and you have constant +8 energie and more space.

Glad to see the pivot onto imps. They've got some mad usefulness. Also, nuking your own low-health minions is a very viable strategy. Just make sure you start putting those imps in front too. They get to soak up a hit.

@@2011supergamer it is def. vague and hes not the only one to make this mistake. But one of the boss rewards makes it sort of explicit. And, a number of times, NL will go to play a monster and the display will show that he can place it on a level that he is assuming is already full (a big white circle will show on that floor indicating a spot is open). And NL recognized all this in an earlier vid. He explicitly talked about the capacity boss reward and recognized that each monster card displays its capacity and that bigger monsters have higher capacity requirements. I don't know why that info. was immediately jetisoned from his brain or how he got stuck on just 2 monsters per floor after getting that knowledge.

I can't tell whether or not he realized you're allowed to buy and then reroll. Still would have taken the multistrike even if you couldn't, but that's because multistrike demon friend is nearly a wincon by itself. Edit: Ah, he bought then rerolled later on. Still, you've gotta see multistrike friend before you believe it.

NL, the units take up a certain amount of space on each floor. That is what limits the number of units. You can have more than 2 units per floor if they are small enough. For example, the first floor has 6 space, and a train steward takes up 2, so you could have 3 train stewards on the first floor.

More importantly having high damage at the back. As in in the last round he kept on putting armour on the 30 attack guy, which moved him to the front. If he buffed the 3 attack guy, he would've taken the blows and the 30 attack would've been able to attack a few more times.

Hey NL, loving the series so far. I'm pogged out that you chose to give this one some more content. A note for improving your gameplay: You can place a number of units up the number of pips you have on the floors. This means that since you have 5 pips on each floor at the base you can have 5 pips worth of units out there. So, you don't have just a 2 unit hard limit on each floor. I don't know that the game actually explained that outright, but you could have 2 medium bois and an imp as well on the floor. You can tell by the number of pips on the tops of the cards who can fit where. I'm glad it seems like you're enjoying the game so far, hopefully this can help you secure the W

Some tips I've picked up: You almost never want to purge units early on. Unless you're super high on spell damage, you should focus on increasing unit capacity and trying to get out as many units as possible on your bottom two floors. Keep in mind Imps and Train Stewards can, if nothing else, act as shields for your squishier units!! One of my favorite synergies is putting Endless on one of the imps. For the Welder Imp that means free 11 shield each turn for one of your units, and for the other one (i forget its name) that means an EXTRA 5 MANA EACH TURN which is pretty insane.

Yeah, you wanna get rid of as many non-units as possible WHILE not getting rid of units. Not get rid of some units in favor of other units, since that won't increase the overall density of units in your deck.

NL I feel like the early train steward removals are so much worse than removing a torch. You should be able to fill your train so more chaff early is probably pretty good

Unlike StS removals are entirely situational. In particular when you have Endless units removing the Stewards is fine. Just ignore the top floor, and place Endless units up there as they die to the boss. If you have Endless you have an ENDLESS supply of chaff.

another concept you may need to grasp is that... imps are perfectly sacrificable units. Putting like a welder helper in front of your champion, letting it die as soon as someone reaches that floor, thus clearing space for another unit, is a perfectly valid strat

NL, biggest mistakes you're making besides that you can put as many units as capacity allows, is your ordering, imps can go in front and soak an entire turn while letting big boys get hits in. Same for the rock in front of your 30 damage demons, if he lives for 3 more turns because the rock dies first, that almost 100 damage! Loving the series!

NL, think of the Imps more like spells that act as meat shields more than as actual units. You can summon them to the front and still buff the units on that floor. That way you get the buff then they eat a hit for the unit you just buffed and they die opening a spot for an actual unit. They're basically just a strictly better spell card because they buff, defend, and die.

The imps are becoming my favourite part of the game. They are like a secret weapon. ALSO the welders are good, because there is a great card they synergise with "battering ram". You'll see just how good those 2 are together

I know you’ve got plenty of comments but one tip I haven’t seen is, when you played that card that gave armor but moved the unit to the front, you shouldn’t put the armor on your attacking unit. Sure it gets stronger, but by moving it to the front you miss out on all the damage it could have done while your tank gets hit. I don’t think that would have saved the last fight, but it would have been much closer. Enjoying the series though, filling the StS void!

Slay giving you +20 is basically the same as slay giving you +10 when you have multi strike, except that you can kill two enemies in a turn

NL welder helper is a 1 heat card. You could've played him on the second floor on multiple occasions to give armor to the prince while also getting the imp powered up from the second units rage bonus! EDIT: Saw you already noticed this, cant wait for more of this series it's like when you first started STS, it's superb!

I rarely ever comment. But 18:16 hurt my brain. He could have wiped the first floor and established an amazing presence there. 2nd floor enemies would have died anyway AS HE SAYS HIMSELF! But a second later he throws that thought out and puts 2 units there. NL what are you doing?

Just here to add to the public effort of getting NL to realise he can have more than two units on a floor

If you ascend or descend a unit, they don't count to your max so you can have one floor stacked with 6 units if you want or more. Also NL please you can have a welder helper with 2 other units since they only take 1 space and not 2 and you have 5 of them each floor.

advice for the future, high health in front with low health high damage in back. means you get tanks you can focus on healing/armoring up thus soaking up damage so the damage dealers you can just buff and out put mass damage.
