Very interesting! The culture, at the time the Crusades began, explains why the Crusades were necessary and why they were so enthusiastically supported by Western Christendom. Viva Christo Rey!

LuvBorderCollies I hope real crusades history does a program on that , it's long overdue. He's the most successful leader when dealing with the Turks, he's the most accomplished leader from the Balkans and NEVER lost a battle to Turks in his 40 year reign of moldovia en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_III_of_Moldavia.

another issue to clarify , the roman Mediterranean was fully encircled by the Roman empire and Roman law, so it was safe whereas the Mediterranean during the 11th century era was not dominated by one power despite the more powerful Islamic presence - moreover, please note that Iran , Afghanistan , North Africa ( except Egypt ) were not predominantly Christian as the time of the Arab conquests

There're historical atlases in local libraries. I'm not sure whether there're any copyright issues involved, when reproducing them. Librarians might be able to answer that problem with copyright issues (or a lawyer).

Medieval Europe had the highest level of checks and balance among all civilizations at the same time. Individuals had the most freedom and social mobility in fragmented but Christian medieval Europe compared with all other civilizations that were centralized and despotic. Without the autonomy of medieval Europe, freedom of the modern sense would not emerge.

What do you think would have happened if the schism never took place? How much would the landscape of Europe change then?
@LuvBorderCollies
@LuvBorderCollies 6 лет назад
I presume you're referring to the schism between Rome and Constantinople. I don't think there would be a drastic change. The only change I can see would be a bigger and better response to large invader armies. In other words a more unified front against common enemies. That's all I can think of.

As u alluded to many Muslims areas were city states ruled by strong men paying as little homage to the Caliph as they thought they could get away with. Was Shizaar one of the semi independent cities? Can U name some others and the one's that even allied with the Latins?

Here it gets complicates; the Armenian Catholic Church is for example of Eastern Rite but in full communion with the Church of Rome (sui iuris); while the Armenian Apostolic Church is not. Same differentiation can be made for the Syriac Churches etc. But it maybe beyound the scope of this presentation / video to in such depth / detail.
@timothyfreeman97
@timothyfreeman97 5 лет назад
@@nantzstein3311 not so. Not merely just on paper, but in spirit and in truth. The Maronite church is in full communion with Peter, therefore comes under the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

charlemagne wasnt the 'holy roman emperor' ..he was full augustus of the west not emperor elect of the germanic states (wich by the way was tarted 162 years later by otto in 962) this error is repeated widely only in the english speaking world...please stop it...charlemagne was the restorer of rome and the augustus of the west title were held by his decedant until 925 then it died off. in 962 otton managed to unite the german crown a part of italy into a multi state treaty and became emperor elect...more or less king of germany. he wasnt augustus of the west.

thank you good sir...its no myth at all you will see, in the restauration of the west the first emperor is charlemagne in 800 and the last roman emperor ever in teh west his is descendant Berangar of friuly 925 also the byzantine who were titular of the western augustus title since 481 were forced to acknoledge that he was a valid augustus (and trust me that was extremly bitter for them to do hahaha)
@ilmaestrovecchio6539

Yes, Yes we all know this, but the title is retrojected to Charles to recognize the his role in the reconstitution of a some sort of restored western empire.

1:00 wasn’t Damascus a major city in Islam and then you have the two cities of Paris and Aachen for the Franks and the Germanic Holy Roman Empire under the Salians at that time, respectively. So it’s basically four major cities each, with other cities that were obviously very important for both as well.
