Well done for this storey of Georges life. I had the pleasure of working on Minder for the first 52 episodes, George and Dennis were absolutely wonderful and totally professional, they knew what all the crew did and why, and were helpful where they could be. I think it did become the Arthur Daley show eventually, as when we started, the first episode shot was "Bounty Hunter" and it wasn't seen as a comedy, although of course it developed into one, probably due to Georges delivery of the fabulous Leon Griffith's scripts, plus George and Dennis's ad-libs. Crew rumour had it that Lee Montague was considered for the part of Arthur, if he had done it the show would of course been very different. Four very happy years of my career.
Oh my blooming goodness this is WONDERFUL! Thank you so much for this interesting information and insight into Minder and George and Dennis! I’m over the moon to read this! It’s always such a thrill too when you hear such good things about people in film in TV etc that you grew up loving and admiring! What a fantastic job you had/have - how brilliant - I’m sure you have some treasured memories and great stories to tell!!! Thank you so very much for your comment! It’s exceedingly appreciated ❤️
The World Was His Lobster - George Cole - An Actor's Life 2222pm 28.8.23 so this burd is george cole's daughter or some such? cool... a funny one, this. i have only just recently watched minder.... as i consciously left it until later in life to view. an enjoyable show if that's worth anything? i first saw him in the obligatory christmas carol. a decent film.....anyone know why they used to film various segments of minder in rochdale?
@@geoffboxell9301 The World Was His Lobster - George Cole - An Actor's Life 1950pm 2.9.23 i aint well versed in london locales. i thought they proffered up a great deal of themselves with their character portrayals of arfur and tel.. i mean, i got the impression denis waterman was literally keen on the Fulham as well as Chelsea (when Fuham played away)... and the ad libbing seemed very much part and parcel of the irks of filming the show as opposed to genuine pissed offedness with one another... anyhow; other folks are well versed in minder lore. not so i. as i say, 5 years ago i had seen about one or two episodes. something for later in life, i felt... same with sweeney. other peoples' passions, y'see... so mournful and co passed me by...Dempsey and Makepeace? even that was left until later in life.... if you are creating these skits with a genuine passion for film and tv land... there' s mases of people to be covered. perhaps this is an off shoot of his nibs' jools london travels...?
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre That's true. Unlike his character Arthur Daley in 'Minder', George himself was always a very moral man in real life. He was not just highly respected for his greatl acting abilities, but was also loved and adored by both his fellow actors and the public alike. Unfortunately, they don't make them like him anymore.
Beautiful tribute to the late George Cole such an amazing iconic actor from the part he played in Scrooge to the portrayal of Flash Harry in the St Trinian's movies and latterly the part of Arthur Daley alongside Dennis Waterman in Minder a programme that even to this day I still enjoy viewing he was such a iconic actor and character actor and off screen apparently by all accounts such a genuine approachable gentleman too may you Rest in peace George Cole 🕊️🕊️
As an American growing up in the 1960s, I only knew of George Cole from two black and white films, Scrooge and Morning Departure but from just those two movies I could tell he was an excellent actor. I had no idea he had such a prolific career in Britain and I'm glad he did. Cole had a genuine charisma about him that came across on screen making him instantly likable. You really do this remarkable man justice in your video.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! It's incredible how George Cole's talent could shine through even across continents and decades. His genuine charisma and undeniable skill truly made him a standout performer. I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed learning more about his remarkable career through the video. He certainly left his mark on British entertainment, and it's a privilege to celebrate his legacy. Thank you for watching the video! xxxx
Your videos really are in a league above other tribute channels. Your delivery is always fair and balanced, obviously well researched, and given with such care and compassion. The love of what you do really shines through in your videos!
This is utterly beautiful. I met, well, bumped into George in Maidenhead in I think the mid 90s. He was gracious, funny and so polite. And he had the classiest leather shoes I have ever seen. What a lovely man.
His death signals a passing of a man who despite being a superb actor in his own right, was one of the last surviving links to the world of Alec Guinness, Bernard Miles, John Mills , Kathleen Harrison et al, and in particular his mentor and lifelong freind Alaister Sim. Bot performances in 1951 A Christmas Carol and also Laughter in Paradise as well as the schoolboy spy film are classics that resonate down the decades. Brilliant and a gentleman of his time too. Lovely stuff.
There's still at least one alive from around the same time, Stanley Baxter. One film with Alastair Sim (a minor role), another with Wilfred Hyde-White and James Robertson Justice.
Just watched George Cole in “Firebug” . Ooo it was so entertaining I was glued to it so thanks for the heads up . From the ‘proper coppers’ to George being filmed on his bike and scooter in front of a picture played behind him I enjoyed every minute 👍
I’m so happy you watched it and enjoyed it!!! I know Gideon may not be everyone’s cup of tea ☕️ lol but it’s definitely mine! My other absolute guilty pleasure is 🫣 Public Eye - with Alfred Burke - I’ve watched it more times than I can count! Or I should say not ‘it’ but the entire series 🤭 xxx
Awwww George Edward Cole I absolutely love him. "Our Arfur" He brought so much happiness and joy to my life. And yes I heard Alistair Simms took George in. St Trinians has Flash Harry a Cockney Spiv hahaha wonderful. And then 'Minder' It was amazing and magical. It is so lovely that George and Dennis remained good friends throughout. I miss them immensely. Thankfully these incredible legends have left so many memories with lots of irreplaceable footage. Dennis Waterman said he and George had the time of their lives in Minder ❤😊❤😊
He was such an icon! A brilliant actor and by all accounts of everyone that knew him - one of the nicest people you could wish to meet! Thank you so much for your lovely comment ❤❤❤
Until watching this I never knew George was adopted. I was also though my parents told me at an early age. Years later I traced my birth mother but felt exactly the same as George.....as far as I was concerned my adoptive parents were my parents. I always looked forward to watching episode of Minder....it's a timeless classic which still makes me laugh.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - that’s a wonderful tribute to your parents too - George absolutely adored his as well - it’s very heartwarming ❤ thank you for watching too ❤
90 is a pretty good innings by any standard and what a life. Marvellous actor in every respect. No one can deny his greatness in the role of Arthur Daley but for me, personally, there are two roles that I much preferred him playing. I'm a big fan of the St. Trinian's films and he is Flash Harry to be sure. The other role is as the father of Madeline Smith's character in the 1970 Hammer Horror film The Vampire Lovers. I was actually aware of his history with the legendary Alastair Sim and I really must get around to reading his autobiography. So good of him to keep the most private part of his life private. So many "celebrities" could do with learning from that. There was nothing flash about George. A truly great actor and a decent bloke. He and Dennis are both missed. Thank you for another wonderful tribute video. Well researched and tastefully presented, as always.
Yes! I'm so glad he had a long and happy life I agree also that Flash Harry was brilliant and wasn't Ingrid Pitt in Vampire Lovers? She was amazing - sadly she she died young didn't she? I would so definitely recommend George's autobiography - it's worth reading! I agree regarding keeping his private life private - I think it must have been terribly painful for him - I very much respect his decision not to talk about it publicly but I did smile at your comment about 'celebrities' today it's so true!!! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video
@@BeautifulBadandBizarreIndeed she was, and in so many other great horror films. Ingrid Pitt was a fabulous actress. She had that total presence thing going on. When she was on screen you couldn't take your eyes off her. Funny thing, but just last night I watched The Wicker Man (the original and best version) featuring her remarkable presence. She was made to play the role of Carmilla - the original vampire - long before Count Dracula. 😁 I just had to check. Ingrid Pitt died in 2010 at the age of 73. Her life story is pretty remarkable too.
Thank you so much - I thought she was younger than that! She was such a beauty as well as being incredibly talented. I haven’t seen The Wicker Man! I do actually find the 60s and 70s horror films more watchable than todays offerings - although having said that - I pretty much feel that way about all film genres/entertainment! I can’t remember the last time I watched a ‘modern’ film - I think it might have been Legend 🤭
I’ve just had the absolute pleasure of watching this lovely video. A delight in so many ways. Not to mention the interesting life story of a national acting treasure, and I am certain that George would smiling his approval. Your video has rounded my Saturday night off, thank you.
Thank you so much Steven for your incredibly lovely comment! You’ve made me very happy! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video - I really enjoyed making it - I’ve always loved George ❤️ and to read your comment is just the nicest experience - thank you! ❤️
Thank you Shar for another fantastic & well researched episode. I always loved George as flash Harry. He was a true legend & you've paid a lovely tribute to him. So caring that you always lay flowers ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so very much for your lovely comments! George was such a good actor - I think a lot of people only know about Arthur but he’d done so much - Flash Harry was just exceptional! 🤭 xx
Amazing man and with minder alone made him legendary with Terry ,thanks George for the millions of laughs ,nothing or nobody came close to his special kind of comedy ❤
I have to agree with you Mick! I think George had so much character and I remember when all my friends were fainting over Dennis Waterman I was totally in love with George 🤭 he was brilliant! ❤ I hope your Sunday has been going well x
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre George was also very intelligent wasn't hard to see that in him ,and that's why he was so special and extremely quick witted ,just great memories from better times and yes thanks good day with family ,and after a while off I'm going back to work tomorrow, hope your weekends been nice and fun ❤️🌹
What a lovely Bio,you raised a tear to an eye, its a sad fact of life we all go to the big theatre in the sky, but we can look back on films,tv series that make us smile so much. I did love his take on Flash Harry and Arthur Daley.Thank you once again this is a perfect antidote to all the bad news at the moment and Ive enjoyed every minute of your bios long may it continue xxxx
Thank you so much Ian! You’ve made my day ❤ I am going to be absolutely honest - I’ve been working on this all week and I’ve cried every day! I really loved George - he seemed like the sort of person you’d want to be your friend! Just genuinely nice ❤
Rip Dennis Waterman too what a great actor and what a double act they made ,miss you guys, we're lucky to have some wonderfull footage to remember George and Dennis aka Arthur and Terry were some special actors but more importantly special people &friends rip George(Arthur) & Dennis(Terry) you are very much missed 😢😭R.I.P💤
Loved George in The Belle's of St Trinian's as Flash Harry. Beryl Reid was also in it. Maybe she could be the subject of a future video? So glad to have you back!
What an excellent show on a wonderful actor! Even though we didn't get to see "Minder" on this side of the Pond, George Cole still turned up in a number of Late Show Movies. Ever since I saw him as "Flash Harry" I followed his work. Thank you again for such a well-done tribute to an iconic actor!
Thank you so much for your kind words! George Cole truly left a remarkable legacy in the world of entertainment, and I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the tribute. "Minder" may not have made its way to your side of the Pond, but it's wonderful to hear that you still had the opportunity to appreciate his talent through his other roles, such as "Flash Harry." His versatility and charisma made him a beloved figure in the industry, and it's heartwarming to know that his work continues to resonate with audiences around the world. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and thank you so much for watching the video! xxxx
Your channel is so well-balanced it is a joy to read! I love learning about my favorite British actors in such a pleasant, professional way! Carry on! 😊
BBB, you have a wonderful skill to show the world your opinion of someone without any shallow appreciation or hero worship......I've watched and truly enjoyed many of your posts on many 'stars'......you show them in a grounded light, detailed and precise.......confident work...thanks.....
What a strange coincidence that you should feature the inimitable George Cole. Recently I’ve been enjoying old British black and white films and only last week watched Cottage To Let! I’m so glad you’re back and in cracking form with this biopic of George Cole.
Oh WOW! I love it when that happens!!! I haven’t watched Lady Godiva for a while (but to be fair I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it 😂) and making this has made me want to watch it again soon! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! ❤❤❤
I do love an old black & white movie so when I saw your post I searched for Cottage to Let and have thoroughly enjoyed watching it, I’m going to try and find another good old British black & white to finish off my Sunday, they don’t make actors like these anymore.
@@barefootcontessa3112 the old films are unbeatable for me! It’s like being transported to another time and place and you can really lose yourself in them ❤️
@Beautiful Bad and Bizarre I would never know it! Your programs are a real treat for fans of these wonderful actors who worked so hard at their craft! They developed through taking parts wherever they could find them and learned how to make all facets of their performances interesting. We are still watching their shadows (albeit electronic ones now, rather than projected) and still applauding! We love your channel and the way you honor these performers!
What a wonderful fitting tribute , we really do appreciate the hard work and thorough painstaking research that you have put into this to make it at all possible. A lovely beautiful and caring touch of the beautiful flowers makes this complete showing the personal care that has been put into all this I am sure that everyone shares my thoughts
Thank you so much you've really made my day! I work on the videos often until 1am as i have other commitments - and and they do take rather a lot of time - I get so much joy out of making them but it so lovely that it is appreciated and recognised - thank you Mike! xx
My friend walked down the aisle to the Minder theme tune. Every man's choice but not sure how he cleared that with the other half! 😂 And I can't think or George Cole without saying the name 'Terry' in a disapproving tone.
Excellent video and thank you. What a legend he was and in my eyes, still is. Flash Harry and Arthur Daley will live in many peoples memories forever and rightly so.
Excellent put together so nicely he was a great actor I loved minder they don’t make them like they used to be RIP ❤ George Cole you really were one of the best ❤️
I found "The Firebug" episode of Gideon's Way. Oh his character is quite disturbing! but I felt empathy for him too. Fantastic acting from George Cole. I'm so glad you mentioned it. I had never watched Gideon's Way before. So I'm going through the other episodes. What a great programme. Thank you Shar for such a wonderful presentation and tribute to such a great actor and person. I remember George Cole as Flash Harry in St. Trinians and A Christmas Carol (scrooge) and other movies. I actually didn't watch Minder that much when it first aired, I may have watched one or two episodes but I was a young teenager back then and probably wasn't into it. I know my parents watched it though. I have found episodes on YT and am going to watch some out of respect for George Cole. I feel I will probably appreciate it a lot more now as an adult.
Thanks Shar, that was a heart warming account of George's life and career. I remember the loveable rogue & cheeky chappie Flash Harry. But for Me it has to be Dodgy Arthur Daley. A immensely talented Actor. One of the best. ♥️
That was truly wonderful to watch & listen to...!💕 Beautifully put together & researched...!👍 I remember the St. Trinian's films📽️ & of course Minder the most as a 70's/80's kid...🙂 I hope that someone from his family will see this for the great tribute to him & all he achieved...!🙏 Great work by U...!👏 Keep em coming...!👊✔️💯
Glad you enjoyed it Kevin! Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I love George in Lady Godiva 🤭 he was fab in that and as Flash Harry - Too Many Crooks just gets me every time - I never get bored of anything George is in! Thank you for watching ❤
Lovely to see you Shar, such a great video, George Cole was a great actor. I loved the St Trinian’s films and also Minder and many more, May he rest in peace, so many actors of our life have now unfortunately gone ❤
Thank you Chris! I agree George was a great actor! I can’t think of anything he is in that I don’t like! He was superb as Flash Harry and of course Arthur Daley ❤️ It’s so sad when actors like George leave us - I think because we have watched them so often we grow rather fond of them and feel as if we know them to an extent x thank you again for your lovely comment and for watching the video ❤️❤️❤️
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Sadly, Dennis Waterman has recently passed away too from lung cancer after moving to Spain. 'Minder' regulars Glynn Edwards (Dave The Barman) and Peter Childs (Ryecott) are also long gone. Time eventually catches up with us all, I'm afraid.
It is my opinion that Alastair Sim was George Coles father . The physic , the stance , gait , facial mannerisms , the wry sidelong glance and especially the smile , amongst other aspects , make me opine thus .
I think a lot of people thought that -George addressed the subject of his relationship with Naomi and Alastair in his autobiography and said that they were just friends ❤️
Welcome back shar I think everyone will agree with George cole played Arthur brilliantly. You have made his family proud I would imagine with this video about his life and career. Until the next time take care
Thank you so much Cliff! George was so good at being Arthur that I sometimes forget that wasn’t his name!!! Even though I am a fan of all his films!!! Thank you for watching! ❤
Hi, Sar . Thankyou for another in depth and interesting documentary . You mentioned many other great actors , though I thought that , Edward G. Robinson seemed a little out of place ( though he was good in his own right ; Little Caesar ,Etc ) , Loved George as , Flash Harry , the personification of a ,Spiv , not seen again until ,Private Walker ,( James Beck ) , in Dad's Army . Your dedication to these videos is admirable . A silly ditty to end . Take care , and keep up the good work , it is appreciated . ; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ExAjQUXuVCI.html ,
My pleasure! I know what you mean about Edward G Robinson! I’d forgotten about James Beck - he was absolutely awesome in Dad’s Army - thank you so much for watching! ❤
I alway thought George looked a bit like Alastair Sim and even more as he got older,I’ve always wondered if Alastair and Naomi Sim were his birth parents.
A lot of people thought they were related! It was also generally believed that George was adopted by the couple but he said he wasn’t A but they were close and remained life king friends - with George buying the house next door to theirs!
Again an excellent video, so well researched and voiced. My goodness the Americans who upload to youtube could learn a lot from you, they speak so fast & edit so tight that I have to gasp as they sound so mechanical, Now subscribed, thank you.
Oh this is lovely! Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment - you’ve made my day! Thank you also for watching and subscribing - it’s very much appreciated! ❤️
What a lovely tribute to George Cole. I still treasure his little cameo role as The Boy in Olivier’s Henry V (1944). His big line was to sit on the battlefield in Agincourt and say “Oh for an ale house in London!” in his best cockney accent. 😂😂😂
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found the research valuable. George Cole's portrayal of Arthur was truly iconic, and he is greatly missed xxxx Thank you for watching the video! xxxx
We got very close. When I was just born, my parents used to pass me to GC who was working behind the bar at an RAF station in NW London and there I would lay sleeping just behind the bar.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Minder is definitely a classic British series that's worth checking out. You should be able to find Minder DVDs for online or in specialty stores. I think there may even be episodes on RU-vid. It's a fantastic show filled with humour, drama, and memorable characters. Happy hunting, and thanks for watching! xxxx
Always loved Arthur in Minder and thought he was born for the part. Very enjoyable presentation about a brilliant and maybe slightly underrated British great. For me one of the very best.
Will you be doing anything on the gorgeous Georgina Hale who has just sadly left us??All I remember of her is her beauty and the way she talked every sentence or nearly every sentence drawn out in her perfect crisp voice!!
A wonderful video. George Cole passing was like losing a family member. Have grown up watching George in so many fabulous movies Like Scrooge and St Trinians to name a few. Loved George in Minder - a wonderful series that I watch everyday on TV Such a classic show. I did also love George in the Leeds Building Society Liquid Gold TV Commercials. George may have sadly passed, but George remains with us forever. How George Cole was never Sir George Cole I have no idea. Look forward to your next video 👍👍😁
YES!!! That’s exactly how I felt about George - I grew up watching his earlier films and have continued to re watch them as an adult - and Minder was truly essential family viewing in my house too - so it did feel as if you knew the characters ❤ I agree about ‘Sir George Cole’ too! ❤ lovely thought x Thank you so much for your comment and for watching! Xx
I will agree George and Dennis were for me the best too - although I think Gary gave a great performance and did a good job under the circumstances of having to follow Dennis Waterman! xx
Well I’m going to be honest - I loved Dennis too but George I loved for as long as I can remember - he had a twinkle in his eye that was irresistible 🤭 Thank you so much - I’m so glad to be back! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video. Really well presented. I’ll be sharing that with my dad. Thanks. And how, how did I not clock that he played young Scrooge? I’ve seen that film every year since I was a kid and I’ve always known it was him but somehow it didn’t register, as if to say he looks familiar but not having Arthur Daley come to mind. How?? Also I heard Scrooge introduced on tv one Christmas and the narrator said ‘and now Alistair Sim revels in playing ebeneezer scrooge in Charles Dickens a Christmas Carol’.. and he totally does. I wonder if having George cole there had anything to do with it. How could it not?! Thanks again.
Ohhhh!!! Haha YES! He was brilliant as young Scrooge and the lovely Kathleen Harrison was in it too - she also worked with George in one of my favourite films that didn’t get a mention - because he made so many! ‘Where There’s A Will’ (1955) I love that film! Thank you so much for your lovely comment - and thank you for watching the video! ❤️
A BIG THANK YOU for telling us the story about GEORGE COLE, I have got to say I had a tear 😢 in my eye listening to your story, another Great actor from our era sadly gone, GEORGE is probably looking down at them flowers 💐 and saying I wonder if I can sell them 🤣 once again thank you 👍👍
Thank you so much for your lovely comment!!! ❤️ yes!!! I adored Dennis Waterman - he was such a brilliant actor and a big part of my TV viewing growing up! ❤️🌹
