Lol right , I low key feel like Mary J and Chaka Khan are both gonna do it for theirs .. everytime they’re asked about their biopics they never have a clue who could play them 😂😂😂
Zoe Saldana doing black face is insane ,exactly what Nina stood against .Shows exactly what’s wrong with Hollywood .Trying to tell us we are too black to play our own Icons damn💔 .
The Nina Simone biopic still hurts. Ninas dark skin and facial features were a large part of her identity and story too. So to have Zoe Saldana, someone completely opposite to Ninas physical appearance in every way, portray Nina is insulting
I think Estelle would have been perfect but tbh I think people would still have a problem if Zoe Saldana didn't play Nina Simone that's just how people are and everyone is entitled to their own opinions I believe most people would have just accepted it if the movie was good but it was bad
It's terrible! I didn't know much about Nina Simone, but, hearing more about her story and seeing what they did with this film, the end result was a complete assassination of the woman's (legend's) character. I sort question if that was their goal when making the film, as they didn't seem to get the most important character (who is a real person) portrayed correctly. Zoe's apology rang a bit hollow as well, like someone being sorry for getting caught, rather than being sorry the act in the first place. In a similar line of thinking, I'm still baffled than an executive thought it would be a good idea to get Julia Roberts to portray Harriet Tubman. Like what kind of bullshit is that (even if it was a way to "get people talking")?
I actually think something that was forgotten about Zendaya withdrawing from the role of Aaliyah was that the big reason why was because Zendaya wanted the blessing of the family but because she couldn’t find a way to contact them, out of respect she left the role. Zendaya REALLY did care about wanting to do Aaliyah’s legacy proud and she really about not wanting to hurt the family and Aaliyah’s legacy whereas Aaliyah’s actress was….. Someone who clearly cared more about getting that big name biopic on her IMDb page than actually properly celebrating Aaliyah’s legacy
I don't believe that story of Zendayas for a second. She was already signed on. Youre telling me she signed on and THEN wanted the family blessing? 🤣 Nope. She didn't like the backlash.
@@natsohigh5552 Benefit of a doubt: I think Zendaya signed on before making contact due to being excited about being chosen to play Aaliyah in a full fledged movie, and knowing that she never auditioned for the role herself and that the film crew chose her, contacting Aaliyah’s family before pre-production wouldn’t make sense. Why would you contact people for blessings about playing a role that you didn’t even know you were going to get before it happened. What would make sense is doing that during pre-production when you have a lot of time to rehearse a character role, in which you can contact and ask about tips for adding essence when you know that you got said role. I assume that she was optimistic that the film was in good hands before she saw what was going on with the production first hand, because I don’t see how she would do that before unless she was given a copy of the screenplay.
@@alanabrunookay and yall try to deny everything. She was probably excited about being chosen to play Aaliyah. Yall look for any reason to hate on that girl. 🙄
I see what they tried to do but they just could not find the right person to play her. Zendaya wouldn’t have been right either. I think the Selena movie set the bar sky high for biopics.
@@wuraolaalabi2772 Exactly, not to mention the little mixed red head girl that played Aaliyah as a child. Like gtfoh, Aaliyah wasn’t no mixed red head girl 🙄🙄🙄
I ain't seen the Aaliyah biopic but now I'm glad I haven't from how bad people talk about it and just from lookin' at the actor who looks nothin' like her, she deserves better, but it's better to just leave her be, a documentary or remaster of her albums would be good enough
It feels wrong to even make a film without the family or the person's permission/blessings. I will always value the TLC biopic and the amount of work and dedication they put in the film.
I low key think she would have done a great job as Aaliyah. Like the woman in the video says it was a bad choice because the girl was biracial...but it's not like Aaliyah is that much darker than Zendaya. And Denzel nailed Malcolm X despite not being the same skin tone. I don't know if Zendaya would have been that much better in terms of singing, but she is a Disney kid so acting and singing is in her alley. Her being biracial is not a good enough reason to exclude her from the role because we all have some racial mix in us, especially people who are lighter skinned--so even if their parents might be other light skinned black people or they may have a light skinned parent and dark-skinned parent, doesn't mean genetically they have that much more than someone who is a 50/50 split due to having a black parent and a white parent. So many biracial people are Aliyah's complexion, some may even be darker.
@@drethethinker6418 oh brother. Stop. Having a biracial person playing a black woman wouldn’t have made sense. Not to mention they look nothing alike. Zendaya even said herself that she doesn’t like her singing voice.
The lady from the walking dead is African and Nina Simone is African American. She should not play her, im tired of Africans taking are roles, they express how they don’t want us to take their culture.
I think the movie: The Jackson’s An American Dream, is the best biopic! Ray starting Jamie Foxx, The Five Heart beats and Temptations! I love to watch these over and over! Oh and, What’s love got to do with it!! Fishburne and Bassett acted their asses off!
The BEST black biopics (in my opinion, no order): 1. Malcolm X 2. What's Love Got To Do With It 3. TLC Movie 4. Temptations 5. Jackson 5 American Dream 6. Selma 7. Ali 8. Ray 9. Straight Outta Compton 10. 42
the sad part about the Nina biopic...is that when the reporter was asking the other black actresses what they thought about the casting, none of them could answer truthfully...and that's probably b/c "Hollywood" would have blackballed them smh
Yeah that pac movie was just trying to ride the wave and honestly sad. It could of been a good movie. And I hated how the put in the old music video clips of song videos instead of actually reenacting it with the movie camera lolol.
That Aaliyah biopic STILL PISSES ME OFF! I was so upset back then. Like in tears upset. And seeing the clips again just now, I cried again. SMH. Aaliyah was someone that I really admired growing up. Her posters were on my wall. That biopic was so incredibly disrespectful to her legacy. And I HATE that actress. She is just a terrible actor.
I do believe she put that interview together so she could say sorry before folks got to her next doing that time WE was going at ppl & cancelling them.lol
@@Randomly_Black_Christian88 yeah I saw that ! She shouldn’t even had did that especially they wanted her to wear dark makeup and fake nose like hell naw !

She wanted money , did care who she pissed of but she knew better soon as WE started going at ppl , there was no reason for her to do an interview- she had no movie , no song no NOTHING that's why i say SHE PUT THAT INTERVIEW TOGETHER even Gilbert Arenas said sorry at that time for his comments towards dark skin women & Lupita Nyong'o... I erased that out of my brain years ago. It was a nightmare. I didn't know about it until watching this. Then I remembered why I forgot about it. Horrific.
It was soooo disrespectful and inaccurate to say the least. From the depiction of his character to the damn hair/makeup to the cheap costumes! Poor Mike. Was always under scrutiny
I actually remember watching it when it first premiered. I knew then, it was str8 TA RAASSHH!! Didn't even have NONE of MJs music and just focused on the negative stuff.
I agree. I was really curious about the Aaliyah movie, so I watched it and..I was so uncomfortable by how they romanticized her being groomed by R Kelly..I am in love with Nina Simone’s music but I can’t bring myself to watch that movie after watching the biopic for Aaliyah.
Not only did Zendya capture Aaliyah and her swag at 11:17 she's a good singer Oh and Aaliyah is freaking light skinned has the people criticizing Zendya not see Aaliyah ever?
@@Chuck_EL Aaliyah is light skinned for sure but to be fair her and Zendaya look nothing alike. The casting was not good at all and I'm glad Zendaya passed on the project because not only does she not look like Aaliyah but the screenplay was horrible. The plots were horrible. Zendaya's career probably wouldn't be where it is had she taken that role. Whew!
Not Jada being mad at the Tupac movie saying they was just casual friends when she is now in the year 2023 saying he proposed to her and that was her one true love
The Temptations biopic is my absolute favorite. Even being 4 hours long, I watch it EVERY time it comes on TV. Every single actor killed their roles. That line "ain't nobody coming to see you OTIS" kills me every time 😭💀
Yes the new edition story and the Bobby Brown story were the best. But while I understand that only the songs that were very important in their careers were added, I wish they could have also put "Word to the mutha", "On our own", "Stone cold gentleman", "Rub you the right way", "Get away" "humpin around" and some songs from the Heartbreak album in the movie.
Nothing will ever be as disrespectful as Flex Alexander playing Michael Jackson. They really dusted him with baby powder and said ACTION. his hands were *GREY*
Zendaya actually had saved herself from that Aaliyah movie , just imagine if she would’ve had played her. People would’ve had dragged her like what happened to Alex never. Heard from her aging after that role .😂😂
Honestly, she had a small part in "Straight Outta Compton" as Ice Cube's wife Kim. But in that lil bit of screen time a limited lines her acting was still horrible!
The problem with biopics is they try too hard to go for star power instead of actors who can truly capture that person's character and look. Ray and Selena were the best biopics I've ever seen.
With R. Kelly’s trial and the details that have emerged about his inappropriate ‘relationship’ with Aaliyah (let’s be real, she was groomed & he is a predator), I think it’s important her story was retold accurately. I’ve heard that the Baby Girl: Better Known As Aaliyah book did her some justice especially in accurately describing their inappropriate relationship, and speaking of the fact that it was one rooted in grooming. She spoke about the fact that disregarding R. Kelly’s chapter in her life would be denying Aaliyah another title she so greatly deserved, the title “survivor”.
emerged.... even back then it was apparent. People chose to ignore it. She was groomed, and those around her allowed it. Very sad and she will never have justice because she died. But things need to change in the future.
Zoey Saldana apologizing after years of back lash, not only from the public but from Nina Simone’s family, only to apologize after the racial reckoning of 2020 is clown behavior 🤡 She knew what she was doing and knew it wouldn’t affect her bag in the long run, unfortunately she was right 😒
@@karenjeancyarskarencyars7518 Period! It just seems so fake. Imo she only said sorry because the movie flopped cuz if that was nominated for an Oscar then we wouldn't have heard anything! 😒🖐🏾
Some Actors/Actresses seem to think backlash are people stifling their creativity, bullying them for their looks-until they see how it didn’t matter how well they acted that they looked horrible. One could take the best acting performance ever and put a clown nose on the performer and suddenly the whole thing looks like a joke. That’s what happened except even the acting was weird.
As a young Aaliyah fan I was so excited to see her movie because I had been waiting on it for years since keshia chante was set to play her. But as I got older I started to see the major issues with the film. As a film major, I want to remake the film one day with her family’s approval and input. As far as Tupac I felt the film was nothing but a dramatized retelling of resurrection. Nothing special or new. I just recently watched the bobby Debarge story and I was disappointed. It was cheaply made. But on the bright side I did get so hear some good oldies.
I have a feeling maybe in another 10/15 years time we will see a new Aaliyah biopic. Maybe Rashad will even be an executive producer on it? ALSO, maybe Keisha Chante will play Aaliyah’s mother in the film? What do you think? Could you see that?
TLC’s biopic was awesome because everyone was involved. It also was Lil Mama’s redemption after the whole VMAs thing. The New Edition Story was solid.. from the casting, wardrobe, the fact that they did all the performances.. it was great for a movie that didn’t premiere in theatres
Those were my movies because it made you feel them as though you were actually watching them on screen. The aaliyah movie, all eyez and Bobby Debarge had me lost like why did you do this?
0:41 The Tina Turner movie is hands down one of my favorite movies of all time. The beautiful stunning melanated Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne did a freaking amazing job playing Ike and Tina Turner. Tina Turner had a hand in the making of the movie that's why it was so freaking successful and good.
I agree, someone who can act & sing - Lauryn would've been perfect. You don't have to resemble someone to nail the character and mannerisms of a person.
The Tupac movie wasn't great but I wouldn't put it in same class as the Aaliyah pic. That and Man In The Mirror deserve special places in hell they were so awful. The guy playing R. Kelly couldn't even be bothered to shave his head and wore an obvious bald cap. In the MJ pic, you had a movie about Michael without a single note of his music because no way were they gonna get the rights. Concert scenes used generic beats and were filmed on the same set no matter what time or place it was supposed to be with just a few dozen people in front to play a crowd. Flex's career never recovered. Btw you forgot the Lifetime movie they did on Michael in 2017. It definitely deserves a spot on this list
I don't even understand who in their right mind would do a biopic about a singer knowing they CAN'T put the music in like come on! this is ridiculous !!
I agree with everything you said it's just at the end my opinion.is that 2017 biopic something Neverland with navi was definitely better than the aaliyah and Britney and Brittany Murphy biopics from lifetime. Imo the 2017 film they did on Michael was one of their better biopic films. Also I believe it was based off his bodyguards books and from what I found they weren't liars but correct me if I'm wrong like their book was truthful from what I read. And apperently randy did drive into Michaels gate 🥴 I just didn't get why tf they chose navi outta all the Michael impersonators like so what navi knew Michael or whatever like he looked nothing like Michael and sounded nothing like him/didn't really dance/sing like him and he kinda sounded British 😭.
Aaliyah’s biopic failed mostly because of Wendy’s greed to just talk about Aaliyah and R. Kelly’s drama. Most of her life skipped around until she met Robert and after he finally left her alone. U could tell they had no real interest in telling her story, only the gossip
Ray By Jamie should be up there he play the hell out of ray Charles and Malcolm X? Cause Denzel Washington played that to the T too those 3 will not be touched
John Singleton is so right. It was disingenuous for them to pretend not to know how influential Tupac was and the impact of his death. His lyrics are studied in universities for goodness sake.
True but John wasnt gonna make it better. He had in his script Pac getting raped in prison and Afeni Shakur in a threesome or something. Pac stopped dealing with Singleton before he died anyway after he got fired from Higher Learning.
@@GOODMuzikBoi How do you know he might had written it but scrapped it when rumours started to surface about it.Sometimes NOT all things on paper show up on screen.

@@GOODMuzikBoi I don't Know I guess he must have heard stories from people about life in prison and assumed that must had been happened with Tupac. Was he really going to put it in the film I hope NOT.
The way they did the Aaliyah and Tupac movie was just a disgrace to their legacy when you do a movie about Tupac and Aaliyah that takes time you have to make sure you have everything right down to the T and they didn't do not even close to that it's like they just rushed it to get it done and I don't like that I know that if them two were alive to have seen that they would have been so disappointed smh
Wendy Williams produced it. What did you expect girl 😂 anything that’s not approved by their families will flop because it will be produced out of greed, fabricated lies and ungrateful people. It’s sad smh
"I should have let a black woman play a perfect black woman" The condescending message behind those words. Lets me know she still sees Nina Simone as just a character/label. Hollywood is wickedly destructive.
It's not even that she's not black. She's light skinned with different features and she looked repulsive because it wasn't authentic. Everyone in hollow weird has sold out. They have to do rituals and humiliate themselves. Hollow weird knew what they were doing. Zoe wanted cash and sold her 👞. The other actresses didn't want to be blackballed. Good it flopped. The aaliyah biopic was a disgrace, with no authenticity. Couldn't play the songs legally. Usee biracial actors when the real people are not
How Zoe felt comfortable wearing blackface and playing Nina has always made me question her. She could have said no, but I guess the money was worth it.
@@misanthropexoxo9618 first of all it is blackface and just because you live under a rock doesn’t mean people didn’t come for Robert and they still do.
In regard to the biopic on the Debarges, this video forgot to mention that none of the Switch members were contacted for the making of the film, which would have been crucial in telling Bobby’s story. Not long after the movie was released, some of the Switch members also took to Facebook to share their frustration and disapproval of Bobby’s portrayal in the film. They all said that although Bobby was perfect, he was not that crazy or volatile like the film tried to make him. As someone who’s read Bunny Debarges book, Tommy Debarges book, and Greg Williams, founder of switch, book, the only part of the film that I would say was accurate was the abuse that Bobby and his siblings endured from their father. That was real. Other than that, the movie was complete trash.
The Jacki Aina insert is how we all was looking at alllll the movies mentioned 😂🤣😂 I think all the producers and actors was high, desperate for $$ or both 🥴

I can’t look at clips of the Michael Jackson biopic without laughing. Omg… On another note, the casting for the Nina Simone biopic was so terrible and disheartening. I watched the first 5-10 minutes of the movie & couldn’t watch anymore. The worst part about it was that Zoe Saldana continued to defend her awful portrayal. I’ve been side eyeing her ever since.
If John Singleton ended up directing and producing the Pac biopic it would've been on the same level as Malcolm X. John would've touched on Pac's love for Black people, his leadership amongst those associated with him, the ladies, and things we still don't about when it pertains to Pac. It would've been one of the best biopics ever but they brought in Benny Boom.
I agree Singleton would had did the Tupac movie some respect and justice who cares if haters say he would had shown him getting raped in prison it was a rumour. If possibly as time goes on I would like to do a Tupac movie if people are still interested in making it.
@@Thespeedrap There's still time brotha and as complex as Pac was, there's plenty of things you can bring to the screen about that man. LMFAOOOOOOO OMG😂😂 I distinctly remember watching the Flex Alexander MJ biopic for the first time at like 7-8 years old with my auntie and grandmother and they were dying laughing whole time. So I truly thought it was like a “dark comedy” type of movie; YEARS LATER, I find out the shit was really a biopic of MJ life 😩😂😂
I hope MJ gets a good solo biopic 1 day. He might need a series like Wu Tang though because idk if they'd start from Off the Wall or go all the way back to his childhood. Either way it's gonna be long asf if they just do a movie. Him, Beyonce, Jay Z, Kanye all need series whenever they get a biopic. Or split it up like New Edition. Tupac definitely long overdue a good movie too. Unfortunately I think Marcc Rose might be done playing Tupac and he'd be perfect lol
There’s the series The Jacksons: An American Dream but it’s mainly about the Jacksons and ends at MJ thriller era and the victory tour with his brothers because this was made in the 90s but yeah hopefully he does get a good one soon

Aaliyah was not just black. Look at her mom, maternal grandma, even her dad. The fact that they used biracial ppl didn't bother me, IT JUST SUCKED!!! And Aaliyah deserved more than that, and so did Tupac. Now the Nina Simone situation, that rings true all day. Not denying that colorism is still a thing, but why aren't the BLACK directors in Hollyweird casting and directing these movies?
