She will always be a Sekiro boss to me, it feels like she would perfectly balanced in Sekiro’s system.

As for me, I think it'll be a lot more fair if the move is tied to some parameters instead of randomly picked. Like maybe after her poise is broken a certain amount of time, or everytime she lost a certain amount of health, or both. That way people will at least can expect when she's going to use it.

If the duration of the 1st part of waterfowl was shorter so a perfect dodge could get through all of it, or if the windup was longer, guaranteeing you could run far enough away to space/dodge it, I think it would be perfect

Yeah, what they could have done is to make Waterfowl have a 5-10% piercing effect and have her heal proportionally through that, so that blocking is still a valid strategy but you'd still be better served to dodge that particular move, but not completely invalidate it if you don't want to/can't outspace or dodge it.

No actually? If you're already using a shield, that should also mean you put some points into endurance, and have another weapon like a spear, halberd, or rapiers to do shielded thrust attacks from behind to negate her healing + guard counters as you mentioned can break her stance pretty easily. And if WFD healing is a problem, just block the first flurry and dodge the rest since those are way easier to i-frame dodge roll through. Let alone if you have a great shield, that you can infuse with frostbite or bleed and use shield bash or shield crash to do tons of damage while completely blocking.

That was the way i ended up beating her was to shield tank and great epee seppeku bleed spam poke (+finally gave in and used mimic tear) her to death

She heals because of the skills she learned from the Blind Swordsman, not her Rot powers. He was the one who taught her about flowing motion keeping the Rot at bay. Not sure why that translates to healing when hitting enemies, but it does.

As for me, it's the power of her great rune. She stabilized due to the swordsmanship and her brother's treatment (the needle), but is technically still taking damage overtime from the rot. The great rune effect allows the user to heal from their attacks everytime they themselves take damage. Malenia technically takes damage every single milisecond of her waking period, but the damage was 99% mitigated by the aforementioned treatments and technique that she ends up with only the lifesteal.

@@spearsage I honestly just assumed she was using the rot to do that, since it’s hard to tell if all of them are using their great rune or not.🐱

@@topcat59 It's mostly always active for most of the shardbearers, it seems. Radahn would just die long ago if not for his great rune continuously preventing the rot from eating him whole. Mohg's help keep his followers under his clutch by giving them sense of empowerment. Rykard's is probably what allows him to live on despite having been eaten by the snake. Godrick's helps with sustaining himself (he grafted who knows how many body parts to himself, which should also require extra sustenance and energy to move) despite him being an overall physically weaker than the rest of the demigods. And Malenia is as I already written previously. Only Rennala and (perhaps) Morgott not actively using their great rune all the time. Edit: well I guess Rennala did use her great rune continuously up until the Tarnished beat her. While Ranni apparently decided to hide hers on the moon.

I recently did a shield only run, Malenia gets demolished by Shield bash and the stronger one I don't remember the name of, after like 3 knockdowns in a row she will go into Waterfowl on wakeup, which you can bait and run away from. As long as you clear the first flurry, you can dodge the second and third one easily. If you don't get enough distance, tank the first flurry with the shield and dodge second and third, she will heal, but you can outdamage that later. I'd say the clone move she does on her second phase is a lot more annoying. I beat her because I got lucky she did not do that one on that particular run.

You realize this is the exact argument he was talking about right? Malenia is a hard fight and waterfowl is a hard mechanic, but people constantly down play it because they are used to it. You got used to it and now believe it to be normal or even easy, so somebody calling it hard rubs you the wrong way.

@@edrimuspage9667 No, his argument is tryhards who do things like unlock strats or AI manip strats to exploit the move. Nothing I've described is something a casual newb couldn't pull off, nor are they things that a casual newb couldn't have easily learned on the subreddit or even on their own experimentation. Remember, Malenia is at the very end of the game. By that time, it's not that outrageous to expect the player to have a level of not just competency, but mastery, of the game's systems.

@@Dovoline3 when I first saw Malenia being fought it was by a Souls vet with years of experience and they died over 50 times. Malenia is a hard fight in a hard game. The base line enemies are hard compared to easier games, and Malenia is hard in that compared to that context. That is his argument, not that it is too hard, but that when you consider her easy you have moved beyond what a newb would consider hard. The strats you mention are not easily learned by experience since they did not exist in the first month of the games debut (when the player count was highest and hardcore players were frequently seen). They are an example of community knowledge and many people experimenting over time.

And you also have to remember, those "souls veterans" are the people who fucking never even attempt to change their build and will just bash their current build against a brick wall until one of them breaks, and not even attempt to try anything outside the scope of "melee weapon with shield". Anyone who was running a mage? Easy fight. Anyone who was using almost any spirit ash? Easy fight. And statistically speaking, the people doing those things *weren't* the ones with 20000 hours in Soulslikes, because to those people, magic is bad and spirit ashes are cheating. When Brick fought Malenia, he was doing it with a weapon *she resists 50% of the damage from*. Anyone paying attention would have noticed their damage suddenly fell off a cliff, tried a different weapon, and gone from there. Malenia, like every other boss in the game, is only "hard" if you choose to make her so, because Elden Ring more than any other FromSoft game gives you an enormous amount of tools to make any boss easier. You just have to actually take note of them and use them. This is why I hate all the souls fanbois going "oh Waterfowl is too hard, you can't dodge it, and the healing is overpowered" - none of those things are true, you *morons* have just deluded yourselves into thinking your self-imposed challenge runs are the intended way to play the game, when they're clearly *not* by virtue of other mechanics, you know... actually existing.

Takes way longer to get to the stat caps as well to actually use gear and weapons. If you want to use say bloodbound fang for a playthrough, you rush to its location, defeat the boss that drops it, focus on the str and dex stats to use it and bam you got a great weapon at around only lvl 20 or so. If you distribute evenly the entire time, youre not gonna have the stats to use said bloodhounds fang until much much later. It isnt practical, but if you want a more traditional rpg xp feel/ "challenge" run, you can go for it.

Honestly, the first flurry of WFD is the true deal breaker for many--if you allowed players an extra second to outrun it, or decreased the tracking if youre right below her, it honestly fixes most of peoples issues with her. However, even the healing in hit against shields. It's the only thing I somewhat disagree, as you then basically tr at the fight as a DPS check of our damaging her healing, choose which attacks to actually block, guard countering more often, and take advantage of offensive or defensive ashes like Vow of the Indomitable or Shield Crash to deal with her comfortably.
