The Worst Casting Change Ever? '69 Chevy Pickup from Hot Wheels

The Hot Wheels 2020 M case brought us a new casting change. Is this going to be the future of casting changes or a one-off? Not only did '69 Chevy Pickup (aka Custom '69 Chevy) get the customary cost reductions of less metal in the front and rear, less metal in the bed of the truck, it also got less metal in the most unexpected place ever. Oh yeah, almost all of the details on the base are gone as well.

An 18 year-old casting gets re-tooled to save what, $0.001 per unit? Nonsense. They should have just retired it. What else can they shrink without anyone hardly noticing?

The expression "Honey, i shrunk the car" fits perfectly for this casting change. And i'm afraid more bigger castings will follow to retain the $1 basic pricing.

Still feel like I can't get over the fact there's no proper Deora 2 casting now. I just pray for a premium to get one like it used to look like. Same with 24/seven and it had an all metal release

I was going to make that joke in the thumbnail. Then I realized that some people might bit disappointed when it wasn't true (that Mattel isn't making 1:87 scale HWs) so I changed my mind.

So, sad! That was a huge bulky and muscular casting, I am feeling lucky that I have one in red with graffiti in my collection! Now I will take care of it more.

This was my first HotWheels ever :) Bought it back in 2002(?) when I was 9 years old, I was drawn to the level of detailing under the car. Still have it with me, albeit in terrible shape because its been through hell :p

See when I win the lottery I am going to get a custom car shop to design me an oversized VW Bug body and fit it over a Ford F350 or Dodge Ram frame just to phreak ppl out. Lol could you imagine pulling next to someone at lights? I'd call it Blame Mattel. Nice vidja Mark, they stopped the pretence of these being £1 cars in the UK a long time ago, they might even be £2 in places now, not sure what that is in $ but it's a lot for than $1 I can tell you.

I love this truck I was pretty disappointed in what they did to this truck and others my opinion if you're gonna spend the money creating another mold for all the parts of the body, interior windshield, and base how much money are you saving They should have just retired it I have almost every variation of the original truck but i count this as a new model

I would search RU-vid for customizers that are more skilled in that regard. Something like, "how to customize and lower your hot wheels"

I'm ok with the casting change. Always thought it was too bulky in the first place. The almost blank base is somewhat disappointing though. I think there are far worse casting changes like changing a metal body to a plastic body - I'd call that a crime! :-)

Outside of the US, genuine Hot Wheels are significantly more than a dollar. Here (Georgia,,,the country not the state) they are 7.90 lari ($2.45). Although, there are many fake Hot Wheels like cars, AliBaba ships "Alloy Cars" with graphics like Hot Wheels (on the cars and on the packaging), but of inferior quality, to fool those not too familiar with the real deal, But as Hot Wheels continue to cut costs they are looking more like the fake copies themselves.

Thanks! I got my micro-meter. The length went from 72 mm to 65 mm. Width from 26.5 mm to 23.5 mm. Only a 10% reduction but it is glaringly obvious. Like I said in the video, it looks find but collectors who enjoyed the former design are going to be in for a shock!

@@mrgrooves You're welcome. I can Also say the same for a Casting called Metrorail Nash Metropolitan. Take a look and early releases and compare it to the 2014 release. The same shrinking deal there too.

@@FFRC3rdTS Thanks I got the idea from Reddit. After it was calles the "Smiley Boi" so i renamed it the Gran Turismo Smiley Boi. And its also a meaning to how i should feel like everyday when things get down. Smiling like the Server Buddy Here as my Profile Pic. Thanks for the compliment 😊😊😊

That's a classic case of penny pinching - although it must have cost a fortune to create new tooling to make it. It might be worth measuring every re-release in case Mattel have started a programme of reducing the size of their models. Maybe this truck was the first. I saw it in the shops last week, but didn't buy one, simply because I didn't like the colour scheme. Thank you, Mark, for pointing this skullduggery out. I doubt if anyone else would have noticed.

To be honest I never really liked this casting, it always seemed too bubbly. I think a good use of this would be to retool the supra for the mainline so that the wing is part of the base. That would mean getting rid of the fnf style spoiler and replacing it with a stock looking one.
