I'd love to see as much cleaned and repaired as possible. Even a failure is interesting content. So if you have the time then a good clean and test of the motherboard would be great. I'd really like to see an attempt on the AIO and case, I know they would be time consuming. Even if you send it back with replaced parts and take your time to clean and test the worst of it I think it'd be worth it for the content. Great video. Thanks for the awesome content.

There's me, who's too afraid to even take apart his graphics card to clean it. Then there's DerBauuer, who fixes flood-damaged PC components by literally submerging them in alcohol and throwing them in the oven. Lol great video man, glad you were able to salvage some of those components!

You'd probably lose your mind if you saw what I did when I got thermal paste in an AM4 socket after it got onto the pins during a CPU removal, which also resulted in the cpu slipping out of my hand and into the socket again. I used an alcohol spray can to clean the CPU first, then did the same to the socket and pins. I sprayed it till the pin holes all looked identical. Then I hit it with a datavac 4 amp blower, which draws enough power while on to eventually turn into a warm air blower (maybe 110-120f tops), so it was perfect for blowing away and drying off EVERY drop of alcohol that got anywhere on the board. I showed my friend the process on another board just to replicate it in his presence, and he was like "I trust you implicitly not to break anything", then booted up the PC for the first time before taking it home. I've done this several times now because my thermal paste application method results in a fair bit of excess, and it works just as well on LGA boards as well, where cleaning the socket with brushes or other manual devices is a non-starter. I've also knocked SMD capacitors off of a couple of video cards recently and soldered them back together, after I carelessly knocked one off, and a friend did the other (totally different caps on different cards). Super easy fix if you already know how to solder, and ideally you have a mini heat gun built for the task, though I could probably have gotten both done with just an iron if i wasn't dysgraphic (yes, i do microsoldering with a fine motor skills disability, and you can too!) Electronics are a lot more resilient than people give them credit for. Anything without moving parts, which is off when it gets wet, is probably salvagable 9/10 times. Even an SSD i had, which magically just stopped detecting at all, worked again after enough test attempts, most likely for the same reasons the CPU didn't work at first. It most likely got water on the pins without me noticing, while dealing with a leak in one of those corsair 2080ti waterblocks that everyone complained about. My 2080ti, motherboard, and SSD all got wet, but are all still in service today :)

if the socket, pci slots and battery socket are corroded to me is very clear it will be a waste of time, anything you put there will have problems with intermittent contact, and bios chips will have electric problems if your time can be used in reassemble the pc, and live your life, the motherboard clearly deserves no time in my opinion, specially if you have a replacement part already

The silt settles down, always - The system ended up on it's side in the flood, while still underwater. That's why all the silt is on the same surfaces in the entire build. You really should use an ultrasonic cleaner, there likely will be dried silt and salts under many of the BGA and surfacemount packages.

I've done outdoors salvaged systems that were left out for up to a year and still had working parts, even to my surprise some old hard drives survived despite being rained in and left to bake in the summer heat. What kills is dirt that holds moisture for long periods of time allowing for electrolytic reactions thus corroding solder points and pin connections ect.

I can't really talk for Keanu. Can't tell if he has any sort of sentimental value on the Motherboard. But if it was my PC I would take a new and working motherboard any day over an refurbished. Reason is that it is much safer. There could be something that you can't see now that could cause damage along the way. The corroded battery part would make me somewhat worried too. Plus the lifespan of it could have been reduced too. Hard to say. My biggest fear would be that there happens to be a short down the line that destroys the motherboard or even other parts.

You could of course try and clean the old board, but you'd never know if any of the slots might have bad corrosion inside which could cause issues in the future. If you don't have a use for your board then maybe it would be best to ship that so you won't have to worry (one item less in storage). I look forward to the cleaning of the graphics card + radiator. Great work as always! I kind of missed the case cleaning at the gas station hehe.

yes, clearly some of the slots must be very corroded to even make them work and you might need to remove them to remove possible shorts under the plastic of the slot the problem with the sulfated metal in the battery socket in my opinion says that any time wasted in it could be a enormous waste of time i wouldn't store the old motherboard, or i return it to the owner or it goes to a recycle center
@EQINOX187
@EQINOX187 3 года назад
The screws on the AIO are all stainless and have not themselves rusted, the reason they look rusted is that the CPU retention plate was rusty where there water sat and this transferred to the stainless. it is the thing with stainless people think it can't rust and well it cant but it does attract rust from metals that do, this is why you must never put mild steal items in a stainless steal dishwasher as the salt in the tablets causes rapid rusting of mild steal and then the water in the rust sticks to the stainless damaging the surface with rust spots and making it look rusty

On a side note when something like this happens the quicker one gets to cleaning out the much the better the chances there will be surviving parts even if it mean just getting a garden hose and just washing out the system then allow for it to dry out in the open. Good on you once again. You're one of the good ones. Hopefully you never have to do this again, but for this one it might have been better to just have opened it asap and put it in a tub full of water until you could get round to it - for the same reason you always see a black box recovered from the sea in a tub like that. Its also why marine archaeology artefacts always come ashore and are kept under water. Most of the corrosion really only happens once the salts concentrate and the air gets to it (hence the final IPA/distilled water rinse to get rid of salts) - if you leave it underwater you can leave it almost indefinitely (like a lot of recovered marine artefacts sadly) until you can treat it.

I'm tell'n ya man, stick it in a dishwasher -- don't let it do heated wash, hot water from the tap only (keep it below 50c). Use a little bit of citric acid in the wash (food grade) and it'll make it all like new (and a little bit of dishwasher soap). Don't do heated dry in dishwasher, just use the alcohol rinse method (let it cool a little first, cold alcohol and hot components aren't friends). I have a shop dishwasher (old portable unit) and you'd be surprised how well it works for all types of things. Citric acid powder (not much, like 15ml in pre-wash and 15ml in main wash, with similar amounts of dishwasher powder). For heavy grease parts, much more is needed. Just hose the parts off real good, position slots so that the dishwasher can blast water up into them (always be thinking about where the water jets are and where water can pool (rotate parts and different intervals if needed). Depending on corrosion level, this should take off most of it. Can begin to strip some metal finishes like bluing on steel. Amount of acid and length of time it's in are big variables. Better to start with too little, than too much. You can always run subsequent cycles, but you can never un-run a cycle. Use less wash powder on subsequent runs, helps soften water.

Believe it or not, if you had used a really large ultrasonic cleaner with distilled water you could could have possibly cleaned the whole thing as one piece and then let it try. You would be surprised how contractors for insurance companies do things. They often clean electronic assemblies whole and then let them dry in a hot room.

You should send the case to _Tech YES City,_ he'll throw it in his ultrasonic cleaner with tapwater. Infact, he'll clean any component, even the PSU!

If you give him the master he won't need a wifi card anymore so that's a plus. Keeps the board from going unused in your basement

yep, clean and test the motherboard and AIO but id still give him the new motherboard anyway, and put the old motherboard in storage if you can get it fully working. seems only fair considering the flooding ordeal he's gone through.

I understand not cleaning the case for time reasons, but for future could it not be chucked into an ultrasonic parts cleaner like for bike parts?

Perfect candidate for dry ice blasting. Cleanup would of been cut in half.

What liquid do you use to clean the corrosion on the pcb components? I tried distilled water + soda = some gel formed on the pcb.

What is the first step cleaning solution? It it just a dish soap, or do you use mild acid like vinegar?

I love that in this video you finally cleaned and reused the ram. As a viewer, it is much more enjoyable if you manage to salvage absolutely everything you can. The fact that sponsors are coming in is making this weird, where you're not just fixing a PC, but also replacing some part for something that might look like product placement. To which extent do you replace parts ? How does this affect the outcome of what you are doing ? Is it making people happy ? Probably... I'm still watching. What you are doing is absolutely great. Cheers.
