If you're a driver, you may be doing these without even knowing why they cause such an issue...
Riding a bike on the road can feel scary. Here's 7 common road issues that cyclists face that drivers may not even realising they're doing.
00:43 Why you shouldn't sound your horn at cyclists
01:29 Why edging out at junctions is a nightmare for cyclists
02:18 Why not using your indicators impacts cyclists more than drivers
03:35 What you need to know when overtaking a cyclist
04:57 If you park in cycle lanes, cyclists won't use them
05:27 Why bike boxes (ASLs) are useful for cyclists

I want this video to be informative and useful, and hope that it provides drivers of cars, vans, buses, lorries and motorbikes with a new perspective on how certain habits affect people riding a bike, and why.
If you're a driver, thank you for watching. If you'd like to, please respond to the points in this video and help this to become a sharing exercise.
If you're a cyclist, let me know if there's any points I've missed.

Any actual motorists watching this? Because Jake has demonstrated commendable restraint and empathy in reaching out, when many of us react to these threats and dangers much more robustly. So I hope he does manage to reach a few 'reasonable drivers' with this well put-together message.

@@baerlauchstal Me too. Last week I was in my car and passed a group of ca 10 cyclists. Gave what I meant as an enthusiastic friendly toot as I pulled alongside (not when behind them) and then realized that might have been misinterpreted. Felt bad. I live not far down the road, so when I got home I went out on my front yard and apologized to them as they came by.

The bike box . Actually rode up to a junction the other week and a local driving instructor was stopped in the box I rode along side and asked why he stopped this reply was oh I'm not parked here just stopped at the lights 🤔 surely you can park unless you've stopped . You would of thought a driving instructor would of know better. Completely agree with your video driver's attitudes towards cyclists is terrible I cycle drive cars lorry's . everyone has the right to use the road safely

If the light changes as you approach, sometimes stopping in the bike box is the safest thing. On my bike, I just go in front of the stopped car...

One tip I have implemented while driving is to move way over into the shoulder when there is a cyclist or pedestrian on the other side of the road so vehicles on that side can easily get around the cyclist or pedestrian. Great video overall.

I often do the total opposite. I ride but I also drive a landrover discovery, not a small car!. If I drive so my offside is upto the centre line, I prevent opposing traffic trying to overtake when they would never get a 1.5m clearance, even of I was in a fiesta, driving in the gutter.
@gabriplc3473
@gabriplc3473 11 месяцев назад
a very annoying one is being overtaken in a rush (driver exceeding the speed limit just to pass you) or just for the driver to stop at a red light or turn left just a few hundred metres in front of you...

As long time cyclist I don't mind the friendly toot a way back to let me know that a car is passing. At least it shows they are thinking about your safety! Two of my pet hates in addition to your other good points are:- a) Drivers who pass you and then put their brakes on in front of you. Linked to this one is the ones who overtake and then turn left immediately in front of you. They seem totally incapable of judging the actual speed you are doing. b) Drivers who sit behind you for an absolute age even though it is more than safe to pass

Well made vid. Bravo. Minor points. Unnecessary use of horn contravenes highway code, as does not using indicators, entering ASLs and parking in mandatory cycle lines. I'd probably add shoulder checking to the list: driver should check over right shoulder before getting out of parked car, and check over either shoulder when turning left or right into a side street.

Ones that get to me are definitely the bike box at traffic lights and non-indicating. I would however counter this with cyclists are just as bad with indicating and should do this more!
@baerlauchstal
@baerlauchstal Год назад
The only issue is, I think, that as a cyclist, indicating means removing one hand from the vicinity of a brake, and sometimes you regret that. So I certainly break this rule more often when cycling than when driving.
@paulflory3532
@paulflory3532 10 месяцев назад
@@baerlauchstal Exactly. At best one can point briefly with one hand, totally different from the continuous blinking that cars do (if they are actually using their turn signals). If the motorist doesn't see that, they may think that you haven't signaled.

Currently what I hate is car drivers that want to turn left overtaking you then slowing down at the junction rather than staying behind you till you pass it. You have to slow right down or stop as they could turn left at any moment. With regard to the horn, long ago, had a long line of vehicles passing me on a narrow road, I was keeping the bicycle as steady as I could as they were leaving about 1 foot of space. One driver though decided to beep his horn to let me know he is there as if I didnt know, making me wobble from surprise, almost into his path.

Yes overtaking then immediately turning (or even pulling in to park!) is so infuriating - show a bit of patience!

I drive both. When cycling I noticed cars will always try to run you over. When I drive the cyclist will always try to squeeze in the narrow gaps. I respect both since I know how the experience cycling and driving in the road. A great tip for cyclist buy a Varia 😁

Everybody turn the lights on 🌟 Particularly in low light, but even in daylight So often I shoulder check for traffic, but just when it seems clear, a car appears right there from the gloom! With so many parked cars, it can be difficult to see whether there is a moving car approaching unless it has driving lights

Pedestrian, cyclist, driver, motorcyclist and since turning 50, born again cyclist. Just everyone, slow tf down. The highway isn't a race track, the speed limit isn't a target. And 5mph over a 60mph limit gets you to your destination, 5 miles away, just 27 seconds quicker..... Life isn't a sprint, stop driving like it is.

I've never understood why cars pass close on faster country roads. They need to cross the centre line to pass so why not commit to that rather than getting too close to the cyclist.

Great video, and well-made points. I would tend to disagree on the alerting horn though. It's meant as a safety device, which is how we should take it. Having spent a guided week in Italy, where there is an embedded cycling culture, oncoming drivers routinely tooted on approach, and were thanked with a wave, as they safely passed the peleton.

I often see bikes riding down the wrong side even basic rules just dont appy to THEM

@@JakeMay it depends on the toot rather than the area! I've had friendly and unfriendly toots everywhere from a London commute to the Highlands. Some of the unfriendly ones deserved. My advice to drivers is, if in doubt, a friendly toot lets them know you're there.
@JakeMay
@JakeMay Год назад
That's absolutely not my advice to drivers - but to each their own!
@ds6914
@ds6914 Год назад
@@JakeMay I think what's *probably* happening is you're getting unfriendly beeps because A. you're in London so you get quite a lot even when riding considerately and *possibly* B. you're not making an effort to help cars (which is within the rules and the attitude of most cyclist proponents). Then because you get a lot of unfriendly beeps you're against the beeping in general. Emphasis on *probably* and *possibly*. I genuinely can't see an argument for not giving quick, friendly beep if you're not sure a cyclist knows you're behind them and you'r e going to over take and/or want the cyclist to tuck in so you can do. Or for not wanting the not wanting that as a cyclist.
