I remember reading that the ffxv devs did not get paid for their cup noods ad. They survived off of cup noodles as a way to meet their crunch deadlines and decided to do it as a thank you. Honestly *spoiler alert When you have that massive fight with Gladio and Ignis is blind and can't cook, having that stock of cup noodles is a slight solice to make the next day easier. The ultimate egg or meat quest is iconic too.

to add on. this is near the end of them game after a alot of heavy story stuff and great voice acting that's built up. Then this mission pops up where there's so much phoning it in in the best way. Don't forget the car is an Audi and the movie also had a bunch of Beats advertising. Dre apparently exists within FFXV

Honestly it's a neat concept for a game if you have them be the source of color in the world Say the game starts with very colorful world but then some badguy steals the legendary magic skittles that feed the world its color thus turning the world into a black and white hellscape. And it's your quest to collect the skittles and return color to the world with each skittle you get returning that color.

They didn't hire an actor at first. He eventually had to leave the company because people would be weird on the phone with him after he introduced himself.

Darkened Skye has one of the most bizarre production stories I've ever heard for a tie-in game. Basically, the devs were given almost zero direction for what kind of game to make - gameplay, story, brand integration, nothing. So they just made the game they wanted and put Skittles in as the mystical artifact the player has to collect. It's my headcanon that the bizarre world of the Skittles commercials is the future timeline of this game.

I think the funniest product placement thing that exist in a game (in my opinion) has to be the IPod and Metal Gear Solid 4. Not just because Snake carries an IPod while sneaking, but because their is an anime song on it that affects Snake’s mental health. That will never not be funny to think about

Adding to the beautiful absurdity of FFXV's Cup Noodles quest, the Chocobros explicitly use Coleman brand camping gear, Lunafreya's wedding dress is designed by a real world fashion designer, the Regalia is pretty much an Audi in all but name, AND the boys are big fans of both Assassin's Creed, which gets a whole festival dlc, and a King's Knight mobile game Square wanted to make happen. All of this real world product placement slapped haphazardly in the middle of a serious game about the last survivor of the rightful royal bloodline journeying to put an end to the militaristic empire that torched everything he held dear. I love XV with a passion, but boy does the weird advertising stick out like a sore thumb.

Like, it’s obviously played up to be ridiculous, especially since they specifically picked him to be the one saying all of those lines instead of the actual semi-comic relief character Prompto I feel like Nomura allowed/made it while feeling particularly bitter about the fate of Vs. XIII

I just bought a sealed copy of Sneak King and a dozen BK cheeseburgers for my New Years party this year. We played it for about 30 minutes before we rage quit and set up a Melee tournament that devolved into people just playing DK, spamming his grab, and carrying people of the stage. I actually learned about the cup noodle quest because I watched my fiance play it himself. And I just could not believe it. 😆 In the Yakuza games, there's a bit of 7/11 product placement. But it's not as much of a sell out thing, since it's true to reality. There are a lot of 7/11's in Japan. And it's actually one of the first places you wanna go if you visit, because they're the best place to convert your currency.

The Cup Noodles bit in FFXV actually makes way more sense if you understand Japanese culture. Cup Noodles are way more important over there, they have like a huge museum dedicated to Cup Noodles. It's supposed to both be celebratory of Japanese culture and ironic, which is also very Japanese.

Gotta love those old games that have inputs tied to framerate, so any computer that can hit 60fps suddenly has everything moving at x6 speed. Like how apparently the knife in the Resident Evil 2 remake does damage for each frame of animation, leading to potentially one-shotting bosses.

It's actually the other way around! The developers were paid to make a Skittles game, but the executive producer of said dev studio - even when made drunk enough to allow such a game to exist - didn't know how to make a game about Skittles, so they decided to make the game _they_ wanted but thought another opportunity to make it wouldn't come up: an action-adventure fantasy epic with humor.

16:08 It's worth mentioning that the massive amounts of product placement are only in the Japanese versions of Peace Walker. Otherwise it's in-universe brands like Narc Cola or their own in-house Mother Base brand for stuff like their curry and so on. Vocaloid is still voicing the AI death machines you fight in the boss battles and Big Boss can still fight a Monster Hunter version of Metal Gear Rex as well as yoink dudes into an Assassin's Creed bale of hay (not making that up, you even have to do a leap of faith into the "Assassin's Straw Box" too) in any version of PW though. Honestly I could ramble on about that franchise for ages, I love me some Metal Gear. 😅 Great video Peebs, random product placement in games tends to crack me up more than bother or even get me to wanna buy stuff tbh. 😆

I'm sure somebody's already pointed this out by now, but the lady on the front cover of Pocket Bike Racer at 30:33 was Brooke Burke. She was a TV host, as well as one of the main characters in Need for Speed Underground 2, a game that also featured LOTS of selling out! Oddly enough, NFSU2 had product placement for Burger King in it!

Big Guy enjoying Nissin ramen that hardcore being the first legit Final Fantasy experience Peeb has experienced is both hilarious and perfect. I'd argue that a perfect Final Fantasy game needs both Final (futurey stuff, maybe space) and Fantasy (not necessarily even just medieval stuff but some outlandish stuff and even some goofy stuff. This sidequest was but a taste of 15's goofy journey excursions), this really nailed what it is for me. I mean, obviously there's more to these games than these but I love this take so far

My dad works in retail for an Ahold-Delhaize chain (look them up if you don’t know them, they run a handful of east coast grocery chains out of their home country of Denmark) and I learned that apparently PepsiCo, who own Mountain Dew and I believe also Gatorade, locally bottle their primary bottled water Aquafina with municipal water, including one instance in a plant off the Delaware River near Philly and Camden. Anyone who knows what it’s like in there should be and likely is afraid to drink anything from anywhere near it. There’s a reason that bottled shit tastes like nickels.

PepsiCo isn't even the only company to do that. Nestle not only bottles their water from local sources to where it's sold, they sell it under different brand names depending on what part of the country you live in. That whole dig at Ice Mountain mini bottled water in Scott the Woz makes more sense to us on the southeast coast if you know that's what Nestle calls Deer Park water in the heartland.

The Cup Noodle endorsements in final Fantasy XV aren't limited to that side quest. There are multiple billboards for Cup Noodle and every time you camp out in the wild, you're usually bonding with your team mates over a Cup Noodle. There's even a Cup Noodle DLC helmet IIRC. It was really distracting and out of place.
