The lack of a tag system is horrible. One time I was looking for bad Overwatch fanfiction with my friends so I just typed in "Hot Overwatch P0rn" and the first result was "A Child At Overwatch".

This is why I love AO3. I know exactly what I'm getting when I use the filters, but even with all the tags I can still get completely bamboozled by the fanfic equivalent of crack cocaine

horrifying forces of nature is right i have read some fucked up shit on ao3 and i've also read fics that took days to get through and gave me entirely new perspectives on life. there's a fic which inspired me to learn piano (im quite good now), fics where i learned communication and emotional skills that i wasn't taught by my parents, fics which taught me self-love and self-improvement, and also fics which made me want to pour bleach directly into my brain. fortunately, the tagging system means you can actually avoid the awful ones if you need to, unlike wattpad. i wouldn't be studying chemistry if not for ao3, but also i'd be able to keep a straight face in maths when there's an [a, b, 0] vector. so, yk, pros and cons.

But nothing stays with you like the fic that taught you what snuff meant. I didn't need that knowledge at 11, ao3 has a tagging system that is godsent comparatively.

i used to read hp fics on wattpad (there was one i really loved called brave, it was my first introduction to the concept of adhd and i ended up confused because i related to the character a suspicious amount) and so i started getting fics recommended to me. one of the most horrifying ones, even to my 12 year old mind who had Seen Some Shit that still concerns me today, was the snape/hermione fic that appeared one day. part of me had wanted to read it just to know what the fuck was up but in the end that was actually the one and only time in my 18 years of life that fear and disgust won out over morbid curiousity and i never read it.
