In this video, I present my analysis of the 11th round of the Kengan vs Purgatory tournament and why it is the worst fight in the entire series. Enjoy!

A lot of the Kengan vs. Purgatory hate is super overdone, but yeah this fight was pretty weak

I like the symbolism between them that relates to the spotlight. Okubo is a world famous fighter and everyone knows his face. Terashi works in the underground with no one knowing what he looks like or his real name.

Sandrovich is 50/50 when it comes to subverting expectations: you get cool stuff like Kuroki utterly destroying anything resembling plot armor, then you get wasted hype like this fight or the entirety of Nezu's character.

Yeah, the fandom does play a large role (especially in the match you specified).

@@mozzarellacustard7414 Honestly the Alan vs Raian fight was incredible simply for the shock value alone. Raian finally showing off some of his kure techniques, further build up for the Kure clan and Edward faction conflict, and the way Raian massacred Alan was just badass. What helps save that fight is the fact that Raian will have a fight with Edward and it's obvious that he's not by any means pushover as he's shown to be one of the major antagonists of the story for now.

I think Sandrovich knows what he is doing with them. Okubo didn't even have his own flashback, so I think that they will get a spotlight when there will be the war with the worms.

There is one major redeeming thing about this fight although im not sure if its intentional but it very much seems so: Okubo fighting in a clown outfit could be a reference to Xu Xiaodong, an mma fighter that was set on exposing fake martial artists that were scamming the masses (Terashi representing said fake martial artists). Xu was forced to wear clown makeup during his matches as humiliation despite the fact that he won all his matches. That's some pretty cool insight there never thought of the fight that way before but that definitely makes it make alot more sense from a story perspective

I personally think the fight between Rei and Nezu is a little bit worse. I think this because Terashi was able to at least dodge and defend himself a few times, (but in the end, he was ultimately defeated) but with Nezu, he got one shotted by Rei.

That fight still had a purpose (hyping rei up). This one didn't have a purpose. It served larger plot stuff rather than providing a fight.

I agree but at least terashi is a very likeable character, and just as you said, this match was more for story that for mere fighting, some Kengan Ashura fights were a lot worse in my opinion

Oh god, finally someone said it! I don't hate Okubo, I like him, but when he started with those speeches after uppercutting Terashi... Geez, I just wanted Terashi to shut him. I really like Terashi visually, my favorite from Purgatory besides Liu. And in the end, I liked both even more for their personality, even thought one's fight was a good one and the other... Was this. I hope if he ever comes back, first off he keeps his actual face he looks cool, second off he can complete his mission and continue with his life, and third off... If that ever happens would want to see him becoming the Motobe of the Kengan universe, I know this is kinda off and I can't really compare Baki and Kengan but considering he is a weapon expert... I can dream.

@@mozzarellacustard7414 true. I think the problem about alan vs raian was also how hyped the concept of two kure fighting was and many people expected raian to atleast use more techniques and go all out but it was a massacre making purgatory side seem much weaker than they actually were tbh
