This is not the type of Video i would usually make. nor is it a type i plan on continuing to make. this specific case was somewhat special to me as i stumbled across it myself years ago.
I have been wanting to make this video for a long time but never went through with it until now. The video is on Acerthorn. specifically his Dark Souls Retrospective and 3 other videos related to the subject. watch as I tear apart his arguments one by one.

Posting this to just cover some common comments i see. If you continue to post these comments then... you will be completely fine. I value your input. I just may not reply due to it being covered here 1. "My definition for Retrospective is false." This is 100% true actually and its completely on me. Most retrospectives on youtube are in depth so my brain has the 2 tethered together. Nothing about the word Retrospective promises an in depth analysis though 2. Some people are mocking the way i speak, im not offended or anything but feel like i should straight up say, yeah i suck at talking. Always struggled with pronouncing words properly, particularly any word with the letter R in the middle of it gives me a really hard time. I tend to combat this by saying problematic sentences quickly, for those making those comments i really dont mind but your kinda making yourself out to look like an ass 3. The boulder, yes its fair, i just have the observational skills of a dead cat and projected my own experience as fact, thats my bad. 4. "he is just a troll and im giving him attention", i have absolutely no doubt that his opinion of dark souls is genuine, but i do feel like he plays it up for rage bait. I don't believe i have been played in any way though. even if he did fake everything just for a reaction it was a satisfying experience for me to rip apart every argument he had. i genuinely had fun making the video even if i did get frustrated near the end, and the video has done way better then i could of ever imagined so i just cant see how i have been played in any way. 5. "Im punching down" okay so how so. there are 3 ways i could personally take this and only one of them i see as genuinely valid the first way i could be punching down is because Acerthorn has already been covered by a lot of people before me. so its like everyone ganging up on him. while i don't exactly agree that this is punching down i will accept this argument because it at least makes a little bit more sense the second way i could be punching down is because Acerthorn has less subs... except he doesn't when i made this video he had at least 9X the amount of subs i had so if anything I'm punching up. The third way is the reason i feel like most people are saying this. i could be punching down because Acerthorn seems to be autistic. to be honest I'm not entirely sure he absolutely is, i would not be surprised if he was i just never went and confirmed it as it had no relevance to my arguments. but for the sake of argument lets say he is. ...So? Autistic people can be normal you know. if your autistic that does not automatically make you act like a complete ass. quite frankly trying to excuse his repeated bad behavior with autism is insulting to autistic people as in order for his autism to be an excuse your implying that's just normal autistic behavior. if it was not normal autistic behavior then obviously you could not use autism as a excuse right? thats all for now by the way if your reading this i started scripting a video about zelda 1 :) might take a while to come out, my working speed is very inconsistent so uhh... its ready when its ready lmao

While the literal definition may not necessitate someone finishing it, I think it's pretty inarguable that most people consider a retrospective to be a holistic look at a piece of media in its entirety. Your point in that regard still holds, IMO.

The word retrospect literally means after the fact, it is 100% reasonable to assume that a video touted as retrospective would be about his experience AFTER he completed the game. As far as the other things other than your speech which is absolutely fine, I am glad to see you take accountability for your mistakes regardless of how small they are. Fun fact, this scale confusion issue is actually present in an unexpected place: The German (maybe others as well) translation of several Need for Speed games had it in the livery editor. The button to change the size of an element was labelled "Schuppe" which is "scale" as in the thing fish, dragons etc. are covered in (the correct word in German would've been "skalieren", in case anybody cares). On the topic of your motivation - there is actually a very clear conflict in the game, from the intro. We know that the flame allows for a time of light, and one usually believes light is good. Now that should be worrying when you find out the flame is fading. They say it I think twice in the intro. So another conflict being prepared for is "how will you stop the flame from fading". This is further prepared by Oscar telling you at the start, that you might be a chosen undead. Dark souls prepares you for the conflict before it starts.
@HeyitsEkim

Acer completely ignores everything in the opening cutscene, its ridiculous
@htspencer9084
@htspencer9084 11 месяцев назад
In defence of the Acer, the opening cutscene is extremely convuluted and context reliant. By design of course! Dark Souls wants you to work for the plot. That's just how it chooses to deliver it's narrative. I think it's OK to subjectively dislike that but for what it's trying to do, Dark Souls delivers it's narrative majestically.
@dontbetoxic3344
@dontbetoxic3344 11 месяцев назад
@htspencer9084 I didn't mean to imply the intro explains everything - it definitely doesn't. But it does set you up, together with what Oscar says. If you know that the light is fading from the earth, and you are a chosen undead, what do you think you're supposed to do? NOT save the earth? NOT let the light live on? 🤨

24:02 What makes the comparison even worse is the fact there was a great example of somber music during a part where you're supposed to kick ass. Its during Gwyn. And if played through the entire game, he would've known that and actually use it to support his argument. But he didn't finish the game for his retrospective so it falls flat on its face even harder.
@HeyitsEkim
@HeyitsEkim Год назад
There are tons of well made arguments against the game if he played further. hell there are some fundamental things he could of gotten away with criticizing. For example the hitboxes are sometimes extremely janky, I mean look at the clip where I got grabbed by the gaping dragon despite being far away from his hand. That is a HUGE point against darksouls as combat Is probably the series main appeal. Another thing is the user interface. Its awful. I have gotten the knights honor achievement, trying to keep track of all your weapons in that disorganized mess of a inventory screen is extremely annoying, but acer does not mention that. Probably because he has not obtained enough items for that to even be an issue
@hckingking
@hckingking Год назад
@@HeyitsEkim as someone who completed Dark Souls 360 edition, DS remastered Xbox 1 and DS remastered PS4, knights honor is annoying because of inventory problems. So I totally agree. There are things that are factually wrong with the game and he didn't really tap into it. Also that last part of him "reviewing" Elden ring is cancer. Not your video, it's great. Him specifically.
@minerman60101
@minerman60101 Год назад
@@HeyitsEkim in the inventory's defense, it does give you complete control over the order of the items... just in a very tedious way by manually selecting positions of items one at a time. Also you can get the Bottomless Box from the male Undead Merchant and dump all but a few weapons in there. Even with those small caveats, the inventory menus are the most ripe for criticism among all elements of DS1 and From Soft have shown they can do much better.
@noctisastrum7495
@noctisastrum7495 11 месяцев назад
Well, not entirely. The reason why they put somber music in the gwyn final fight is supposed to showcase how much gwyn fall from grace that he's now this shell of his former self and we as a player are just putting him down like an old dog. Hence, he is so easy to parry

@hckingking 11 месяцев назад

A retrospective can mean "looking back at" after sufficient time has passed. Say-15 years pass after quake 2 releases. But you only played it half way, because "Who cares" then you look at footage or play it a bit yourself again, not necessarily finishing it, and say "Retrospectively, this was a great game *at the time*. It might have charm for some, but not me, and for good reason, as for instance, the models of monsters only had 300 triangles in them."

It's also to show you the estus flask and how it works while also being directly next to a bonfire. It's perfectly fine. The dragon I can kind of agree with, since while it does kind of expand on the boulder thing the punishment is a bit extreme at this point in the game. Also... I can beat Dark Souls 1 in one sitting lol. I could at launch, too. I had thousands of hours in Demon's Souls by the time Dark Souls came out. I've had a serious phase a year ago and nobody should live hating and mistrusting everyone around him, that eats at you. I sympathize with him even if his behavior doesn't leave anything behind to sympathize with

I thought the game was a joke, he just gave me the blankest look i have ever seen, then he guided me where to go my EYES are open and i played the best game i have ever played on that time my rating was from Nice Joke Fromsoft / 10 To a 10/10 with just one pointer

Another thing about the boulder at the beginning is that it gives you a good reason to immediately use the estus flask when oscar gives it to you which subtly teaches you what estus is even if you didn't pay attention to the dialog and also will later show you that it refills upon resting at a bonfire.

fundamentally the problem is that he wants to play the game without dying. Dark souls is actually pretty short compared to most games. the only thing that extends its length is that you will inevitably die until you learn what to do differently. "Give me a chance to react" your chance to react is when you are running back from the bonfire.

I tried DS1 back on the PS3 back in the day and just couldn't get into it. Hated the slow, animation based attacks and whatnot. Then years later my boyfriend practically begged me to play Bloodborne (one of his favorite games), and I gave it a shot. After acclimating to the gameplay, Souls games are now one of my favorite genres and DS1 specifically was so good I played it twice back to back to get both endings, and now hang out in it regularly as one of my cozy games. It's a shame acerthorn will probably never give it another chance, but he's not alone. Plenty of people just don't get into it, and that's fine, it's not for everyone. But the story, the atmosphere, the combat... I love almost everything about DS1, more than any other Souls game, and I wish more people would give it a second chance.

just fun fact about the portal section. the world record glitchless speedrun for Portal is under 15 minutes (14 mins, 23 seconds, 430 ms specifically). that means portal is technically beatable up to 96 times in one day, and if you limit a "single sitting" of a game to maximum 8 hours (or one business day worth of work), 32 times. 😅

As someone who's been a part of the Souls community for the last 12 years, the only times I see toxicity is either when someone else is being toxic first, or as jokes towards other Souls community members. Of course, there's the minority of players in any game that are just naturally toxic, but in my experience those who are like that get shut down pretty quickly by other community members. I love Souls and its players

The boulder thing isn't unfair in the slightest, and actually makes sense now that I think about it. First the boulder hits you, then knocks the wall down, opening the path to the knight who gives you the Estus flask. Rather than outright telling you that the flask heals you, it gives you 5 uses, which I believe is designed to tempt you to try and see what it does. I think mandatory damage is justified in this case, because it's specifically a situation designed to teach you how to restore health.

I think the thing that needs to be understood about dark souls and the like is that it isn't fair, it will have moments where it rails you relentlessly, and you have to outsmart ( or cheat) and adapt to the world because it won't adapt to you. The boulder trap is pretty good since it teaches you how mean the designers are and you shouldn't run into things without first looking ahead and planning at least something out. I'm not a big fan of ds1, I think ds2 is way better, but I can't deny what I love about it and its design quirks sometimes

Hey man, wanna say I like the video. You have a decent style and actually seem pretty openminded overall. Acerthorn is however, already a well known idiot. Basically DSP of reviews, and the type that can't understand "fuck around and find out". But low hanging fruit aside, I enjoyed this video even with me disagreeing with alot of stuff said about dark souls in it. To kinda clarify what I mean, this game does have such horrible polarizing sides pretty much always arguing over it. It's no where near as good as the "masterpiece" claiming hardcore fanbase, but its far from absolutely horrible either that the decriers like to say. If you wanna know why I think I know anything about that, I have roughly 500 hrs in the first dark souls, 200 on the sequel, 300 on 3, around 500 more in demon souls, and about 150 in bloodborne. I know most of these games fairly well (2 and bloodborne being the ones I had the least interest in for multiple reasons) But specifically demon souls, ds1 and ds3 as I played them extensively, speedran them, and have tried out a significant number of builds. So I'll throw my hat into the ring on Dark Souls 1, just hoping you find it interesting. To start, I ironically wouldn't tell anyone ds1 has a good story. It's story is railroaded af, has little narrative weight or importance to most people, and is often so poorly understood you need lore channels to present it in a manner that's actually engaging. SPOILER.......... its also rather pointless. The core story is "break" the undead curse, but you can't and don't. You just refuel the cycle. You maintain the undead curse, and the actual way to break it was by doing nothing. The only other ending isn't even that, it's the "secret" become uber hollow man. This all isn't much a big deal to most players, as they typically don't even understand what happens by the end. This was a big deal to me, someone that bought demon souls after playing ds1 and realized its just the same story for the most part with nearly everything handled better narratively. You have actual motive instead of nothing better to do, what is happening is better understood and conveyed to the player so that you don't need long lore explanations to put weight being actions in a blind playthrough, and the ending is actually something of impact that has weight beyond "game was hard me feel good it over". And all the things well done and established in dark souls (good worldbuilding, atmosphere, tone, art design) are all still there in Demon Souls. On top of it being samey, its heavily lacking and takes quite a few steps backwards with genuinely poorly told story with overall less weight to the player and their actions and decisions. DS3 actually did a better job at this by far with its plot being actually present and understood, and it didn't have cheap cop out endings that impacted little to nothing. I can like games like that, like darkest dungeon that spends its whole game setting up a reveal that your efforts are meaningless, but DS1 seems like it had a alpha style cutscenes for its end cleaned up as the clearly noticable good and bad ending, even though the "good ending" is fucking up shit by maintaining the state of the world and not fixing shit and the "bad ending" technically has 0 ramifications whatsoever, and is what actually beats the undead curse. And I feel the need to point that out because it seems like you think something different happens? Then I wanna get to the more objective flaws, as people can say what they want on the story, or how it doesn't apply to them at all etc. DS1 wasn't ever finished. It was early shipped out and sold in an incomplete state. It literally was not ever polished, or designed with the full intentions of its design team. It's world was never complete. Plenty of it is rushed and it shows. Alot is underwhelming. It does break in plenty of ways. This is part of where I won't agree with Acerthorn, the foolish guy he is, but it is genuinely terrible to call any of that a masterpiece. Unfinished products are a terrible thing to call a "masterclass of game design", which is not something I'm accusing you of, but you and I have seen that thrown around by plenty of people. It's likely part of what causes DS2 to release in such a terrible and unfunctional state. That game on release was pretty much a scam with how poorly it worked, rushed shitty coded cash grab mess it was. Took quite a long time to be in a decent state too, with some scummy business. Props to the future releases not following suit. But I will go on to say the actual games design isn't "perfect" or even of high quality. I'll work my way up to define my issues. Demon Souls is my personal favorite, but it and DS as a series share many issues. I'll start with pointing out how its a weak railroaded rpg, lacking any real rpg mechanics outside of leveling and stat sticks. The most rpg like thing is builds forming sort of classes, but past that its pretty much just a rather linear action-adventure game. Sure, you can go to "higher level region" instead of "level 5 go here" place, and have more choices with thief key. Those are not really significant choices. You're heavily limited in how you can interact. Then we can look at how well it functions as an "action game". My opinion is very poorly. Sure you can say that is the intention, but that doesn't change the fact that actual combat is so utterly simple and lacking in depth. Complexity of recognize animation, hit dodge or parry at correct time and swing x number of safe hits is several decades behind. Plenty say it isn't a power fantasy, but they clearly don't know how badly itemization breaks the game. You will get a power fantasy, just upgrade your weapon high early and watch everything melt with minimal effort. Abuse poise and outtrade the 4 kings by killing them on the 3rd one because your damage exceeded dev intentions. Kill everything with a few spells bursting bosses down, cheese the bed of chaos in secs, parry Gwyn a handful of times. Just learn to avoid the bad mechanics (you wallchip and miss but enemies hit you through them), and exploit similar gank (so many ghost hitboxes that suck) etc. Then, I can say DS2 release, but at least that one had good pvp for the first and last time lol. DS3 itself didn't even correct these issues, as it does overall play better but gutted so many mechanics and features from the former game that its mechanically more shallow and easier (it's a wonderfully new player friendly one, most of my friends actually enjoyed compared to the others). Then my last point, its very easy to just run away from most enemies. Great for speedruns, bad for gameplay. Every area short of Sens fortress in 1 is disgustingly easily to just skip. The areas look nice, but are not well designed, often having garbage like the cheese you with toxic in the swamp dart guy, sens fortress traps being skipped by exploiting code, stupid trial and error time waster stepbacks and a bad camera. More often than not you can ignore most threats, and cheese most bosses bad AI, and that's if there is nothing to just exploit to break the game further. Most of it's not intended, or even remotely skill based. It's almost entirely depending on game knowledge, and its why a PR for speedrunning the first at like mid 50 mins isn't even impressive. But yeah, I'm a former fan a bit burnout of the series. I also haven't played Elden Ring, and don't want to. I won't call it bad, it looks vastly improved on the souls series. Still, I certainly know for a fact I don't want it. The collective 1000+ hrs in souls games is all I need to know that. It's also all I need to know it likely still shares some of the same issues and highs as the others, that I just couldn't care less about. None of this is new to me. And when I say haven't played it, I mean I never finished it. My buddy got it because he had fun playing ds3 with me, and he passed me the controller a bit to try it. He got bored roughly around level 50 and never finished it, because the gameplay is too basic and stat focused instead of having good gameplay (his own words). I still like the older ones, but not enough to play them much at all. Demon Souls is the only one I've played in the last 5 years. Now, I don't expect you or anyone to agree or disagree with me. I don't wanna even change anyone's opinion of the games in fact. But if you're interested in hearing some negative criticism of the game not as dumb as Acers, here you go friend. What I will say is objective quality has little to nothing to do with personal investment or enjoyment of something. Plenty of things we love are not "a masterpiece". They don't need to be to be engaging and highly enjoyable entertainment. The enjoyment of something is usually in spite of its flaws, not because of its "objective quality". I wanna add that to why its great you go in on Acer the way you did, this fella and those much like him are idiots because the overall quality is irrelevant to anyone's enjoyment. More, perfect, and flawless are nothing compared to being interesting, engaging and fun. Genuinely, the mark of a game being good is how often it makes a fan that will say "who cares, I'm having fun and gonna play more". Logic loses to joy and pleasure. Still, I hope my own gripes are much clearer for others to understand lol. We talk about these things as we have a vested interest, so I hope you find it amusing as I did the video.

The very first boulder is actually amazing, not only does it set the tone of a punishing game, where enemies can come from anywhere, but it also serves the tutorial in multiple ways : you now lack health that Oscar's Estus Flask will help you with, effectively giving an idea of how much health a basic Estus gives back ; you now know to observe your surroundings carefully before proceeding ; you now know triggering certain events can (and will) open access to hidden and/or previously unaccessible key (story-wise) areas. But hey, seeing how far he went in the game, I should've known he would have a hard time applying any lesson the tutorial teaches, my bad.
