The WORST Garry's Mod Ripoffs 

I think we can all agree that the word “Nextbot” has been misused in Roblox, nextbots are advanced ai that use Nav_mesh originating from Left 4 dead, not a png chasing you.

I think what makes Gmod so special is that it's basically 'Source engine jank, the videogame' yet Garry (and Facepunch) managed to wrangle the source engine spaghetti monster code, make a fun and functioning game, and basically have a moddb's worth of user content built right in steam (these days at least).

The Mod&Play dev was actually someone who was really salty about S&box being created, so he went out of his way to make a "worthy successor" on his own accord He's been banned off of Gmod store for a while due to stealing addons also 💀

heres some info on mod&play: I was there when the game was in development and got released and everything. So first of all, it only got released when it did because he did a vote in the discord and people voted to release it now (he then uses this later to blame for the games failure because it wasn't ready to be released). It was actually really cool, the developer had some decent modding tools for the game up on his github. He interacted with the community, he promised a lot of great features and the updates were actually adding a lot of fun content to the game. There were many servers to play on and it kinda reminded me of playing the early days of gmod. Then this is where it started to go down hill. As any game with modding goes, the workshop had some furry playermodels and things like that. Turns out the developer not only had a distaste for furries, he fucking HATED furries. He started going crazy in the discord about the furry mods being made, started saying his community was horrible, and then started banning anyone from the discord if they made a furry mod or supported furries, or even went against anything he said. Before you know it, he bans EVERYONE from the discord for absolutely no reason, takes down his modding tools and basically never touches the game again. He then started advertising his new sandbox game too before people shut him down. So basically he made a cool game that had potential, and then literally killed it himself. Another bit to the story: thats where Modiverse development started and the developer for that started advertising it in the reviews for mod&play (at the time it was called "KJmod"). Also have a whole story for modiverse but thats not really too worth getting into

I hope a proper Gmod "succesor" comes one day. The popularity of GTAORP, VRchat and ROBLOX, and even the corporate push for the metaverse, proves that there is an untapped market for an workshop-oriented online game like GMod but with a lot more power and flexibility.

This dude does more research for some horrible games than I make on major life decisions.

Ah, I remember the mod & play lad - he was laughing on steam forums about all the people that threw money at his "game", and a year or so later I managed to have an encounter with him in another discord, to this day, he's being painfully obvious that it was just a joke to rip people's cash off. I remember the game had like, 2-3 takedown notices from Epic because he distributed the UE binaries I think, and instead of releasing a mod-kit, I think he just released... the source of his game? UE project and all.

I was REALLY, REALLY hoping that JBmod didn't end up on this list and i'm really happy it didn't. Thanks for not perpetuating the myth, bro.

I think gmod hasn't been properly cloned because its more a metatext then an isolated game - it relies on all the other valve games, culturally and functionally, so unless another developer makes multiple universally loved games on an open source engine, I think the "essence" of gmod can't be copied

I think teardown is the closest thing to Garry's mod that isn't just a cheap knock off of it. Aside from the spawnmenu, the only real gmod style stuff is in the workshop, which also contains humans and ragdolls but it has a very similar feel to it.

I think at some point when you put enough effort into copying gmod, anything you thought of to change it to avoid copyright just becomes easier and more fun to make into an add-on for gmod than into an actual game, which is why it's never copied. Also, gmod's physics, weapons, props, NPCs, and everything else is actually so much to copy if you're putting in low effort that it's not worth it. Seriously, you try animating the reloading, shooting, slide-pulling, recoil, weapon switching, running, walking, looking, moving, and inspecting animations for like 10 weapons, plus designing models and NPC animations. Gmod had a lot of effort put into it.

You know why there is a ton of gmod ripoffs because while in gmod development they accidentally made the codes things and stuffs open source which people can copy and paste with 0 iq level of experience

Roblox ruins every good trend

You probably don't play Roblox enough but anything you see wrong with Roblox in Ray's Mod is typically not there. Its all about the effort the developers put in. Ray's Mod mostly reuses code from the UGC in the Toolbox. The only reason its thriving is because the developer found a way to make money off of it. By making any bonus content cost Robux.

Great video, although it seems a bit weird how you talk about a Unreal Engine game and then proceed to say the mod&play got their assets from the Unity Asset Store, while displaying the Unreal Engine Asset Store...

These could've easily been the worst of the worst things but you picked some that all look surprisingly functional to a degree, except the mobile phone one.

A pretty decent Garry's mod "clone" on Roblox is The Cool Zone. It's pretty fun to mess around with, especially in a private server with friends.

Because ROBLOX runs on LUA, it’s very easy to port over source-like games. One of the earlier popular games on ROBLOX was Stop it, slender! based on the Gmod gamemode of the same name. There is also a ROBLOX dev called ROLVE (wow, subtle) that basically just ports over souce games, the most popular ones being CS:RO (CSGO clone) and Typical Colors (TF2 clone) They’re actually REALLY well made and worth checking out.

Can we all admit the only worthwhile clone of GMod is pretty much Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

I play vmod so i can have gmod on mobile and i found some fun glitches in it like how to make murder ai that teleports to you 'and kills you' instantly and also how to make the entire game a giant bouncy castle constantly launching you into the air. Using ' ' for edits

Ray's mod is AMAZING and deserves so much respect. We all know actual garry's mod players say its simply a copy of the game but only roblox developers know how scripting such game on roblox is hard af.

before i bought gmod, i used to play ray's mod with my cousin and it was THE SAME FUN. but, since addons are not installed to your computer but rather on the server, we had to pay like a couple of pennies for sum mods XD. its actually almost the same fun as gmod!

I actually know a ripoff of gmod you can play on your phone. It’s called BloodBox, and if you turn on airplane mode to get rid of the ads, it can be pretty fun.
