Most in-depth and coherent tutorial on this program BY FAR . I could not figure out how to use layers until I stumbled on this tutorial. Thanks to you, I will be re-engaging in one of my biggest passions for the first time in over a decade.
Im still figuring out everything, and rewatching things from this video, but this was AMAZING! It was so informative that I stayed for the whole video 👍👍😭this is great! Tysmm!!
man I've been messing with roughanimator for years and NEVER realised that I could lasso move individual drawings from multiple mode 🤣 I've only ever used it to move all the frames at once to reposition.
So happy to hear that! I need to show an update on features soon, but at 4.99 it feels like a no brainer to me! The next closest software would be callipeg at 50
@@CamMations only a very little bit, and it’s been 4 years since. I prefer rough animator over most softwares, but especially for mobile. It’s very full featured. I do most of my animatics in it and even draw mostly in RA.
This is such a useful tutorial! I’ve been contemplating whether to get this app since I’m an iPad animator and procreate animations have a layer limit, so I just need to know a thing or two: Does this app has blend modes? Such as multiple and add for shading or lighting the animation? And plus, if you want to add shading on another layer, does it still work like a clipping mask to the layer below or does it go everywhere? I really hope you can answer this and thanks for the tutorial!
Hey Random Art Person! I love to hear it! There are not currently layer modes, but our fingers are crossed for sure. I had some cheats in this video, and am playing to do a video on how I use RA to paint. The “paint inside” and “fill inside” settings for brush and bucket are both incredible. It is layer destructive, but there are ways around that (duplicating layers or projects before shading). I absolutely love RA and think it’s the best bet for ipad animation. The cost is hard to beat and the features are wild!
Best overview yet. I have a question. Have you tried importing a .mov or .mp4 file? When I do it, the audio doesn’t get imported with it. Am I doing something wrong, or is that how it is?
Thank you! It looks like it is just one or the other. What’s your need, perhaps there’s a workaround (the first id come to is bringing in a separate audio file of the same video).
@@qigong1001 honestly, it’s already super jam packed. If you’re looking for something with more oomph check out Clip Studio Paint. It’s subscription based, but super solid!
@@nayt1460 it’s a good one. I used to play with anime studio pro (manga studio/Moho). It was mostly bone rigging. Now I’m getting back into it with R.A. And AnimationPro (for iPad). I like how people are combining R.A. With Procreate or with AnimationPro for iPad. You got me inspired! Thanks!
@@qigong1001 I love moho! Smart bones and switch layers have saved my life in the past! I did a test rig last year for a personal project, but got steam rolled and didn’t finish it out, and then typically use it yearly, but this year we updated our rigs to use maya for faces (the project maps 2D faces to 3D characters). It’s still one of the first things I think of when I need speed. Definitely a different style of animation, but nice!
Most in-depth rough animator walk-thru on the net. A+ ! PS - I ~do~ have a question. When I try to use select tool and drag something, 50% of the time it resizes the selection box, instead of moving the drawing. This is especially prevalent on smaller objects. Is there a solution for this?
Thank you, and totally! First one is fidgety, but that circle at the center of your selection, that’s the anchor point, you can select it and move it, and then grab that dot to move your objet. That’s small though and sometimes hard to grab, so option two is to select a really large area even if your object is small, and press as close to the center of the selection as you can! Lastly, you can use your x and y positional movements in the tool bar to type the value which you want it to move in the x or y. Hope this helps!
Thank you for this, I’ve had the app for a while and am in the process of trying to do an animated short myself. I’m debating of working between rough animator and procreate, because I prefer rough animator’s animation features, but prefer procreate for clean line work. Is there a quick way to import animation from rough animator to procreate in order to make that a clean transition, orrrrrr do you think I should just try and do my cleanup in rough animator?
First of all, I'm sorry for the very long delay in my reply here! I'm quite a bit faster on twitter on instagram. That aside, do you have an example of the linework you're hoping to pull off? It's likely always going to be faster to work in one or the other, though I'd posit that Procreate animation is little more than a gimmick at this point. One way I've found that you can get really clean lines is to use the basic brush, turn smoothing to 3-4 and the turn off pressure sensitivity. If you want thin to thick, it's not the best, but a lot of modern animation uses a steady line anyways. I'll try to keep any eye out and reply faster in the future! - Nayt
Another option would be to draw your frames in procreate and copy/paste them into RA. Though it give an extra step, it's not a terribly long process, just a little more than usual.
Hello! Love the tutorial. I’m contemplating on getting this app since procreate has animation assist now. I love procreate for it’s complexity in painting, but does this app got any bonus factor that can’t be done in procreate? I’m not a great artist, so i do rely on procreate features like making a perfect line, circle and etc~ just wondering whether this app can do it too.
Great question! I would say for 5 bucks there's nothing to contemplate IMO! There are shapes in the brushes panel you can change to normal, straight line or shapes, it's a relatively new feature. Procreate has some strengths for sure, but the animation capabilities still feel (to me) largely like a shiny gimmick. Honestly, workflow is entirely dependent on what gives you the best repeatable results and you enjoying yourself! I have procreate and rarely use it, but my bias is that I love the feel of rough animator and can work faster in it and hit results I'm pleased with super quickly! I also use clip studio for still illustration, though it's quite the price jump (at 79 a year).
Without being able to see the problem I would first ask first if the paint bucket tool is set to fill above or all? Would you mind explain what's happening when you try to fill?
@@nayt1460 well when i draw on one layer it lets me fill in the circle on said layer. But when i tried to duplicate the layer for coloring it would fill the whole screen.
@@TheRealJmad first two recommendations, make sure the blank layer is below the layer with the circle (you can drag it below by clicking the arrows by the name and opacity) Then make sure in the bucket settings that it’s set to fill this and above. Often the new layer is duplicated above, so that may be your issue! Let me know if that helps!
Oh wow, I wish I could remember! I got it on amazon, but with the Apple Pencil V2 I don't have one anymore. It was mainly to keep the pencil safe in my bag!
Hi, thanks for this tutorial! I hope you might want to help out with a problem with ‘Duplicate layer timing to blank drawings’. I can’t seem to get it to work. When I am on the layer where I made the drawings I can fill it with color. Once I switch to the ‘Duplicate layer timing’ it fills the entire page and I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. Do you know what I could have done wrong?
I'd love to see if I can help! I'm not sure that I fully understand the issue you're running into though. Could you share a video of what's happening to Cartoonographer on twitter or instagram and I'll do my best to help solve it! :)
Do you mean like onion skin? Seeing your previous and/or next drawing? It’s in the bottom left of the settings, and there should be a slider to choose how many!
@@voovoo6677 oh nice! It looks like it’s a second layer with lowered opacity. So I would add a layer over your art work and draw (with white or a very light version of the color you want) what your glow should look like, and then turn down the opacity on that layer! You could even play with adding an FX layer (just another layer) where you include dots or lines coming out in the glow to make it dynamic!
Hey Milk! What you’re describing sounds a like the audio layer is selected. Once you import the audio can you tap on a drawing in the timeline and see if it works again?
Hopefully it’s helpful! Several features have been added since this, one notable one is shapes, which can be found in your brush settings in the drop down with a squiggly line!!
