Out of the entire VGK-MTL ref'ing debacle, the high stick that bloodied Perry in OT was egregious. March took a baseball swing at the puck and sent Perry down to the ice in plain view of the refs.
Keep in mind, that back in the days, in 1993 as well, high-sticking with blood was automatic 5-minute major and game misconduct.. That's why it was a big deal with Gretzky's no-call.
Yeah...I'm generally not one for conspiracy theories, but I don't think it's absurd to believe that Gretzky was not called for that obvious high stick cuz it would mean him being ejected and LA losing that game which would have lead to a Toronto and Montreal series as the final. A delight for existing hockey fans to be sure, but the league very much wanted LA with Gretzky to win that 93 cup to solidify the sunbelt as a hockey market and continue growing the game stateside. I'm sure they were livid when Montreal ended up taking it in the end lol.
@@AbortedFeti that’s why Gretzky number will never be topped, it was a different game where the enforcers would never touch the all stars like him, it’s a different game now
@@AbortedFeti I can see the anti-MTL sentiment in the league today, as a lot of people here believe the league has it out for the Habs because of that. A MTL-TOR cup finals would have been epic, I'll have to live with the 2020-2021 1st round upset.
LOL The day I stopped rooting for the Leafs and became a fulltime Red Wings fan. I was 9 years old with a mother from Detroit and a father from Toronto. So I had family on one side sending me Leafs and Blue Jays gear, and the other side was sending me Wings and Tigers gear. I always rooted for both when they weren't playing each other but chose the Leafs when the two faced off. After that no-call and the eventual loss in game 7 I looked at my dad and said "I'm done. I'm a Wings fan" my dad looked at me with a smile and said "You'll probably live a happier life that way buddy". Little did I know just a few years later the Wings would turn into the powerhouse they were for over 2 decades. Now hoping Yzerman will lead Detroit back to greatness but I still root for the Leafs when they aren't playing Detroit. I just don't put as much heart in it. Got to get a new Felix "The Cat" Potvin sweater though. Those things are sick. Poor Leafs.
To be fair with the cross checking call, it’s cross checking when your hands are apart from each hand while holding on to the stick.. and some people don’t realize that, but if you put your hands together with the stick and shove, it’s actually not a penalty.. (I’m a hockey player and reffed a little bit)
That first one was just a part of the NHL fixing games. The only argument for "meant to blow the whistle" is if he meant to blow it before the shot was taken. The ref only lost view of the puck after it was in the net.
Hey there rob, I'm a ref. The first one for the "intent to blow the whistle", I've actually had to do this in local AA and A level hockey games. Usually for us, if we loose track of the puck, we have to blow it down, and if our linesman cant find it. And the intent to blow the whistle, You can't just blow the play down instantly, So giving the play goes on, the ref would probably blow the play down closer to a seccond earlier if we could blow the whistle down right then and there as we thought to. If our arms are going up, or we need to whistle it down, we do it. In our heads we think the play stops, and we react as quick as possible to stop the play, if after that little switch in our head for "dead play" is flipped, goals after it will be waved off.
intent to blow the whistle takes into account that our nervous system takes a little bit of time to process what we are seeing, decide how to respond, and then cause us to respond
consistency is the problem here. Even within the same game. they will let things go all game, then all of a sudden late in the 3rd decide "oh thats now a penalty" Ref's set a precedent for whats allowed and whats not, when they change it throughout a game, they are literally deciding the fate of the game.
Before i even watch this I’m sure the classic Wayne Gretzky & Doug Gilmour incident will be on this list lol & Kery Fraser as the referee. Geez that series between Toronto & L.A. in 1993 is just shy of 30yrs ago already.
Missed the goal that Detroit scored against LA hit the netting and bounced off Quick or the time a Shark played the puck off the bench that broke up a breakaway.
one of the most recent bullshit ref moments was when during round 2 of this years playoffs leafs vs bolts when a leafs player get's shoved into the net and tampa doesn't get a call and then a bolts player trips marner and no call. and then a leafs player lightly touches a guy and get's a 2 min pp.
Worst missed call is definitely the one in nashville. Stanley cup final, cup is in the building, and your not gonna count that, pretty much costed them the cup i would say
I thought that was a great exchange between Matthews and Dahlin until Matthew's got the stick up. That game was amazing Sabres can have a tough time with everyone but as long as they beat the Leafs I'm happy. I can't stand Toronto snobbery.
2019 stanley cup finals, boston vs st.louis, tyler bozak slew foot and all tripped a boston player with the puck while the refs watched! however no penalty was called and instead the blues would score and win the stanley cup. refs claim they never saw the trip, but, video review shows 2 refs clearly looking at the trip and not reacting. worst and most important missed call, this goal won the blues game 6 i believe and then they would go on to win game 7, but without this, boston would've won the cup in 6
The Matthews-Dahlin part is some weak ass Leafs bias. Matthews delivers a cross-check to the face after being pushed mostly with Dahlin's gloves. The other calls were absolutly right. To me, THE WORST call in NHL history is the cup-winning goal of the Stars VS Buffalo when Modano clearly had his skate in the blue crease during that season where it wasn't allowed. Hasek was robbed from a legendary run.
No, just no. Dude, the intent to blow the whistle is a very logical rule. What if the ref's whistle is dropped? What if the ref's whistle is caught up in clothing or equipment? His own or a players? I can agree that the rule might have been mis-used here, but damn dude. It's a valid rule. -- Signed, someone who has actually tried reffing.
As an NFL fan I can tell you refs being bad is an across the board thing in all sports I think it's because there's no real accountability for when they do make huge mistakes
AI drones with built in tasers and spot lights. First infraction you get a red spotlight and a penalty. Next infraction you get a taser and a penalty. Doubt there will be a third infraction after that. All of the above is also applicable to the refs who miss calls as well. Give it a year to sink in and everyone on the ice (Refs included) will be better.
Game 5 in the 2019 finals, missed call on Noel Acciari getting slew footed which led to the game winning goal for the Blues giving them a 3-2 lead in the series.
@@OhZech lol cry about it. That team had depth scoring, experience, a great coach, a good blue line, leadership and a hot goalie. But keep telling yourself it was a fluke.
2009? cup finals wings v pens. Pittsburgh had 7 guys on the ice for about 1:30 with the bench screaming at the refs and they refused to look around and blow the whistle, then a d man finally got off the ice and they tied the game a few seconds later and won in ot
If you ever make a part 2, you need to talk about last year's game between the Jackets and Hurricanes. Carolina scores, but the Jackets challenge because of an offside. The refs somehow miss the offside and give Columbus a two minute penalty for delay of game as the period comes to an end. BUT! The refs actually realize during the intermission that yes, there was an offside, so coming back for the next period, they cancel what was left of Carolina's power play. But Carolina keeps the goal that should have been disallowed. I've honestly never seen anything like it before or since in my life
Carolina had zero business beating Buffalo and it took them 7 games to beat a bad Oilers team that also had zero business being there. That Canes team is and always will be a joke.
@@axe2grind244 hahahah what?? That team was stacked up front. Rode a hot rookie goaltender who ended up being one of the better goalies of his era. That “joke” of a team will forever be engraved on the Stanley cup, and you can suck on it
Carolina was the better team by far. Montreal got lucky Carolinas starting goalie Martin Gerber had the flu the first 2 games and played awful. That was the only reason they were up 2-0. Carolina was “so dirty”? The player who high sticked koivu was Justin Williams. Not a guy known for being a goon or giving out cheap shots. It was obviously an accident. Get over it frenchie boy
@@axe2grind244 they wouldn't have won if it weren't for the sabres being forced to play their 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th defensemen. Playing in the conference finals with ahl'ers tells you just how good and deep that team was
Still to me the worst call was in a Penguins vs Rangers game when Sidney Crosby was called for a penalty, was in the box, the ref announced the penalty the puck was dropped and a few seconds later the ref blew the whistle and escorted Crosby out of the box saying there was no penalty on the play. Huh? I’m a former ref and I still don’t understand that decision.
Looks like from the angle; Dahlin pushed with closed fists for all 3 shoves. Hands that were close together, Not using his stick to make it a cross check. With all 3 shoves. Mathews cross checked for both. The first initial retaliation before getting knocked down, and then again to the face after. Not using his hands to make contact and make them both cross checks with his stick. Same thing with the Ovi example. While yes, a soft call (maybe embellishment), still crosschecking. Hands wide apart not using to push the player, but using the stick as the point of contact.
This is the correct take. What Dahlin was doing was clearing Matthews from the net by pushing using his stick, but that's not cross checking. Happens literally 100s of times a game. Matthews on the other hand was a two handed full bore cross check to the head. That has to be a suspension every single time. No place in the game for that.
Exactly, Dahlin was pushing Matthews, not cross-checking. Matthews, basically, went for the intent to injure Dahlin, didn't look like he held back with those cross-checks, especially the one which got Dahlin on the side of the neck. Potentially, a life/career ending injury right there, Dahlin took it like a champ.
Preds disallowed goal game 6, cup final 2017 hands down. That early whistle sent us from contenders to a first round sweep. That was our chance. I still think Pens would've won a possible game 7 in Pittsburgh, but we'll never know what could've been.
He’s trying to equate pushing a guy with your gloves and using your stick to push and clear the front of the net with full blown cross checking. There is a big difference. His example there is completely nonsensical
The clip you used of Dahlin "crosschecking" Matthews, doesn't look like one. Sure looks like he only has one hand on the stick when he actually contacts him. The first hit to Matthews could have been a crosscheck, but I haven't seen a good angle. The second one doesn't look like it to me. Matthews did clearly crosscheck Dahlin twice though.
Cross checking or not I dont want to see a dude not playing hockey and instead is focused on knocking someone over. And then Matthew's gets suspended because he retaliated to that bs? It couldve been avoided if the refs did their job.
@@austinneveau9387 Dahlin dod play hom aggressively after the hit Matthews gave him against the boards, but otherwise its clearing the front of the net. Happens constantly in every game. As soon as Mathews got up he gave Dahlin a hard cross check in the arm, befie the clip this video showed. It was pretty much normal hockey until the crosscheck to the neck.
@@korynorman7837 well you definitely don't want to leave someone untouched in front of the net. Again I think Dahlin was more aggressive because the hit from earlier (although that hit seemed legal to me), but pushing a player in the crease is not a penalty to my knowledge. The cross check Matthews gave right after certainley was, but the refs let it go. I just dont understand these takes that Matthews was somehow the victim in all this. Leafs got lucky that he wasnt ejected.
Fun fact about the first goal : stephane auger is one of the refs on this one and he's a consultant for one of the broadcast networks in quebec. Imagine consulting this guy about referee calls lol.
Hi Ron :) thanks for the video... maybe an idea for a new one? Tampa commentator said a couple of nights ago that McDonagh has never missed playoffs in his carreer (yet), I thought it could be interesting to take a look at longest playoff streaks in modern era? Are there many who have never missed playoffs in their entire carreers? Thanks :) have a good one.
Rasmus Dahlin and Auston Matthews both should’ve got 2 minute minors for roughing, but Matthews sure as hell deserves the 2 game suspension as it was a cross check right to the neck. Dahlin didn’t deserve any games because they were not brutal cross checks or anything. But Matthews’ cross check was brutal so I think Matthews deserved the suspension.
Exactly. And, I don't think an interference penalty would be called when a defending player is trying to remove an opponent from the goal crease. Dahlin is making a legal "hockey play" and Matthews is just trying to stand his ground.
@@tomhull1276 clearing the net? by crosschecking him into the crossbar from the numbers? the first one was hands the second one he separated them to hide a crosscheck, if the play wasn't called dead on the attempt to hit matthews into the crossbar then it should've been let to continue
@@IcyMantaray You clearly don't want to see the difference between a crosscheck or a push with both hands close to each other... I guess you are a Matthews-fanboi with those eyes. 🤓
This playoffs has got to be the worst officiating I’ve ever seen , nothing you can say about speed/ice level can save them either it’s like they’re not even out there sometimes
The one I remember was 2019 when Ottawa Senators got too many men penalty, then after that Colorado Avalanche was doing a change and one of the Avalanche players going over boards and then touched the puck, no call for too many men, doing the same thing that Ottawa senators did, and I still remember it, I was yelling at the TV going "What the hell" I was surprised no refs even called it
The hand pass from the Oilers was actually the next season in 06-07 (pretty sure it was in November). The next meeting the two teams had was Stefan missing the empty net which kinda seems like karma in a way
Wow, the no goal for embelishement was so stupid. I can understand thata ref won't see everything in the heat of the game. But that one feel like it is some sort of vendetta.
This video's take on "worst" is more inconsistent than the refs. Why isn't Martin Gelinas's no goal not in here? Why isn't the Timo Meier hand pass to Eric Karlsson on here? Why is Brad May's goal in here but not those? Why is Matthews trying to rip Dahlin's head off on here as a missed call?
I could be wrong, but I think the rule during the 92-93 season was if you high-sticked someone and it drew blood, you were out of the game, not just a double a minor like it is now. So Gretzky would have been completely ejected. If they called the high stick, by definition, they would have had to kick him out. I could be wrong, maybe someone can confirm?
A "worst missed calls" video that doesn't include 2017 EDM/ANA Kesler wrapping his arm and stick around Talbot's pad and pulling NOT be considered goaltender interference on **VIDEO REVIEW** ?? I mean Kesler forced open the 5-hole that Rackell scored through. Unbelievable blown call that cost the Oilers a series win right there.
I can put up with some of the on-ice miscalls as I understand the refs have a great deal to watch and, as stated in the video, hockey is an incredibly fast game up close. The first time I saw a game sitting in row 6, I nearly lost my mind as I had always watched from the nose bleeds previously. It was a completely different game. What I can't stand is the Toronto reviewing group who have multiple angles of clear video and consistently f*ck up every single call when asked to review. They either don't know what they are doing or, somehow, have an agenda to pick winners and losers. THEY ARE TERRIBLE and, if that's the best they can do, the NHL needs to get rid of video replay and just suffer with the bad calls by the refs within the game.
How about the 1999 Stanley Cup that was "won" by Dallas despite Brett Hull CLEARLY having his foot in the crease and as such, that goal shouldn't ever have counted!
You forgot the goal call from the 1999 Sabres Stars Stanley Cup final. The NHL has literally said that THE goal that resulted in the Stars winning the whole thing was ILLEGAL but since they had already awarded the cup and the Sabres were off the ice they just let it go.
I still can't believe the refs didn't call Gretzky for the high stick on Gilmour. The league didn't even step in and give Gretzky a 1 game suspension or even a fine for the high stick.
I personally believe we should boycott the NHL for missed calls like that sometimes and force the refs to penalize generational talents when need be and catch them on their Bull crap.
I don't know if you have any interest in football (soccer) but if you do and understand the rules enough or are willing to learn them, take a look at the missed calls in the English Premier League this season. I hardly watch hockey anymore but I come back to see videos like this to make me feel better about the refs in the EPL. Maybe watching the useless EPL refs can make you feel better about the zebras in the NHL.
As a Liverpool fan I always have had a bone to pick with PGMOL and their handling of our matches, especially when it’s Paul Tierney involved in any capacity it really makes you think that there is an agenda against the Reds with the decisions he has made when officiating Liverpool matches.
That Matthews call was correct it was a net front battle with pushing maybe one cross check to the hip from dahlin the cross check to the neck was completely uncalled for
2019 game 5 missed trip on Noel acciari completed changed the momentum of that cup run. That game goes into overtime if that doesn’t happen and Boston could’ve even won this series in 6 games with this call being made.
It was a poor call indeed, but I don't think it changed the momentum of the series too much. Whoever lost game 5 was probably going to win game 6 imo. It was also a potential embellishment.
Almost wish they could vacate a win if the call was so blatant and so key to the results. Sad that these zebra men can change the whole course of a series.
that dahlin on Matthews thing was a good non call. Stuff like this happens every single game its hockey not soccer. Matthews retaliated and went too far by crosschecking dahlin directly in the face. its safe to say rob is a leafs fan
@@Jabberwok28 dahlin went in looking to injure matthews was responding ducking because you're a pansy and getting yourself hurt is completely relevant to this scenario, it's the same as turning your back when you're about to get hit and then crying about it being on the numbers. You wanna play bang bang with the big boys don't be a coward
The take on the Dahlin cross check is poor. Dahlin got a cross check to his head, Matthews was cross checked on his body, the two are not the same. One can cause serious injury (the matthews cross check) and the other is commonly used to remove a player from in front of the net (the Dahlin cross check). Just because you’re obviously a Leafs fan does not mean all calls against the Leafs are egregious.
1 he isn't a leafs fan 2 super soft cross-checks were called in the season 3 tell that oh it's only to the body to the plethora of players who had upper body career ending injuries due to those cross-checks.
THIS, this is exactly the reason why I have zero belief in the sanctity of the NHL anymore. Why I absolutely believe that the NHL has been systemically keeping Canadian teams from winning the cup. This video right here, is exhibit A in the argument that they don't want Canadian teams to win the cup.
It isn’t coincidence that a Canadian team hasn’t won a Cup since the 1993 Canadiens and who was the commissioner then? Right it was Bettman and he has really shown an anti-Canadian bias in his tenure. You don’t have to look any further than the infamous Game 6 between Tampa and Calgary where Gélinas had a perfectly good goal disallowed that would have won Calgary their second Cup, the puck had clearly crossed the line as well but nope the zebras 🦓 hadn’t gotten their complimentary glasses 👓 from SpecSavers.
The first one is actually even worse, the reason why the ref "intended to blow the whistle" was because he lost sight of the puck, because it was in the net. Scoring the goal was the condition that made it possible for the goal to be discounted. That whole rule is insane and it's a wonder it rarely comes up. That rule literally says that the only game that actually matters is the one the refs see. Think about how absurd that is, everybody in the building could see it happen, but if 2 people in stripped jerseys don't, then it might as well have never happened at all.
These missed calls all seem to be against good players and always in or near the playoffs. The answer is Gary Bettman is corrupt and is probably bribing the refs.
They’ve also been screwed just as much from bad calls or lack there of, looking at Aston-Reese’s hit from Wilson when the Caps won the cup which only led to him going out for 3 games while ZAR was out all of playoffs with a broken jaw and concussion, and Sid getting chicken winged by Trouba going on concussion protocol where they’re now in the Eastern Conference Final.
Matthews 100% deserved the suspension, and the jostling beforehand was literally nothing. They were battling for positioning, which is part of the game. Dahlin knocked him down with a SHOVE, not a crosscheck, and matthews got pissed and crosschecked him in the goddam throat. There’s a very clear line between the two
Are from around Winnipeg? You have the same accent as two people I know from Winnipeg. It's the way you pronounce you're t's like in "net", "yet", "spot" and "not" to list a few. I noticed it immediately.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. "Let them play" is one thing, but when dirty plays are being made refs need to call them, because when they don't that's when players take matters into their own hands and players get injured. Honestly when injuries happen in games the refs on duty should get inquiries against them just as much as the players who committed the infraction.
Yepp. Also. Fraser said years later. Gretzky would be I. His ear the whole series. Except for one moment. The moment Gretz clipped Gilmour. The man wasn’t near the refs. Wasn’t getting into their ear. He was hiding back at the bench because he knew he would be thrown out if the game. And that folks is when the Great One and his Kings turned the tables around o. The Leafs. I still sa the Leafa would have w given the Habs a better rub for the cup. But In The end. Habs we’re just to good to beat. Years later. Fraser talks about that incident. He sees what he was supposed to see. But we all knew. Fraser either had a grudge agaibst the Canadian teams or just a leaf hater. Leafs should have e wi. That series against the Kings. But. Hockey politics are much stronger for some. I’m still pissed. lol. The closes Ive seen that team get to the finals. And now I’m half a century old. Been a Leaf fan for close to my age. Nope. Won’t happen. The first thing they’d have to figure out is how the heck to get out if the 1at round. Then do the same for the 2nd round. One can only wish. He. Can anyone tell me more about Tanev? I’ve notixe a lot of western Canadians on here. What’s his weakness? And does anyone think he will be five on the first pairing with Morgan Rielly. Just never reall watched him play. Thanks to anyone who can tell me more about Tanev :) Ps. I’m just more curious about Tanev and just wanted to get a little scoop on him from others who have seen him play
Uummmm, do you know what "cross checking" is??!! What dalin did, according to you repeatedly, was NOT cross checking! Mathews responses were. Hence suspension.
The hand pass goal against the Flyers that the refs told the coach he wasn't allowed to challenge... then the NHL announced during the game that it was the refs mistake, yet they never fixed it. It's the worst thing I've ever seen a ref do to a team. Hands down.
As a referee the dispute rule makes sense. From when you see that a puck is dead to when you actually blow the whistle they is a slight delay. For example, goalie covers puck, referee may have to raise the whistle to mouth to blow it dead, however the play was dead before the ref blew the whistle.
That sounds great, and yet players were still playing. A. And B. the puck was clearly not dead in that situation so the intent to blow shouldn't really matter because the puck just happened to squeak through but the ref "intended" to call it dead?
I’m also a referee. I find it comical hearing the complaints about “intent to blow the whistle” and when the “whistle was actually blown” or “the puck clearly wasn’t covered” while watching it from the overhead or goal camera angle….did y’all ever consider that the official is not in the middle of the play or watching from inside the net? The home team players/coaches/crowd/parents don’t seem to get upset when there a penalty called against the visiting/opposing team. I’m not sure why though…🤔🤔🤔
@@brianjohnson7484 Dude refs get one look at a play at full speed and from most times at a non optimized angle. Fans and review get all angles in slow motion multiple times. Fans can be brutal sometimes lol. In addition, call a penalty on the ice is harder than calling a penalty in the stands because of perspective, and at ice level you actually see less because of moving bodies in front of you.
I'm not a Red Wings fan, but the Brad May goal should've counted 110%. The whistle was after the puck was in the net. Today that play would be a goal after discussion with the situation room in Toronto. Many of these plays have resulted in rule changes, but it's sad that it takes a play like that to make a change.
I feel like everything was obvious until the end. You just wanted to wine about the mathews suspension…….. Those “repeated crosschecks” from dahlin are literally pushes, hes shoving him out of the crease as any defenseman would do. Most defenseman actually use their stick more, this instance was pretty light so enough of the nonsense . Mathews turned around and cross checked him in the neck bro. he should have been suspended longer in my opinion. HE TARGETED HIS NECK. Yall need to get over yourselves, toronto has no spine and thats why you cant pass the first round. Stop crying and play. The fact that you babies kicked babcock out of Toronto because “he was mean to you” Like bro, he was literally climbing up your ass about making sure you play right. With all the inconsistencies it kinda seems like that was needed. Its the nhl, not day care. Mathews retaliated like a baby and deserved every bit and more of that suspension. He got pushed, SUCK IT UP AND PLAY
