Do you really think Sam pays that much for a model then scraps it? Mind you if he keeps the creature in his cupboard he may be branching into Hammer territory.
Thank you for continuing to champion the consumer rights of railway modellers, we need you more than ever these days as some manufacturers seem intent on squeezing as much money out of us as they can. And as for criticism from the likes of RM Web, the nasty individuals who inhabit that dark place (and especially those who run it) do not speak for the majority of us modellers. I gave up on them long ago. Well done keep up the good work, and happy modelling for 2023.
I couldn't agree with you more Howard. RM is a despicable forum. One member on their insulted me using despicable language and rather than reply I took it up with the moderator, which is what you are supposed to on most forums. However the moderator thought that what the guy had said to me was "acceptable". So I sent the Mod a reply back saying that on any other forum that word would have lead to a ban. I didn't realise at the time that the Mod was the main person in charge of RM. I got another message from the forum, but when I tried to log in I was locked out, so I worked out that I had been banned and couldn't read why🤐 I had posted a great deal of information on the site including pictures. But when they ban you it deletes all the threads and comments you make. An odd thing to do as deleting a member who's contributed a great deal of good stuff would be lost. The only posts of mine that survive is the ones were other uses have quoted me, on threads not started by me.
@@graham76man Unfortunately I found RM Web to be increasingly dominated by a number of intolerant, obsessive, self-appointed 'experts' who were only too ready to launch really nasty vitriolic attacks upon anyone who they disagreed with and really suck the joy out of our hobby. Which is where the role of the moderator comes in, unfortunately in my experience, rather than curb the worst excesses of this 'hard core' he is more concerned with defending the reputation of the big model railway manufacturers. I found that any criticism of them, particularly as regards high prices and value for money, are immediately jumped upon and not tolerated. Which is why I really value Sam's Trains for speaking out on such issues.
Hi Sam, just a thought: would very much enjoy seeing a video where you choose a good static model train and transform it into a working locomotive model train complete with motor etc.
“i’ve had bowel movements that constituted better value for money than this locomotive” - SamsTrains at this point im convinced Sam just craps pure gold
And let’s give a dishonorable shoutout to the worst wagons/coaches of 2022… The Rapido Gunpowder Vans… The Bachmann Vanwide… The Bachmann Autocoach… The L&MR Flatbeds from Hornby… And the cherry on top, Hornby’s Coca-Cola Bottle Lomac, which doesn’t even look to be cherry flavored lol. Seriously Sam, you reviewed quite a bit of rolling stock this year! Keep up the good work!
We all give Hornby a rather hard time these days, and while that may be deserved (and Hornby really need to get there act together before they self destruct), it is interesting that they did not appear on the bottom 5 video at all, so as much as they need to improve not a terrible effort from Hornby this year.
Sam, I just wanted to say, thank you, for giving me something to look forward to at the end of this year. At a time when I’m normally at my lowest and dreading the holidays. Something like this, just gives me something to look forward to. Sorry for Rambling but keep up the fantastic work and here’s to 2023. I hope it’s the best for you.
Ahh no problem my friend - so glad these are able to give you a bit of a lift! Thoughts very much with you, hope you're doing okay! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The problem with manufactures are they just keep bringing out the same old models just updated instead of bringing out model that no one has ever brought out before.Pregrouping loco would be nice as there are so many plus they often came under the Big four later on. Keep up the good work and have a good Christmas and a very successful and fun new year
Yeah we are seeing a lot of retools where the models they replace were actually perfectly good... I would love to see more prototypes covered too! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The funny thing is, that Bachmann 4-6-0 used to be used in their old “Black Box” Spectrum line and they were amazing from what I heard. Yes they used the old tooling and cheaper motors. Long story short if you’re looking for a good Bachmann engine look to the early 2000’s Black Box Spectrums.
@@James-Railyard Good to know thanks but i wish they would create pregrouping loco Like LNWR ORHR S&DJR LBSC MR and many other smaller railway companies
You should 3d print a base keeper plate for the Gandy Dancer to prove just how easy it would be to make correctly and how incompetent the manufacturer is!
The Gandy Dancer seems to be a victim of mold wear - see how the bars around the motor housing are less sharp on the newer one than on the older one? I suspect both the tab on the chassis and the socket on the keeper plate have worn down a fair bit.
Great roundup of the bad 'uns - hope the Scrapman enjoyed his dinner! I bought a second-hand Bachmann 2MT tank back in the 90s and it looks like a far better example than your new re-released one. I also more recently picked up an old Bachmann 97xx pannier for £50 at a show - it's a lovely model and a great runner (and has sprung buffers). If Bachmann are going to simply rehash old models less well for huge prices then second-hand seems to be the way to go
Cheers Sam, thank you for the fun, entertainment and honest reviews in the last year. Our hobby is great but is becoming very expensive. Therefore we should be given value for money and get what we pay for. You call out the shoddy and overpriced, with humour and integrity. See you in 2023. Bless you 🙏
Personally, I believe Bachmann must be secretly running some sort of illegal dice game or coin-flipping tournament in their factories, because their models are either great quality for the price or absolutely horrid, and the dice seem weighted towards the latter option. Which kinda sucks because if they could lower their costs and perhaps get their product quality to remain consistently positive, they would be an ideal company for newcomers just starting on the model railroading hobby.
I think all of the big makers would be better off if they slashed their prices in half or in some cases even to one third. Sales would shoot way up because people would actually be able to afford their products.
I guess it's too late for this years christmas, but you should try to get your hands on a Lionel H0 scale Polar Express and do a unboxing/review for that. I recently received the train set from the United States and happened to find the 2 additional coaches on a UK webshop and I absolutely love it. The detailing isn't great, but the overal look and sounds bring back so many memories of the 2004 movie. I think it's a must have for people who are into the hobby and love The Polar Express.
Nice one! I was looking at the bachmann polar express to go with my bachmann jingle bell express. Where did you find the extra coaches, I must look into the Lionel one,. Cheers
Number 5: Humiliated Number 4: Reprimanded Number 3: Rammed through Polystyrene Number 2: Appeared in a Cringy Advert Number 1: Fed to the Scrapman (Scrapped) Yup, I say that’s appropriate for this year’s travesties of loco’s…
LMAO, you almost had us keeled over from laughter 😂 Our list would firstly and above all include the faulty ones at arrival we were thinking, e.g. the faulty Hornby B12s, the Hush Hush disaster, King Class, Heljan Class 15 to name a few. You have set your criteria of course but should a loco first of all not be able to function at least? 🤔But that's us and how we expect thingies. Jolly good fun this one HAHAH 😂
haha glad to hear that Linda - yes the B12 and the King is a good call - thing with those is that they only fell down on the mechanism/performance categories, so their overall scores weren't too bad! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Hello Sam i love your video and i wanted to thanks you alot you helped me alot when i started model train especially the video of the j15 now i love it your the best model train youtuber :D
I laughed so hard at this video, it was genuinely hilarious. I can’t wait for the top 5 best, and maybe as a little bit extra, you can give the top five best locos some rewards.
Incredible video Sam, you really made me laugh with those punishments! Evil Sam is out in force today. Merry Christmas to you and Chloe and keep the crazy videos coming!
Oh my, but Bachmann certainly was well represented in this list, eh? And the punishments were hilarious, Sam. Thanks for making me giggle. Happy Christmas and cheers from Wisconsin!
Yeah they sure were - they're one of the worst for model recycling without sufficient updates! Glad to hear you got a laugh out of it! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I just watched the 2MT video the other day. I was not expecting it to be sentenced to death by Scrapman... Seems like it was a rough year for British Bachmann. Also, Sam, you should get your hands on a more modern American engine one of these days, like an SD70ACe or an ES44AC. I'd like to see what you think of our heavy duty 6-axle units. Have a Merry Christmas!
I was rather tempted by the thought of getting a 64XX to authenticate the use of a pannier locomotive with my autocoach. I already have a cheap 14XX and might couple the coach with that or my 56XX prairie instead. Thank you for saving me £100 or more that I might've wasted. If it's no better than an old pannier tank, I'll just buy one of those to run around as a general tank.
Hi Sam, I managed to get one of the Bachmann 8750 panniers back in 2020 for about £90 from Rails of Sheffield (I believe the RRP was around £120). The detail seems to be at the same level as the 64xx you've got, the mechanism is identical but the performance is quite a bit better on mine. It's probably one of my favourite locos in my collection. Great video, nice to see the scrapman again!
What a shame, I was really looking forward to that E2... Good thing i didnt make the purchase! EDIT: that animatronic (?) that ate the 2MT was horrifying... Have you ever considered doing a short horror film???
I got a Bachmann 64xx for Christmas last year, I really loved it although all I noticed with it is that it struggles to go over points. Never had a look mechanically m.
It is true, they are not as bad as last year, but it is also true that overall the prices of models, good and bad, have dramatically increased. It's almost like the manufacturers want to price people out of this hobby and make it exclusive for people with a lot of spare money.
They've gone up far and away beyond inflation or RPI Brendan. It's obscene greed and definitely pricing all but the wealthy out of the hobby. When manufacturers cease to charge what the models are worth, but instead charge what they think they can get away with, they're on a slippery slope. In that respect Hornby are the biggest culprits. If these models were built in the UK and supporting UK businesses I would pay a premium, but not one British hand has gone into manufacturing these models. It's very sad where we've got to now.
The Bachmann 4-6-0 was first made in 1998, and the detail was outstanding and It even had a 5 pole motor, but bachmann re-release it in 2014 and well as you can see. Cheers Jasper & Willow
Yes, that was when it was still part of the spectrum line. I have two of them and they have a lot more detail than the current offering. I also think his should have come with a front pilot truck spring and that would have helped immensely with how it ran. 👍🏼
It’s quite the opposite. The 2014 version is a dumbed down version of the older version. I wish you picked up an older version and I think you might change your mind. I have an older version that I upgraded with DCC sound and it does the job.
I don't think that that Bachman loco deserved to be scrapped. It was still a working model. I sure hope it was just for show and that no loco were harmed during the filming of this episode.
15:15 "Prized Turd" made me bust out laughing and made my head fell off my shoulders🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Well done Sam! That was am amazing video, keep up the good work old chap!!!
Sam I have a video Idea so you put all the lemons/bad models and put them to the test so like have a race pulling power etc and then feed the worst ones to the scrap man
excellent list sam, i agree with your picks. i think alot of models are rushed most of the time, and well then they end up as model history. cheers sam merry christmas :D
Duck, Bear, and Arthur from the ttte universe after watching this video: Duck: what the manufacturers have done was rubbish, the things they do over there are not the great western way Bear: i’m out. Arthur: Same, I also feel disgust about my model.
Absolutely hilarious! So glad I found your channel, Sam. Will be revisiting often. Getting somewhat weary of Scotty Kilmer's daily diatribe albeit quiet entertaining. Hopefully you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2023 !!
Remember that tank engine that had a rating of less than 5 out of 10 Sam, Also I told you that that model train would be on this list. Also, Marry Christmas Sam!!
Surprised about the Class 35. I've had a Heljan 35 since 2010 and it has by FAR the best mechanism of any 00 scale loco I've seen. Smooth at all speed ranges, quiet and powerful. Still runs like brand new with hundreds of hours of running time and only an occasional light oiling for servicing. With the accessory parts applied, it looks fine. I'm assuming they've taken shortcuts in their later EFE version (for example my 2010 release DOES have sprung buffers) and are having issues with quality control now.
Glad yours was good - I suppose things must have moved on a lot in the past 12 years... or perhaps moved backwards in the case of Heljan, because this one was far from impressive! Very surprised to hear the older one has sprung buffers... so they actually downgraded it for the super expensive EFE one? Or they've reverted back to an even earlier design? Absolutely insane! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Turns out after having a look, mine doesn't have sprung buffers. Just assumed it did based on how nice everything else on it is. Nonetheless, still a brilliant model - at least from that release.
Hey same i think i might have an idea for your Next Best & Worst Model Train video. I think you should do a video of The Best & Worst Model Train of the decade or do a video of your favorite model train of the decade. It's just a thought also great video these videos are my favorite to watch keep up the great work 👍👍😀😀
I find it kinda surprising that Bachmann was responsible for 4/5 of these locomotives, now I will be nice to the ivatt 2mt and say it is nice… to scrap as parts for my custom Bachmann Ho scale Nia. Good video Sam and keep up the good work.
My favorite videos of yours are the silly ones. Obviously bad model Locomotives is a VERY SERIOUS TOPIC but you made this fun and happy for the kiddies 😁
The gandy dancer is a good model for custom 0-4-0s that are very, very small. People like TidmouthThunderbolt and Leokimvideos have made customs using the gandy dancer.
I know you *think* that fitting 10p LEDs isn't a big deal and shouldn't cause the price to rise so drastically, but did you consider the 1.5p current limiting resistors that are needed too? :)
Hi there Sam ,, I hope yuo and your fanmily have a gr8 christmas and a better cheaper New Year for 2023. You certainly are 1 funny dude & i get a good laugh out of your humour and really do appreciate it. So thanks again and hope all goes well for the next year. Cheers from John in Australia.
I agree with four of the engines, seeing as one is a stinky diesel. The one I don't agree with is poor little Miss 64xx Pannier Tank Engine. She's a Great Western Steamy Sister of mine, and I love her very much whether she performs well or not. Please don't punish the little matchbox on wheels, I love her, she's beautiful. No matter what you say, I'm sticking up for her because she's a Really Useful Engine. If she were in my collection and she didn't run very well or there was a different issue, I wouldn't punish her. I'd take her to a model shop for repairs. I say she deserves a second chance.
That's fair enough Kelly - the 64xx is nice enough, it's just far too basic for what it costs in my opinion... don't have a massive problem with simpler locos as long as their simplicity is reflected in the asking price! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam I thought you were done for a couple weeks for Christmas and New Year. Glad to see you dropped in another video Thanks from across the pond. Just a note if you think BACHMAN is bad there you should see them here n America. I would place them in the category of dog chew toys. If you can find anyone that carries them you will find that 99% of them only run with plastic trucks AND plastic wheel sets on any thing but the engines where they need metal pick up. In 50 years of modeling the ONLY thing I have used BACHMAN cars for is very heavy weathering in junk yard lay outs. I use them because I can not justify the use of my blue box (ATHREN) rolling stock to just junk it. Over the years my Blue Box and MARX equipment has served me well in all scales. I do also use different scales on the same layout just to get depth and separation. My personal favorite is using HO and N scale. HO in the fore ground with N scale in higher mountain layout where I want to make it look like you are looking at ground level and into the high Sierras of Donner Canyon using the N scale at a height of 1 meter and back against the wall to give the appearance of distance. Again thank you for the sarcastic, but funny, review of the worst of '22 and I do have to say the final engine to the crusher was a great choice (if it were me I would have been glad to really crush it even at the price point you paid)
Not yet! I take my break after new years, to return mid-January - got plenty more videos still to come! Thanks for sharing your approach - very interesting stuff! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Watching both of these videos again really makes me think how Bachmann had a great year, but also one of the worst years ever. So many great new models and annoying ripoff older ones.
