It started off such a solid day, we had a big crew of 9. The first 3 laps were fun and conditions were prime but things turned bad on the 4th lap when we got to the skull drop. This is one of the gnarliest features in OC. Its a 20 ft drop but the run in is really steep and will want to pull your nose down so its really important to yank on this drop. I always pop just to be sure. Kyle and Matt did it first. On their first attempts they both went a little nose heavy but they both hiked back up to hit it clean the 2nd time. Although Calvin was nervous he felt confident with the feature. Unfortunately he didnt pull up hard enough and the front dove, Calvin went OTB head first and rag dolled down. It was the worse crash I have ever seen.
I cant explain that gut wrenching feeling you get when you see your friend take a 20 ft drop hit the ground head first and watch his body go limp and flip like a rag doll. The impact was so hard that his helmet left a big indention into the ground. It is truly a miracle that Calvin didn't break his neck, become paralyzed or ...even worse. When I got down to Calvin, he was awake, coherent and was even joking. But every minute that went by he started losing his memory. Luckily Matt who's a nurse told us we needed to get him down to the hospital as soon as possible.
Seeing this crash in person and watching Calvin sit up and joking can only be described as a miracle. We had a big group there was 9 of us. Kyle walked him down while the rest of us carried his bike and helmet. None of us really understood the severity of it except for Matt. We figured since he was talking and coherent he was ok.
Kyle drove Calvin to the hospital and once they admitted him to the ER they immediately took X Rays, CT scans and MRI then they rushed him to Trauma Center. They were afraid he had brain bleed, once I heard that my heart sank. I felt so guilty and helpless. That was when I asked for prayers. I want to truly thank everyone who prayed for Calvin 🙏🙏🙏 God answered our prayers, Calvin was released from the following day with no broken neck and no brain bleed nothing but a fat lip and sore ankle. The doctors and nurses were all shocked he was ok.
I didnt want to post this video until we knew Calvin was ok. He told me yesterday to go ahead and post it after he was released from hospital but I wasnt ready to watch the crash. Calvin wants his crash to show people how dangerous our sport can be and how important it is to wear good protection.
Huge thanks to the crew who helped Calvin down 🙏
There were some trolls on my IG post giving coaching advice or what Calvin did wrong. Seriously? Go F yourself don't need your negative comments here especially from someone whos never done this feature let alone seen it. Its very gnarly feature and we all crash its part of the sport. Obviously this was a big one and Calvin is blessed that God protected him. Its been a huge learning experience for me and I hope in some ways this video has helped you. Please everyone ride safe out there.
