The WORST RECEIVER GAME in Detroit Lions HISTORY | Cardinals @ Lions (1989)

During week 1 of the 1989 NFL season at the Pontiac Silverdome, in a game between the Detroit Lions and Phoenix Cardinals, Lions wide receiver Jeff Chadwick had just about the worst game imaginable, and what has to be, quite easily, the worst game by any receiver in the history of the Lions franchise. He dropped four passes in a losing effort, got benched, and got cut straight after the game, ending his illustrious career with the team overnight. This is the story behind the game

That catch is now known as The Catch II. He picked one hell of a time to redeem himself with a monster catch to win the game over arch nemesis Green Bay Packers who were the big gorilla at that time. The catch was even more dramatic since he got brutally sandwich-hit on both sides as he brought the ball in, not dropping it, scoring the TD.

I remember another touchdown Chadwick scored in Kansas City. It’s when he was with the Seahawks and they were playing in KC on Veterans Day 1990. Derrick Thomas recorded an NFL record seven sacks that day. But on one of the occasions when Seahawks Quarterback Dave Krieg was upright he hit Chadwick on a long touchdown pass, the Seahawks first of the game. The Seahawks went on to win that game, getting their first win in KC since 1980. This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how the Cardinals almost traded with the Lions before the season to get the #3 pick. The Cardinals would have used it to take another Sanders, Deion.

Barry had just signed his rookie contract after a holdout a day or two before this game, and he only knew one play. Wayne wanted to bring him in slowly, since he wasn’t in game shape. That said, Wayne probably wished that he had gone to him much sooner after Barry’s first series.

@@matthewdaley746 Absolutely off topic as well as false. That Oilers loss had much more to do with special teams collapses than the Oilers’ offense. Oilers dominated time of possession in the game. Falcons had success with the Run and Shoot until they lost their QB Jeff George. First team in history with three 1000 receivers and a 1000 yard rusher in 1995, I believe… And Oilers OC Kevin Gilbride had success with the Giants, winning two super bowls while making heavy use of Run and Shoot concepts.
@stevenbauer4799

@Ragtime4

@@stevenbauer4799 False. Oilers dominated the time of possession battle 37-23. If I remember right, oilers Run and Shoot had a drive during the third quarter collapse end in a fumbled hold on a FG attempt by greg montgomery. There was also an onside kick recovery by the Bills, on a baffling play where the Oilers were not prepared. There is nothing about the Run and Shoot that played a significant part in the collapse that couldn’t happen with any other offense.
@stevenbauer4799
@stevenbauer4799 2 года назад
well believe what you want. there is a reason run n shoot offenses don't win titles. oilers offense failed to convert third downs and had too many three and outs. that combined with sloppieness on special teams did them in. oilers only ran the ball 21 times that day. yes oilers won the time of possession. but not when it counted. And moon threw the ball 50 times that game. Reich with bills behind all game only threw 34 passes. And the d collasped as well meaning offense should have been more ball control to keep bills offense off of field . That's why d coordinator eddy was fired and replaced with buddy ryan after the decable.

Fontes’ decision to not start Barry was not inexplicable at all. Barry did not participate in preseason, and did not sign with the team until the Thursday before this game. Playing Barry at all in those circumstances is something that the vast majority of coaches might not do. Fontes should get credit for playing Barry in this game. No reason to critique him for not starting Barry given the circumstances.

I don't buy what Fontes was selling at all. It was all about that afternoon or he would have cut him after the preseason. At the very least he wouldn't have been a starter. That Lions team lost 9 in row counting preseason & were 2 & 8 at one point but finished up at 7 & 9. It's a shame that since there heydays of the 50's (aside from some Sanders, Sims, Stafford, & Megatron highlights) The Lions have had mostly dark times. Little fact about Joe Ferguson; He's the reason the Bills switched to red helmets. In there division in the 80's everyone but the Jets had white helmets & he couldn't tell teammates from opponents on the field. So problem solved. It didn't help his game but he could tell them apart at least.
