The WORST restraints on roller coasters 

As a non-rollercoaster enthusiast, I would have prefered photos to show the restraints

I actually like the soft over the shoulder intamin restraint with the exception of the weird square shaped lap bar

The RMC restraints gave me a bruise when i went on Twisted Colossus at SFMM. To be fair, I stapled myself, so if I had left myself have a little wiggle room, I could've enjoyed the air time and hangtime on it.

The NYNY restrains are actually premiere rides, though the og Togo's also made you feel like you were being murdered by the yakuza :)

For Superman the Ride, they should give it new trains with the types of lap bars that can be found in the newer Intamin coasters.

B&Ms classic over the shoulder restraints are designed to lock themselves, yes, even of you lock them loosely at the station they would definitely be locking further at bottom of the first drop.

My favorites: 1. B&M old-school OTSRs - love 'em. Not too tight, not too bulky. Just keep your head forward on older rides and they won't bash your head. (I've ridden tons of B&M loopers with these, always a treat. For me they're a special highlight of the inverts and Southern divers) 2. B&M clamshells - so much freedom! Very well shaped, leaves lot of lap and leg room. I especially like them on 2nd gen. hypers with the staggered seats 'cause there's a bit of extra room between your feet and the floor (I've ridden Apollo, Nitro, Diamondback, Intimidator, and Fury 325) 3. Intamin T-bars/PTC bars - I feel the same way about both. I do like how the Phillies can adjust during the ride, though as long as I never get stapled with T-bars (which rarely happens), I can almost forget that these restraints are even there (I've ridden Millennium, Dragster, Darien Lake's Superman, and a bunch of Phillies including both KD/KI Racers, KD Grizzly, Blue Streak, Hershey Comet, SFNE Thunderbolt) HM: Intamin straps - I actually like these. The hard-plastic ones are absolute shite (most notably on Ka), but the straps I find to me comfy and really non-restrictive. (Maverick, Fahrenheit, Storm Runner, I305) The worst (keep in mind I'm tall): 1. Arrow old-school OTSR - they pinch, they bang, they constrict, and they bruise. And Arrow's train designs were kinda shite in general. Well-profiled Arrows usually fare well and I can overlook them (Nessie, SFMM Viper, Carolina Cyclone), but most of the time I find myself bracing throughout the ride more than I'm actually enjoying it (Hate them on the Corkscrew coasters, they ruined Darein Lake's Viper which would've otherwise been an upper-mid tier Arrow, and also any Vekoma boomerang that uses these Arrow-esuqe trains/OTSRs) 2. SFNE Superman U-bricks - my goodness. First time I rode this, I got stapled and it felt like wearing a belt with an anvil attached to it. It's the ultimate airtime-killer. By the time I got off, I felt like keeling over from how tight they were. 3. RMC shin-guards - they never ruin a ride for me, but I gotta say as a tall person they really scronch me up. It's only an issue when I'm boarding as once an RMC begins I can usually find airtime galore and I forget all about my shins being at a weird acute angle to the seat (SteVe and Wicked Cyclone in my count) (Dis)honorable mention: X2's weird-ass things - like the RMC shinguards, not a big deal once X2 got started. They're so weird and hard to put on. I thought my ribcage was going to twist trying to get these things across me. (Very similar to the Vekoma flyers Firehawk and Nighthawk, but I thought even those did this style of harness better) Haven't ridden Skyrush yet.

Skyrush leaves marks on my legs lol. But the pain is worth the ride except when u sit on the breakrun and they take FOREVER to dispatch the train in the station

if I ever get a ride on skyrush I'm going to try sitting up while the employees check my restraint (anti-stapling method I use on my local batman clone and american thunder) and I just won't touch my lap bar once during the ride. I already keep my hands up like I'll die instantly if I hold on lol

you forgot the OTSRs on Vekoma SLCs, probably the worst restraints I've ever experienced, they are too big and there is physically no way to avoid headbanging on them

The over the shoulder, into the genital restraint at six flags Darien lake is terrible. I cried out in pain when the restraint checking worker punched me in the genitals with the over the shoulder, into the genitals restraint. The coaster is called "the mind eraser". It's just too painful.

i like b&m vest restraints, but maybe that’s bc i work at wild eagle. idk when it was done but our vest restraints don’t lock during the ride anymore. they’re still constraining to some and it’s not easy to lift them but they don’t lock down like they used to

the vest restraints on valkyria are pretty good. they are pretty loose

I had a horrible experience with the restraints on Escape from Gringotts. Those restraints, on the drop, crushed my thighs so hard. I was in so much pain that I didn't really pay attention to the rest of the ride. Intamin and their damn restraints! I make sure I HOLD that sucker up as much as I can during the ride now to prevent it from coming down and crushing my soul.

Son you haven’t lived long enough to see old school restraints, I’m not talking about the older woods with lap bars that smashed your peas and carrots and also could come loose outta no where shit when I first rode magnum in the 80”s I remember thinking how much more comfortable of a ride it was than all the past coasters , even through it is it that old draken fire ets an honorable mention but the cyclone at crystal beach had an on duty nurse to assist riders that required medical treatment after the ride no silky smooth steal these coasters were long before computer design and were largely trial and error with a lot of error most people these days are too soft for that type of unrelenting punishment

When I went on Skyrush, surprisingly I wasn't in any pain. Although it did hurt my sister and mother, they were complaining for another week. You should talk about Green Lantern's restraints in Six Flags NJ, it was so painful I was dying to get off of the ride as soon as we passed the first loop.

It’s sad to see a roller coaster like Superman The Ride be butchered by its restraints. It sucks that an otherwise perfect ride can be butchered by an idiotic accident that wasn’t even Intamin’s fault, but a result of poor maintenance. Six Flags New England is my home park, and while I think the restraints are bearable, they deduct much of the air time away from the first airtime hill. I think that Six Flags should invest in new B and M clamshell trains.

Dishonorable mentions from me: Timberliner restraints (And maurer X-car restraints). Having restraints fold over from the side is just a terrible idea since they'll only fit one size of person well and every other size of person will either not have the restraint come over them evenly or, in my case, push the passenger into the side of the car with force and put a bunch of pressure on the waist. Definitely more true of the Timberliners than the X-Cars. And then if the coaster is rough, like Mineblower is, being pushed into the side of your seat with the restraint not even just makes it more hellish. Vekoma SLC restraints. What more do I need to say other than head-bang hell?

Modern Intamin restraints are REALLY good though. You will hopefully soon experience them on Pantheon, but they absolutly are.

No wonder why people call it thigh crush. B&M OTSRs, B&M clamshells, PTC L bars, premier rides u bricks, mack rides OTSLBs, and all T bars are all amazing restraints. Buzz bars make family coasters thrilling for even the most seasoned coaster enthusiasts. Hopefully B&M cracks the formula to perfect the best restraints. I never ridden a B&M with vests but, the vest restraints on their flying coasters are probably much better than the vests on their other models.

I've ridden one or more ride with all these, sans the U Brick and Togo shoulder pads (which are out of America now anyway), and all of them are leagues better than the RMC lap brick. I can ride Skyrush multiple times in a row, but after one go on an RMC my thighs are bruised. Also why does it have shin guards? There is literally no reason a sit down ride needs damn shin guards.

btw you forgot the zamperlas Eurofighter Knock off restraints. They're f bs....even worst than skyrush.

B&M vests are really Not Good. For me as an Tall Person i couldnt get the Buckle in. It Took 2 staff to close them.

once at the end of skyrush the restraints didint loosen and I just had to sit there with it crushing my left ball

How are Zamperla Vokares not on here? I know Skyrush is a "love it or hate it" (and I certainly love it, I can ride without pain) but even if you hate it, those restraints aren't worse than a Volare cage. Or the old school bulky SLC restraints for that matter.

The most painful coaster restraints I've personally experienced are ride of steel six flags america, the SHIN GUARD FROM HELL put so much pressure in to my shins, i couldn't enjoy the ride. I personally have no issues with skyrush, not good, but I can marathon skyrush, ride of steel, no way.

I guess I'm too skinny because the B&M vest restraints don't even touch my thighs. They dig into my hip bones, and it hurts like hell. I'm always sitting on the final break runs taking deep breaths to try to manage the pain in my hips that I need to massage after I get off. It's a shame because otherwise I actually would prefer the vest restraints over the standard hard over the shoulder ones because they eliminate headbanging and thus I don't have to ride defensively.

i disagree with your opinion on vest restraints. On most B&Ms i have rode, those are more comfy then raptors restraints.

My sister passed out from pain in her thighs the first time she went on Sky rush.

I personally think restraints can't break a ride, but I do think they can make a ride, I mean look at phoenix. Also I didn't think the skyrush restraints were that bad. They were uncomfortable during the ride but not super painful for me, but sitting on the break run, now that's what true suffering feels like.

Worst ride I ever got on was Viper at Six Flags Magic Mountain because of the restraints. Check out the comments under that video and everyone is complaining about getting their neck, head, and ears fucked up after riding.

Skyrush was the only coaster here I have ever been on and needless to say I'm never getting on it again. I actually felt like I was gonna die.

Yes yes screw those arrow lap bars. Last time time I went I magnum I got bruses on my legs on the ejector airtime hills at the end.

I have experienced the soft over the shoulder restraints and they don’t bother me. I actually kind of like them and the vest restraints didn’t bother me either. Then again I’m very thin.

The worst I think I’ve experienced are on Copperhead Strike. I straight up felt the circulation getting cut off from my legs.

I've always found superman's restraints to be quite painful because they come to a point at the bottom and it jabs into my thighs, but at least SOMEONE can ride it without pain. Maybe I just need to ride skyrush and then superman won't seem so bad 😂

After I rode Skyrush, I had bruises on my legs for almost a week. I hate to say it, but I actually like the B&M vest restraints. They are comfortable and I still experience airtime on them.

Colossus at Thorpe Park has by far the worst restraints in my opinion, they’re bulky and heavy, no padding and no matter how much you brace yourself you will wham your head into the restraints, especially on the cobra roll. It’s a shame because I do really enjoy the coaster, it has a good layout and nice forces and good interactions with the terrain and pathways, but those restraints are a -10/10. They also hurt throughput a lot because the heaviness and the ops have to pull them up after every unload since they don’t lift up automatically and they aren’t too forgiving for larger riders either.

Cant believe you forgot about the knife restraints on the world famous Knife Coaster in Tampa Bay Busch Gardens where its a regular full torso harness but knives are hot glued to the inside so they stab you

I agree with all the picks except soft Intamin over the shoulder restraints. They feel very similar to good vest restraints in my opinion and I actually thought they felt very comfortable on a ride like Maverick. The two restraints I’d add to this list though would be all old Vekoma restraints and any Arrow restraints including X-2. Also Vest restraints are horrible and I don’t get anyone who likes them. Also I’d love to see a list of the best restraints in the future!

The intamin OTSR aren’t even that bad. I quite like them and think they’re pretty good. Definitely better than best restraints and the u-brick. Although I will admit that the new intamin lap bars look much better.

What about Vekoma vests, KumbaK vests (T3), and Zierer lapbars (Impulse and Wicked)?

I didn't mind skyrush restraints that much. They're not good but they're not bad in my opinion. For pros they're lap bars and they're super small so you feel really exposed. While they did staple me they rested on my thighs so I still got crazy airtime. And while they are uncomfortable during the ride I only found them painful on one of my eight rides. But I will admit, sitting on the break run, now that's what suffering feels like

I find the arrow lap bars on magnum pretty good. They are a tad painful if you don't know how to ride magnum. Quick tip: move your body down in the seat and get them over a thicker part of your thigh. I marathon magnum using this technique
