My favourite scenes are the one where Cathy goes to buy Jill a present from the jewellers and Jill doesn’t like it and makes her go all the way back up the hill in her wheelchair to exchange it and she rocks up in her car and then just tells her she’d rather have the money. The other scene I love from season two is where she’s using a turkey baster to get pregnant 😂
@@Problembeing yeah man you must have a incredibly high cringe tolerance hahaha I normally love that stuff but especially the present sequence was too much for me. Both are excellently written and performed pieces of cringe comedy, if everyone could handle it then it wouldn't work!
My favourite scene is Jill & Glen’s wedding in the mental hospital. There’s just too much mentalness to take in in one viewing. My second best is the dating agency (71.) Finally I have to give a mention to ‘What’s my IQ Jill?’ ‘A sausage dog Linda’
I re-watched this a couple of years ago and it's just as dark and funny as the first time. Jill is the classic psychopath, absolutely nothing redeaming about her character at all. It's very well written, to the point of being uncomfortable.
Really like this video series! Very good videos, highlighting some absolute gems that aren't discussed enough. Not sure if you've been recommended Human Remains, that's worth checking out. Julia Davis and Rob Brydon worked so well together. A bit different but there were some great bits in High Spirits with Shirley Ghostman. Some of it is pretty dated now but a very good character performance as well as satirising the TV psychics popular at the time.
Human Remains is second only to Nighty Night, imho!! absolute genius! dark, original and wickedly funny!! love it!! More than Happy is our favourite, Les & Rae are brilliant characters lol! each episode is individually excellent, well worth multiple watches
Great video. Loved this, loved Jam, amazing weird British comedy. Also, it’s not British, but if you want weird underrated comedies, you might like ‘Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories’, it’s a very surreal comedy/horror anthology and is usually missed in their discography (sort of like a 15 minute version of Inside No. 9 (or Black Mirror)).
I was living in the UK for a couple of years just as Nighty Night first came out. Not being from there, I wasn't exposed to as much British comedy as someone who had lived there their entire lives. So I had previously enjoyed "Mind Your Language", "French & Saunders", "Absolutely Fabulous", "Keeping Up Appearances" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!", among others. Nothing could have prepared me for Nighty Night in the early to mid 2000s. It was unlike anything I had seen before. Especially the first series (Series 2 got a little bit too silly and exaggerated in a slapstick sort of way). And I guess I wasn't so averse to the fat, regional trope on account of being a foreigner, and therefore the interactions between Jill and Linda worked fine for me. I loved the character Joy, despite her limited screen time. I think your analysis is pretty spot on - great video! In passing, Nighty Night was on our screens roughly the same time as Little Britain and The Catherine Tate Show, both of which I loved for a short while, though I very quickly got fed-up with Little Britain having permeated too many aspects of life (the promo stuff was everywhere, everybody was constantly quoting characters, etc.). I can still enjoy Catherine Tate, but can't stand Little Britain any more. I don't have any difficulty watching Nighty Night again every few years. I think it has aged pretty well for someone like me who doesn't mind off-colour jokes, and who is not offended by everything.
@Rory interesting video, just wanna say that these characters they exist in real life, i mean they are exaggerated for the purpose of this being a sitcom, but they exist, the dancing scenes, there's plenty of women in their late 40's dancing and acting like teenagers trying to compensate the fact you can control ageing... i agree they might not be funny for everyone, as for my personal opinion i'm still looking for a show that will surpass this one as my favorite of all time... PS_ did you watch Spaced and Wild West?
My daughter introduced this to me, she said "don't think you'll like this mam and knowing my daughter I said "no I won't. However I laughed so much, it's great. Am 63 years old and I loved this but my sence of humour is dark.
It's actually Jane Stanness (who's been in loads of Julia's other shows, like Human Remains, Hunderby and Sally4Ever) although she does look very like Amelia in that scene!
My algorithm must be working to have this recommended to me. Julia Davis' Nighty Night is epic, as is anything by Chris Morris, Ammando Iannucci, Charlie Brooker, Marc Wooton, Paul Garner or Kay. If you haven't ever; check Dennis Penis, Mike Strutter, and Shirley Ghostman.
You do feel sympathy for Jill.....we don't know if she was aboosed or not, she's in a shit marriage and someone that narcissistic deserves some sympathy
Johnny Vegas is the funniest FAR (Fat and regional), because his comedy isn't based on that, it's about the fact that he's actually a very sensitive and emotionally vulnerable person, which sort of flips the trope on its head. This really hit home when he did his poem on the John Cooper Clarke episode of 8 out of 10 cats does countdown.
I've always been frustrated by society always pairing learning disabilities synonymously with "weirdos", etc...it's how things are socially in today's-- no scratch that...in society full stop....it's always been the same and probably always will be
If you liked this, a similar thing to look at (that's done a bit differently) is charity shop sue - I'd be really interested in your take on that. And it's all on available youtube
First of all just wanna say love your interests everything from the grimey mid 2000s music taste to your taste in alternative/dark/underground comedy and your Blunt uninterested voice compliments the tone of your videos very well (probs cos your mic is shit) but anyways without insulting you anymore have you watched Big train or psychoville as I see very little mention of those two shows these days and see them as very decent underated comedies that get little to no mention and would think they'd be perfect for a series like this.
I like to think my lack of enthusiasm, poor audio and general low production level make this channel what it is! Cheers for recommendations, will add them to the list. Thanks for watching mate
A southern snob not going to help your subscription drive RORY, must be a Celt in there somewhere? What about your southern monotone I’m about to fall asleep cause I’m so bored accent then? Lol
I think Linda better fits the stupid employee punch bag trope with characters like Balderick and Manuel (although not quite as funny) than the fat regional trope. I think she's hilarious, but agree that she would be better if she was slim with an RP accent.
I felt the same, I nearly stopped watching a quarter of the way in, but I’m glad I watched until the end, in which time the tone changed to balanced, reasoned and interesting-
