Man i love your channel. A real prize in the shit pile. I missed Green Day during the Am Idiot phse but found it later and love it. Yknow its Billie Joe instantly. He has such a unique voice in terms of phrasing. anyway keep it up.
Finn Mckenty: At the Drive in sucks. There is music that you have to get over by the age of 15 Also Finn: I´m going to make a video about how American Idiot is the best punk song ever and how Blink 182 are incredible
@@IHateMyAccountName a lot of their records hold up. Vaya is still amazing and the early stuff is great old school emo. To me they are one of those bands where they don’t have a really bad album.
@@jeremyrice9589 I can see that and respect it I don’t like some of the music he shows cuz it wasn’t my thing. After I saw him say the pixies are over rated or something I get. I thought he would be open and give them props like he does with other bands who are bad but says what they did good that’s why I like him haha but it’s all cool jusy his taste he is still a cool dude
In Hs I helped organize a walkout against the Iraq War. I was obsessed w Anti Flag and all the political punk bands of the time. I grew up a Green Day and Op Ivy and Rancid fan, and somehow when American Idiot came out I didn't get excited that my old favorite band could appeal to my new political identity, I thought it was cringe. So just goes to show punks are pieces of shit who aren't happy.
I too liked Green Day up and to this point. I think it's because it didnt come off as genuine after all those years. That's what I believe anyways. Still love Propaghandi tho haha.
@@boejudden9011 i think it has to do more with the fact that green day are like really watered down pop punk. Im not a punk, but is green day black flag? Green day is like the quintessential emo middle schooler "punk" band from 2007 to mid 2010s. Even if they got political, they just you know? It hardly has any bite or sting
@@candideggplant1575 That version of "watered down" punk probably made more people think about the social and political issues of the time now than all "real punk" bands put together!
@@alexandersokolov4992 sure, early to mid 2000s was the bush era. Everyone had something to say. American Idiot was massively successful and even that is an understatement, still influential to this day. Just that it was kinda downplayed by the fact that it was one of THE emo albums, doubt many 13 year old emo kids were highly aware and conscious of what was going on in that time
I worked at home Depot tool rental for a year and that Ashlee Simpson song became the BANE of my existence. I heard it like 3 times a day at work AND at whatever grocery I had to stop at on the way home. It's permanently burned into my brain
Yep, it was a cover band staple. I'm a bass player, so I got drafted into every coverband my local music school had. I had to play this song with kids half my age who had just started guitar all the damn time. Good times.
Yeah I still like it too, as well as a couple of their other songs. I guess I just don't have that hate on for the garage rock stuff, I generally liked it 😅😆
Gotta love Finn's little fantasy examples about people like fourteen year old Jaden with his N64 rumble pack playing Smash Bros while drinking Baja Blast Mountain Dew or whatever. Always funny.
i got to see Green Day perform live for free one time and i legit thought they were a tribute band to Green Day until my friend assured me this was the real deal.
I was listening to Jesus of Suburbia for the first time in years the other day and I was surprised how well it held up over time for me personally. It’s crazy to think of how much they’ve changed their sound from Dookie to American Idiot despite still mainly playing power chords
American Idiot is such a weird album to me because as much as I'm not a fan of the title track and most of the singles, the album tracks are really well done.
Green Day seemingly played every weekend, usually at Gilman, back in the day. I was in three separate bands that opened for them, two of which were crossover HC/thrash so they played with everyone. Forever Bay Area legends, regardless of what you think of their music and/or star status.
I've heard One Armed Scissor at 15 from a friend and that was exactly what he said - "this is much weirder and cooler than all your nu metal shit", He was kind of kid to kick a trashcan on the way and yell dumb stuff to girls face to scare them in the hallways
Yeah feels like he’s trolling certain fan bases. At least I hope so. Because if that’s his actual take.. oof.. especially coming from someone who calls himself “punk rock mba” 😂
Apologies in advance if someone already mentioned this: The Ashlee Simpson performance fell apart because she already played "Pieces of Me" in the first segment. The second was supposed to be a different song and she was taken off guard because she was expecting a different song. I actually saw this live on TV when it happened.
Yes...I don't think she was getting near as much heat for the lip sync as she was for not being a pro about it. Loads of artists lip sync for various issues, but it's just how she handled it so poorly
I’d find Ashlee’s mishap so much easier to forgive if not for the closing sequence of that SNL show where she took the microphone and threw her band straight under the bus for playing the wrong song. Her whole family is a bunch of hacks. The 23-year old version of me thought her song “La La” was kind of cute, though. So there’s that, at least.
@@AlligatorArms Bingo, that's her real blunder. So the whole world realized that it was lip-sync, big deal. It didn't magically turn into that because the band played "the wrong song". Someone backstage hit play on "the wrong song".
Exactly! 🤣 They did their best to capture the spirit of some of classic rock's best acts, but they just don't have the personality to pull it off and it falls flat.
I saw them live at a Festival (Big Day Out, which is a summer thing here in Australia), I'd never heard them before but performance blew my mind, that was a pretty sweet festival lineup, I saw Queens of the Stone Age and PJ Harvey the same day. Needless to say ATDI impressed me so much I bought all their albums. They broke up later the same year and Omar and Cedric formed Mars Volta another incredible band.
Hey Finn, longtime fan here. I just wanted to say that I appreciate you not putting down juggalos or ICP. I've lived in small town Nebraska most of my life, and ICP/Juggalo culture was kind of big here. It's truly unfortunate how much juggalos get shit on. They're true outcasts, but they're some of the most compassionate people I know. Most juggalos I knew went through terrible domestic and drug abuse, and unfortunately, they didn't have access to any sort of support. The juggalo community was all they had, and they're truly accepting of all in my experience. I was never into the music (I mostly listen to jazz, folk, etc), but I always loved how welcoming juggalos were. Also let's not forget the elephant in the room; juggalos almost always live in impoverished communities, and there's nothing more tastemakers hate than poor people. Is ICP's music bad? Yeah but so is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, but I wonder why nobody shits on their fans? Hint: They drive Subarus and live in Portland suburbia. I'm not trying to go off on a tangent here, and whatever I want to say you'll probably say it if you make a video about ICP. I just want to say thanks and keep doing what you're doing. P.S. I'm still waiting for your book 👀 I'm more into personal development than MGK drama (no shade). I'm certain your book would be a great resource for the juggalo community. Food for thought 🌱
Here in Brazil we have this Popload Festival that for it's 2018 lineup had At the Drive In, Death Cab for Cutie, Blondie, MGMT and Lorde all on the same stage. Of course Lorde fans booed ATDI and gave us, the only 14 people who were there to see ATDI, weird looks for the whole set. It was funny to watch Cedric telling them to f**k off though
See the thing with the Ashlee Simpson SNL situation was it wasn’t just the lip-synching, after the fact she basically blamed the band which is complete BS so I think that definitely had a lot to do with her getting flack
Finn is so interesting in his tastes. When he has talked about heavier genres in the past, he recommends some music with the grimiest and nastiest production (which I like sometimes so it's not a dig) but he also openly enjoys stuff like pop and country which usually have really slick production and stuff. It's interesting to see his commentary on the At The Drive In song and the Hoku song in particular because they really feel like polar opposites in terms of production/style. It's just really interesting. Maybe because I feel the same as him in some aspects but it's definitely cool to see someone who isn't just stuck on the genres they liked when they were 15 years old.
@@L.D.1 Finn's not being taken serious because he has a varied music taste? Strange. People can like one thing for a reason and dislike something for the same reason because it doesn't work as well for them. It's called preference and I don't think it is because he's worried about whether something will be "mainstream". If that was the case, Finn wouldn't cover alternative music at all, he'd cover exclusively pop music.
@@zakk219 You missed the point, it's not bad to have a varied music taste. I have that too. But the way he critics music is kinda weird these days, he hears metal or punk and he looks at it with pop music goggles. That's the thing.
@@L.D.1 I will admit that I haven't watched many of his critiques/reactions to new music as that isn't really my thing so I don't entirely have the context you're referring to so I don't know if I can really comment on that. I do think there is merit in listening to other genres through the lens of pop music, though. It allows you to see why a song might appeal to more people or a certain audience.
@@zakk219 For sure, again, I'm not arguing having a diverse music taste is stupid. But you must kinda view different music styles with different goggles.
That hoku song was in a super deep crevice of my brain. Had way too many stints with depression and addiction over the years to place it. stored in my brain next to “o town- liquid dream” and those early 2000’s colorful tube tops that looked like a cross between a piñata and a Chinese finger trap
Hates System of a Down, At the Drive in, and Coheed and Cambria, but loves emo rap, 2000's tween pop, and bands like Emmure. And somehow I'm the one with out any taste. 🤔
A lot of people (mostly oldschool Green Day fans) thought American Idiot was when the band went to shit. Honestly I thought that was their last great album. They took the pop centric tones of American Idiot & Completely flanderized it in 21st Century Breakdown
If American Idiot wasn’t so overplayed people would respect it as one of the best punk songs ever. Also, this era of Green Day was textbook for the beginnings of true Pop-Punk.
kinda strange that Finn didn’t mention (for those who doesn’t know it and hear ATD for the first time in the stream) that Cedric’s and Omar’s next band kinda was sensational and innovative & their very first album still holds up in every single aspect. i’m talking about Mars Volta of course. so, you know, the fact that ATD were often not so good is sometimes what it takes to find your artistic voice to truly make great art at the end of the day
“The duck walks across the street, he sees things we do not see, we think he’s insane but we are the insane ones” At the drive in fans: You don’t get it. Glassjaw shit on At the Drive in.
I cannot stand for the ATDI slander, and yes this is my 2nd comment because i had to leave and now im back finishing the video. I hope you're joking on this one because ATDI and the mars volta were revolutionary for their genres imo. I'm not a music expert but that's my opinion.
Love you Finn but not entirely sure how you can clown on At the Drive In whilst simultaneously praising old grind/death metal music that is literally guitars being beat up and recorded in a vacuum cleaner, doesn't add up bro 😂
Finn:listens to shitty, under produced, out of tune punk music "wow it's so raw, I love this sound. " Finn listens to shitty underproduced 2003 metalcore: ugh, it's just awful, acid, drives a vw jetta, and just so gritty.
Finn doesn't like bands that make comic books. He also doesn't like "most" of their "hardcore" fans that will push them as the best band ever. I personally love Coheed, but I don't push their music on anyone. I never got into the comic books, but enjoy their music. Everyone's taste in music is different.
@@moej6014 yea Coheed fans can be kinda awful in my experience. Saw them and BTBAM in Philly and their fans just booed the entire time BTBAM played. It was so strange. Like you realize shows have other bands playing, right?
Damn juggalos in other states sound pretty chill, but here in NY every one of them that I've met are very racist people and generally have a swastika tattoo within a 1 foot radius of their running clown tattoo
I mean....she kinda deserved it. She didn't even ATTEMPT to sing meaning she likely lip syncs entirely as opposed to just having backing tracks so she should have been drug through shit. I mean how are you gonna be Jessica Simpsons sister, use that to launch a career, and somehow not learn how to sing live?
Has 'I Don't Want You Back' by Eamon been reviewed on one of these yet? That definitely deserves some appreciation. Not forgetting the diss track that his ex did in response as well.
Bro I went to see Shaggy 2 dope for the heck of it once and was taken aback by how NICE everyone I talked to was at the concert Juggalos really do get a bad rap also looks like im getting a ton of pamphlets from Finn
A 40 year man gushing over an early 2000s one hit wonder bubblegum pop artist is wayyyyyy cringier than a 40 year old man listening to At the Drive In. And for the record I also hate all that post punk/garage rock/indie bulllshit so don't @ me.
To be fair, do Green Day look like a local band, or do local bands look like Green Day? I don't really remember the shirt/red skinny tie thing happening on a mainstream level until Green Day. Yeah, you always had the Husker Du/Replacements types do that, but it wasn't as widespread. Also, the disrespect shown to Coheed and Cambria! I will fully accept I'm a fuckin' nerd for listening to them, but I do feel like they're a "Specifically for someone, but something for everyone" kinda bands. As someone who somewhat enjoys The Hives and "Get Free" by The Vines... Jet suck. Burn that song to the ground. Also to anyone who complains that Finn is too "normie", he's essentially the guy that "Suburban Home" by Descendents is about, and what's more punk than that?!
Omg i forgot the cringe of Ashley Simpson's "bad song performance". I heard they force bands to use backing tracks. The cringe sent a chill down my spine, i am cringing for her, not at her.
I think being out of tune was actually the goal of At The Drive In. That made those bands different from nu-metal and pop-punk. Finn just misses the point
God, _American Idiot_ was the most middle-of-the-road, mediocre album. I remember thinking when it came out, as a teenager, that all of the chord progressions were just mind-numbingly boring and predictable and the overall message of the album was like entry-level rebellious and incredibly cringe.
@@powerviolentnightmare5026 Right, because we all know _The Princess Bride_ is known for it's subversive alt-right messaging. I love the irony of you just assuming I'm White while accusing _me_ of being a right-wing edgelord. I highly doubt that as a black dude that's spent my entire life in either NYC or SF that I'm prone to be a fan of Jordan Peterson or to "threaten trans kids with a gun" or whatever tf you said. Also, resorting to ad hominem when someone expresses an opinion you disagree with (about Green Day's _American Idiot_ of all things) is definitely an indicator of a lack of intellectual resources.
Fun anecdote. My friend growing up who was an amazing musician and liked Green Day but didn't care for most other Punk stuff, heard this song for the first time and said to me "Who is this poor man's Green Day?". Idk if it's just that memory or what, but I never really cared much for this song. The rest of this album is pure fire, but this song always kind of underwhelmed me. Also, for the record, Warning is an extremely underrated album. I know you think it's "just okay", but how long has it been since you gave it a spin? You might feel differently after all this time.
The Ashley Simpson thing with the backing tracks I remember when that happened she had her own reality show and on that show you find out she had meningitis or something along the lines where she couldn't sing and she wasn't going to perform but they wanted her to and had her do the backing tracks and she agreed and everything else is history which is kind of funny because that never got brought up it's just that she was a talentless hack and her musical career was over
Also, those old colorful iMacs running System 9 or whatever were great. Every little click and drag makes an adorable noise. Sure, they weren't PCs, and the game selection wasn't as good, but we had our goddamn HyperCard and Escape Velocity and we liked it, damnit. Sorry, Grandma needs to take her medicine and put her Dismember record on the gramophone, I'm 37 and old already.
Macys-Core. Relaxed fit jeans, those weird shirts with the sewn in long sleeves.... old ladies blasting your face with perfume if you wander into the wrong section of the store... we need to bring this shit back!
I would love to see a reaction of innocent people walking past your house whilst you’re live and in full flow! Kid: ‘What did that man say dad?’ Dad: ‘Why don’t you drink fucking beer?! What’s the matter are you queer??’ Awesome content Today finn, and your spot with FM was pure gold! Nice one! I had a shite day and needed this. 🇬🇧 ❤️
