Internet Analysis: "no longer vegan" videos. I myself am vegan so I thought it'd be fitting to finally discuss what I think about the increasing number of youtubers quitting veganism. TIME STAMPS BELOW, if you'd like to skip around.
Most recently, Rawvana and Raw Alignment announced that they are no longer vegan. As always, the vegan community has been posting response videos. In this video, I discuss my thoughts, and what I believe are the worst things about these ex-vegan videos.
TIME STAMPS:
1:02 - what inspired me to go vegan in 2015
1:28 - misinformation in the vegan RU-vid community. Restrictive diets such as raw, raw til 4, HCLF, no oil... plus juice cleanses and water fasts.
2:24 - ridiculous claims that veganism cures everything
2:58 - no longer vegan because they got sick
3:22 - response videos guess what went wrong and make suggestions
3:41 - restrictive diets can cause deficiencies or gut damage
4:59 - the lie that vegans don't need to worry about getting enough protein or other nutrients
5:50 - the "pure" section of vegans who are anti-supplement
6:12 - I personally didn't supplement for years, but now I do
6:46 - the importance of getting blood tests done
7:05 - ex vegans were sick but still selling e-books and posting what they eat in a day
7:44 - many still have their vegan videos public and monetized
7:59 - fish and eggs, the magical cure?
9:17 - what are better ways to address health struggles on a vegan diet?
10:21 - these creators should warn their viewers not to make the same mistakes, and they shouldn't share their new diets or experiments
11:19 - common comments on no longer vegan videos, including that they're bad for veganism or were bribed by animal agriculture?
12:18 - they were NEVER vegan / they were fake vegan
12:46 - vegan for the animals VS for the environment or health
14:03 - elitist veganism, you must be perfect
14:36 - vegan to carnivore.. wtf
15:22 - can people really be vegan forever? is it sustainable?

I had a lot of stomach pain and other digestive issues after going vegan. After about four years I went back to being vegetarian (which I've been for 30 years) and I felt better instantly. But I kept trying to go back to veganism for about five years, and every time I went vegan the stomach pain came back so I'd quit. What the hell, right? Turns out it was ULCERATIVE COLITIS. Fiber is murder for my digestive system. When I was vegan I was eating all these beautiful fruits and veggies and whole grains, but they were incredibly painful to digest! So it's not just a lack of nutrients that might be the problem. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case it might help someone else.
@NamesChuck
@NamesChuck 4 года назад
Oh no! Perhaps sticking to low fiber plant foods is the way to go? And since ethics AND health are important I think you could make the case for eating oysters, too.
@AVE_YAMA
@AVE_YAMA 4 года назад
I have crohns. Something similar happens to me when I try to eat vegan. I get realllly sick from the fiber intake. I still eat a mostly vegan diet but occassionally eat small amounts of eggs, meat, or dairy. It's more sustainable that way for me. It's better for my health and I think it can still make a difference to consume minimal animal products.
@camille4574
@camille4574 4 года назад
I think this highlights something important too. How many of these ex-vegan RU-vidrs are consulting their GP about their diet? I think it's really important to talk to a medical professional if you start having any kind of persistent symptoms, they should be able to give you *advice, get you tests, etc. Too many people take their health into their own hands or the hands of other potentially bogus RU-vidrs without understanding what they're actually doing to their body.
@pepin5591
@pepin5591 4 года назад
Strange, I have severe ulcers in my stomach (not quite the same, I know) and the gastroenterologist said it was good I was vegan because of the fibre and lack of dairy. It did hurt at first but as it turns out, 95%+ of Americans don’t get enough fibre and when they finally do they typically adjust. How is it that it’s veganism that does that to you when the only difference is you’re really just eating egg and milk then and still not meat?

Underrated food tip for vegans: learn how to cook Indian or ayurvedic cuisine! Hindus and other dharmic/Vedic societies have survived for literally millennia on a cruelty free diet. A typical meal is filling, has all the food groups, and can be catered towards your body type. A french fry is technically vegan, but of course you're not going to get any health benefits through a diet of fried veggies. Be smart and learn how to cook. EDIT: Just to be clear, I am not saying all Hindus are vegetarian, or even vegan. I am saying that many traditional dharmic meals are vegetarian and can easily be made vegan, while still being healthy.

It’s not realistic to ask millions of people to be vegan. It is realistic to ask people to cut down on meat, trying to eat vegetarian or vegan once or twice a week. It’s also not food that’s the main cause for concern when talking about saving the planet and people need to stop acting like it is. We need to finally accept that it’s the big companies and the rich that simply don’t give a fuck, and we can do something about it collectively.
@arran6392

Very well said. I went vegetarian 1 year ago, but quickly switched over to veganism. My family of 4 eats vegan at home, but my father and sibling eat animal products when we go to restaurants, dinner parties, etc. I recently decided to use honey as a sweetener, not all the time but not to replace it with something such as brown rice syrup. I think local, sustainable honey is better to use (in my case) than imported, expensive brown rice syrup from an unknown source.

These 'beachy vegans' make vegans as a whole look so flaky. I'm beyond over it. They're vegan for a couple years, eat insane diets and then quit 'veganism.' Like, it's not veganism that failed you, it's your orthorexia. Most of us are normal people who eat normal things. The Bonny Rebeccas, rawvanas, and raw alignments of the community are only here for the aesthetics and $$$. Here one day, gone the next. And the freelee and vegan gain types make us look insane. I'm over the airy-faries and the crazies. They give the whole community a bad name.

@@asdfghjkl-oo7lv I have noooo idea what she's doing. I wouldn't be surprised if she was cheating with animal products, but I don't outright suspect she is. Her lifestyle seems unsustainable and she probably eats more cooked food than she lets on. Just a guess, it's hard to believe she could be raw only for so long. If she really is good for her. I was like 80% raw for the first 8 months I was vegan and I honestly felt incredible. But it's a huge inconvenience. The eye thing is weird to me, but there's an old pseudoscience called iridology which is where I believe she's coming from with the claim. On one hand it makes sense that if you're really toxic your eyes might reflect that in the iris, like it does with jaundice in the eye whites or skin with acne. Honestly who knows. Also, hello fellow vegan!

THIS! it’s really annoying because as soon and people find out I’m vegan, a lot of them automatically assume I’m some sort of psycho who’s going to spend all my time lecturing them about “lettuce=good, steak=bad” instead of just being a (relatively) normal person who happens to not eat or buy animal products. And then it ends up turning out the opposite way with some people because as soon as they hear the “v” word, they just start banging on about steak and refuse to change the subject.

If Veganism is the best option for the planet as many vegans say, then don’t you think it’s unrealistic for everyone to be able to get a nutritionist? Veganism is a diet that can only be sustained for so long. I went vegan for 5 months in 2018 and I’m still experiencing gut/bowel problems 2 years later because it RUINED me. Long term issues is why so many people are now becoming ex vegan.

But regular consumption of meat is unhealthy even for the person if they're not burning off the excessive cholesterol. also, if you go completely vegan, you don't get all the required elements, at least not in this day and age, you need to take either chemical based or animal based supplements to fulfill those requirements. hope that helps!

I wouldn't even get an appointment with a doctor unless I actually had a problem with my health. The nurse would hung up the phone on me if I said "I want to talk to a doctor about possibly eating more cale."
@TheAudraReins
@TheAudraReins 5 лет назад
@@WickedNPC I mean, choosing not to speak to someone is up to you. It's no different than alcohol stating to "drink responsibly." If you end up drunk and puking, you can't sue Jack Daniel's, because you were told. Choosing not to listen, at that point, becomes your responsibility. People want to know what someone does to work out and keep fit, however, just saying, "I'm on the blah blah diet, it's awesome" is not giving the viewer any information as to whether or not that is something they should even attempt.

It’s so frustrating to see influencers jump from fad diet to fad diet in search of what will give them the best body or help them lose weight. It really shows that their decision to go vegan was never because of their concern for animal rights! Instead, it seems like a lot of vegan RU-vidrs have developed disordered eating habits themselves, using the guise of veganism or HCLF or whatever to cover up their unhealthy eating patterns. Yikes. Thanks for telling it straight, Tiffany.

You can never evaluate someone’s health solely based off their weight. 2. Healthcare MUST be tailored to the individual. Every body is different and none of them will react in the same way. What works for one person does not mean it will work for you. So it’s so important to consider your own bodies needs when considering a restrictive diet. Also, I HATE when people claim that veganism cured the EDs. All their doing is swapping one restrictive diet for another. And they can get away with it bc it’s “for the animals”

Not only that, but dairy milk contains actual large amounts of mammalian estrogen, and does have the negative impact on health. Also all the vitamins that you think vegans are low on, are extremely easy to supplement, get from fortified vegan foods (FYI all meat is fortified and supplemented), or are just super easy to get from beans, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and so on. I’m raising an extremely healthy vegan 18 month old, who gets more that enough iron and protein and DHA and vitamin B12, B6, D3, etc because I understand nutrition and what a child needs. He is regularly monitored, but all 3 of the pediatricians at our hospital firmly support a properly planned vegan diet for children off all ages and stages of life, as does the American Dietetics Association, and the World Health Organization. Sarah I’m sorry, are you referring to American vegans who supplement, or are you speaking broadly regarding ALL Americans who supplement? Because strict vegans, at bare bones minimum, should take a B12 supp, as it’s very hard to get through an entirely plant based diet (there’s a lot of research on this and its importance). Additionally, several studies have suggested that vegans require at least half as much zinc as the average omni. Now, the American populous as a whole, yeah, for sure, short of a daily multivitamin, there’s almost never a reason for the average person to take any supplements. I don’t know how supplements are made available in Europe (like can you also buy them over the counter? Do you have to ask the pharmacist for them? Do you need a prescription?), but I suspect a lot of the reason Americans are SO into them is because they’re INCREDIBLY poorly regulated by the FDA, so all sorts of claims can be made out the wazoo about what taking this little pill might do, regardless of whether it’s factual. Naturally, I don’t know how y’all’s regulations regarding supplements are, but, from what I’ve heard about the EU equivalent to FDA, I would bet they pull the reins a lot tighter on supps, and, if so, it may explain why Europeans aren’t as rabid for supps as us Americans are. Personally, I take a B12 & multivitamin, along with a Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc supp (since we likely need more zinc than most, and also because I’m a woman with bone issues...gotta get that calcium!).

I live in England & there is certainly more suspicion around suppliments. Funnily enough due to the weather nearly everyone in the mid or north of the UK is low in vitamin D. If you present certian symptoms often your GP will suggest vitamins as a first or second suggestion. People will usually agree to it because it is a doctor, however if a random person suggests a vitamin to help with a particular ailment there is a lot of scepticism & mistrust. Vitamins seems to be tied to holistic medicine, where there certainly are people who make outlandish claims (like curing autism!) However all non NHS treatments seem to be portrayed in a negative light. (Similarly osteopaths & chiropractors do not seem as respected despite helping certian conditions. Like any job there will be people who are useless or all talk no action but that is the same as professionals including doctors, I think that reality is just too scary to most people.) It used to just be dieticians who mentioned vitamins & minerals, or people who care for the elderly as they are more prone to gastro problems which limits what nutrition they can intake food & drink. Then random consultants like glucosamine for joint pain & a few other limited conditions. However recently gastroenterologists have been flinging vitamins & minerals left & right! Even on the NHS website it mentions certian vitamins & minerals as treatment for certian ailments. So it certainly is becoming more popular in England, out of interest where do you live?
@NotAnotherKuromi
@NotAnotherKuromi 5 лет назад
You make a good point about the US food, as more people all over the world do not create freshly prepared food but eat much convenience food & takeaways, we are bound to be missing certian things our body needs. That is before we even discuss the amount of chemicals now involved in the food process. Perhaps some of it is that people have realized that although drs suggest a balanced diet & regular exercise, many people simply do not do it, do are trying to find second best short term sollution? It's a little nieve to say people using dietary supplements isn't common overseas. They are just more commonly used in their raw form, or made into a broth or drink rather than a pill. Many different countries use supplimts as well as the US. My girlfriend is Chinese & her mum has a suggested suppliment or leaf for every ailment! It is a bit silly to say no-one would benifit from additional nutritional input, unless you have a food diary & related blood test results of each individual, you are unable to reach an informed conclusion. Drs do not notice all medical problems, especially if the symptoms are vague & minor like fatigue or pain. (Anecdotally my grandma had type 2 diabitus for years before her Dr realised what was causing her health problems. That was with her nagging the doctors regularly, think how many get told there is nothing wrong & go on struggling, or never visit the Dr in the first place.) In the UK if you do recognise something is wrong & go to your GP they only do a set of standard blood tests which, depending on your demographics, will likely just be checking for anemia, kidney function, liver function, inflamation markers... Not a complete MOT at all. How does your doctor/ first line of defense medical person act & what tests would they run? With 99% of vitamins & minerals, especially over the counter ones (& those availably legally in the west) if you consume too much your body will just expell it, usually through urine. So it is just a waste of time, effort & money, not detrimental to your health.

Extremes are never a good thing imo. If every person who eats meat regularly reduced the amount of meat they eat on average, the positive impact on the environment and animals would be much greater than if a small percentage of people went strictly vegan.

I eat mostly plant-based and I used to have a co-worker who told me that she had been completely vegan for 2 years but had quit recently bc she had some kind of intestinal disease that was made a lot worse by eating only plant-based foods. I just told her that if being vegan made her sick, she should focus on her health and eat what's best for her. I do sometimes wonder what would've happened had I gone "feral vegan" on her and talked down to her and been mean to her bc she had quit veganism-she would've thought that I was the meanest, rudest person ever, right? And then she might have gotten turned off from veganism entirely. So even IF I had truly thought that you "have to" be vegan to be "a good person", it's not very smart to ACTUALLY SAY that bc it just makes you look rude and makes people less likely to listen to you in the future.

I have never been vegan or vegetarian but for a while I was mostly eating vegetables because I suddenly got really grossed out by the idea of eating certain meats. After a couple years of mostly eating vegetables I started having digestive issues. And sadly if I eat too much broccoli it hurts my stomach. I love broccoli 😢 but I think for me having some kind of a balance of foods works best for my body.

A friend of mine with Chron's disease can't eat many vegatables due to it flaring up her condition, her diet is very limited and if she was to go vegan, she'd be very sick. A lot of people seem to think cutting meat and milk out of diets will help people's chronic IBDs or IBS when in reality, everyone's food triggers are different.

Normalgirlize I had an eating disorder at 12. (Anorexia) it was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me: my growth stunted, I developed bone problems, etc. but I am vegan and it has saved me. I don’t say that to sound cheesy or to say that veganism is the cure for everyone but for me it was. It made me look at food in a different way, not looking at food as calories but food as a fuel and nutrition. I did not go vegan right away and I think that really helped me. I limited my meat consumption, then went vegetarian, then gave up dairy and eggs. Now I’ve been vegan for almost 2 years (I’m 14). I regularly supplement, and eat plant based food with lots of healthy fats, protein, carbs, etc. I don’t restrict myself with any food, and veganism is so much more than just the food. It’s an ethical, and lifestyle change. It has made me connect with the animals and earth and has changed my way of living.

I really appreciate vegans who believe in people doing what they can, even if it means not fully going vegan. I myself cut red meat completely in April, and it was fine because I didn't really like the taste of it anyway. I still eat chicken and rarely fish, but I try to avoid eating it when I can. I also noticed that my lactose intolerance has become worse over the years and I find myself buying almond milk coffee creamer and coconut milk ice cream. I also think it's cool how certain food/cosmetic companies are coming out with products that make cutting animal product easier, like Silk almond milk offering dairy-free yogurt that tastes the same and vegan makeup that works just as well. I like the idea of being completely vegan one day, but it's not reasonable for me now as I'm shit at nutrition and I don't want to put my body at risk. Chill, understanding vegans help me feel a lot better about the steps I have taken though. Thanks for understanding :)

Reduction is an amazing step, good on you! I've had the same approach for years, I still eat fish and red meat on occasion. Currently I'm following a low FODMAP diet for IBD, so animal products are okay but either I dislike them or am trying to limit them due to moral compass, but soy, tofu, and peas are off limits so it makes being vegan or vegetarian extremely hard. I do love almond milk and Silk's non-dairy creamers, so glad that alternatives are becoming more mainstream.

I was inspired by the way vegans used to present their diets online (raw vegan and very restrictive) when I was 14/15. I could only become vegetarian because that’s what my parents would allow. It led to the WORST diet I’ve ever had in my life for two years. I’d lie to my friends and say I loved the lifestyle, when really I was restricting my eating so much (and also trying to be vegan without my parents knowing) that I made myself very ill. Another super interesting analysis video! I think the practice of labeling foods as good/pure vs. bad (whether it’s vegan/keto/whatever) fuels so much negativity as people use it to both police others and create internal shame whenever they slip up and eat something they’ve deemed “bad.” It’s a really hard habit to unlearn, and people attach so much of their identity to food - really embodying “you are what you eat” mentality - so seeing anybody who chooses something different as healthy is seen as an attack on their own “virtue.” I really like your point about being in control of your own health and using objective measurements like a blood test. That’s something I need to be better about as well!

You also understand why they are like this? They are living in a genocide... babies are being dragged away from their mothers... murdered and eaten. I believe its best to have a combination of both, MOST of these hateful vegans are intelligent and kind souls and to see them get this worked up wakes some people up, while the "chill vegans" help those that get defensive bring their guard down and take veganism seriously. When I was a hateful vegan I turned more people vegan than I do now. You can dislike them but they are not in the wrong for being upset over this. It's no different from telling someone to chill while their mother is raped.... for some this is far more real... they wake up every morning in pain and that turns to hatred. I know this because I still wake up in pain.. I let go of my hatred a long time ago to improve my mental health, I just suffer in silence now.

This person responded, “Medjool dates!!!!!” I was absolutely shocked, and even responded about how this wasn’t a meal. Someone defended the original poster, and over time, I started to accept that it was normal for some people to just eat fruit or dates and “mono meals.” Obviously now, as I’ve done more research and watched videos on the importance of eating balanced vegan meals, I’m back to thinking dates is a ridiculous meal (and not actually a meal at all). However, I do think it’s hard sometimes, especially as you’re starting out in your vegan journey, when there is so much misinformation and frankly dangerous advice out there. Yes, it does matter.

I went vegan at age 14 and I followed freelee a raw till 4 diet. I was young and impressionable and I thought it was completely normal to eat raw till 4, no oil, no salt,fruitarian, no supplements (including protein powder), no garlic, no onions diet. I found freelee and Kristina because I had an ED and thought their diets would help me lose MORE weight. Thank god that’s less common now. Needless to say I got really nutrient deficient and week and lost most of my muscle mass (not that I had much to begin with) I’m so glad I found out about how to actually eat a good well rounded research based vegan diet! Now I’ve been vegan for 7 years and JUST started feeling well.

The problem is when a personal ethical choice is marketed as a health and beauty and {insert fear here} solution for anyone. Does not make sense. You cannot claim that a diet that is hard to intuitively follow can possibly be more healthy than the basic sustainable ones used by EVERY civilization EVER. Secondly is mistaking the way things are done with the problematic root and drawing logical leaps from that...

Another problem with the “Why I’m no longer vegan” videos is that, for some reason, omnivores think that the ex-vegans are more credible than present vegans. Then they see all these stories of people who ended up having health problems and just blamed it on being vegan and they take it to heart. Which just adds to other misinformation they probably found. Everyone’s bodies are different and what works for some people your body might not tolerate. That’s not an excuse to eat meat, because there’s nothing in meat that you can’t get vegan. But there are things in meat that you can’t get from just eating fruit like some of these raw vegans do lol. I feel like people say vegan is unhealthy but it’s like no, you just aren’t getting enough vitamin D. 😂

I mean it's still important to remark that there are some things that one does have to supplement when going vegan, e.g. vitamin B12 which just doesn't occur in amounts large enough to be sustainable outside of animal products. I am not saying this to discredit veganism, I think that it's a great way to help the environment and can be incredibly healthy, I am just saying that one has to do their research and be careful to meet all dietary needs. That being said,I am so mad at omnivores pretending like only vegans and vegetarians have to worry about not meeting all their dietary needs when many (if not most) omnivores never really put any thought into their needs and whether they are getting all their nutrients. I am pretty sure that most adults I know don't get enough of every single vitamin they need and plenty of people I know have high cholesterol or a number of other issues. But if I went and suggested to them that maybe they should cut out meat they would probably look at me like I grew a second head. I think on average more vegans pay close attention to their dietary needs than the average omnivore, but people tend to be really dismissive of vegans in that regard when really anybody could benefit of that kind of insight.

@@issumusi A literal food desert is NOT the result of poor education on the person's part, and neither is actual health problems. A food desert is an area with poor residents and a lack of healthy options for food, such as supermarkets, which also entirely eliminates their ability to have affordable vegan food when they cant even get affordable food at all. Over 23 million Americans live in food deserts, and its an actual issue that cannot be solved with just education to the wannabe vegan.

I started noticing I was having gut issues when I ate eggs, so I cut down on my dairy intake in general, and through me, my husband has stopped consuming as much dairy. This has introduced us to starting to make more vegan choices - using plant based protein powder in smoothies instead of whey, using oat milk instead of lactaid, trying chickpeas instead of chicken in curry, etc. - and while it started for our own health, there is also a validation to knowing these choices are helpful to the environment and animals. Also, being conscious about one area of a diet can lead to being conscious about others and open doors for experimentation and discovery. Basically what I'm trying to say is that approaching veganism via small changes instead jumping in the deep end head first is way more accessible to a lot of people.

As someone with both depression and ADHD, I find eating in general is just difficult. Convincing myself to put in the effort and get something to eat can take so much of my energy. At the end of the day, meat is good protein, and it's yummy. It's the easiest for me to work with and make any meal based on. I use beans when possible, some more specific stuff like peanut butter, but I can buy some chicken breasts and know that I can MAKE something out of this that I will enjoy. Sometimes different things have different values, and I'll eat any kind of food if it'll get me to eat.

I think one of the major issues with aggressive veganism is that it fails to recognize that it is a privilege to be able to live healthily without animal products. I was fully vegan for 2 years, but now I live in a village in Georgia (the country not the state) and things such as alternatives milks, meats, and things that tend to be common in a healthy, plant-based diet are not easily available to me. When I go to the city where these products can be found in Euro grocery stores they are so expensive relative to the salary of the people living here. The same goes for cafes and restaurants, while there are many vegan/veg friendly options the prices are grossly inflated because the ingredients and substitutes are pricey, but also they are primarily visited by tourists. Sorry for the long comment but I think the topic of accessibility or lack-thereof to non-animal products is not discussed nearly enough. Yes, fruits and vegetables are available, but not everyone can afford/have access to the other vegan staples that allow people to have enough protein or other nutrients.

I've also noticed through my years of being treated for ED that many people with ED use veganism as a tool for restriction. When I am deep in calorie restriction it helps to have motivation to not eat and those skinny, "pure" vegan influencers definitely fill that "thinspo" niche. I don't want to speculate on other people, but I can't help but notice similarities between their food habits and my own disordered eating habits. Sometimes veganism is just another way to maintain control in our diets. That being said, responsible veganism is definitely a good thing if done correctly.

I'm vegetarian, and I've been harassed by vegans for drinking milk/ eating eggs. I understand where the anger comes from, and I'm free to admit I'm far from perfect, but I think that attacking someone who is doing the best they can is unwise. Eating less animal products is a definitely a good thing, but people doing a little bit should be encouraged too. I wear and have bought second hand leather boots, for example; to many vegans this would be seen as abhorrent, and I agree that it is not ethically sound from some perspectives, but I make sure to get secondhand boots and that's a little bit better. People who have two days a week being vegetarian/ vegan are doing a little too and shouldn't be shamed for it. It's baby steps to progress, and attacking those who are trying is often what turns people off a more environmentally aware diet.

I don't understand how someone can complain about misinformation being spread about vegan diets, and then in the very same video spread misinformation about supplements. Sure vegans may need SOME supplements to maintain a healthy diet, but definitely not the shopping list read off in the video - half that stuff doesn't even primarily come from animal products for those who aren't vegans and a good vegan diet is more than enough to make sure you're not deficient in those vitamins and minerals. I know for sure that a vegan almost certainly should not need to take a zinc supplement, and I have personal experience with that one in specific. If you're eating a balanced non-vegan diet then you probably don't need any supplements at all, unless you've had a blood test done that shows you are deficient in something. It is not a good idea to take a bunch of random supplements "just in case" because you can actually cause yourself harm. The regulation for the supplement market is an absolute joke, people make ridiculous claims about what they can do for you based on no science and get away with it because apparently even though people put this stuff in their bodies just like they do with food and drugs, the FDA doesn't think it is important if they tell the truth and make sure their products are safe before letting people buy them. Maybe because these supplement companies are making huge profits and can afford to grease the right wheels to make sure they can continue to get away with making outrageous claims about supplements and making people who don't need them at all think they do. I wouldn't even be surprised if some of the people complaining of stomach problems and stuff had these problems not because their vegan diet wasn't diverse enough to get them the vitamins and minerals they need, but because they routinely overdose on a vitamin or mineral - stomach problems is a common side effect from overdosing on that stuff. My parents used to be crazy about their supplements, and then my dad started having frequent stomach cramps, diarrhea and nausea (like nearly every day) and when they went to the doctor for a blood test it showed he had waaay too much zinc in his diet from all the supplements, and the issues disappeared as soon as he stopped taking them. You get plenty of zinc from stuff like beans, nuts and seeds and there is no need to take a supplement for it.

i’ve been vegetarian (along with cutting out dairy, i would go fully vegan but it’s a process and veganism is harder when we dont have much money) going on 3 years now, and i will never go back to eating meat. i hate hearing about people like this, because i am constantly told that when i am sick or in pain, its because im vegetarian. i do have some digestive problems and other health problems that were preexisting so i take vitamins and prescribed supplements from my doctor, as well as catering my diet to prevent flare ups. these health problems have nothing to do with being vegetarian, they are because of how my body is made unfortunately and eating meat again will not “cure” me. its so frustrating, the pain and sickness i deal with is always immediately discounted because “well obviously its because you’re vegetarian”....

A mixture of anemia and a soy allergy keeps me from really going vegan. Plus the fact that a lot of vegan recipes and diets rely heavily on nuts and beans for protein and the rise over the decade in nut farming and bean farms is a major factor in deforestation and contributimg more exploitative work environments in the country my family is originally from. Which sucks because, I'll be honest, I LOVE almonds.

Um, so you care about the environmental destruction caused by farming nuts and beans, but NOT the environment devastation caused by animal agriculture? Much of deforestation is caused by raising plant crops that is fed to animals! A vegan world would actually allow us to return farmland back to the wilderness since we could grow much less food. There is absolutely no environmental reason not to go vegan. Please look it up. And what about the exploitative work environments in slaughter houses and factory farms? Many people who work in these terrible places often suffer from PTSD, because the shit they are doing to animals is so f***ed up. Many hate what they do, and will risk their jobs helping vegans save slaughterhouse-destined animals. They have no other option but to work in terrible conditions doing a job that makes them sick. Of course, then there’s the suffering experienced by the billions of animals raised and killed in this industry. You really need to do more research if living ethically is an actual priority for you, which you seem to imply in your comment. And btw, iron supplementing is cheap and easy and soy isn’t necessary on a vegan diet. And PLEASE stop spreading false information just so you can feel justified as you continue to make poor food choices! Okay, my angry vegan rant in response to ignorant comments on the internet is finished....

My issue with vegan diets is that a lot of people use them to cover for eating disorders. I’ve had friends who used being vegan as a way to heavily restrict and limit their caloric intake under the guise of being ‘clean’ and ‘healthy’. Because vegans struggle with getting enough nutrients and protein this can be seriously dangerous. My friend is no longer vegan, but because she had undiagnosed anorexia for a year when going vegan she now struggles with Osteoporosis and tooth issues from lack of calcium. Please be careful if you go vegan to make sure you aren’t covering for something else and that you are getting enough nutrition. My friend has permanent health issues because she used being vegan as a way to cover here ED.
