Thank you for saving my battle. I also thought about hiding army and sniping but I chose the stonehorn as target and it was constantly running away. Second part of the battle is just brilliant :D

You can attach heroes to you're caravans which would make battles like this wayyy easier instead of needing legend to use ultimate cheese

The Stonehorn might look more menacing but Greasus gives everything around him 10% ward save with his item, so taking that away was also a good move from Legend.

It is a lot better though. They will spread out in sieges instead of clumping up for a juicy aoe at the start.

@Green Warrior Monke It's not just that. It also tries to dodge spells way more, goes for flanks more, and is improved in a lot of ways. That said, the shogun 2 ai was far superior. We can give credit where it is due, but still acknowledge its myriad faults.

Another round where Legend goes in "I'm not sure I can win this" --> 13 casualties. Me "I'm not sure I can win this" --> general vs general leadership fight at the end both armies all dead.

Only time I thought "I'm not sure I can win this" and I won (rather than losing like normally happens) I soloed 700 Skaven with my melee general after the entire rest of each of our armies died It was the first battle for the blessed dread where you attack the settlement

Sky lanterns need to be grouped up by 3 in a unit, even if HP pool remains the same. This way they actually deal a considerable amount of damage. And create a feel of an actual armada. Said mod makes them viable to have in your army.

Make them become sort of flying ballista just like the normal crane gunner will be fair enough. In that way, that fat useless lord can finnally be useful as a ranged lord too.

My first thought, when I saw the Cathay trailer was, that lanterns will probably suck. they looked even bad in the CG trailer. They gave me war wagon vibes.

The click and drag seems to be a new bug from the patch 1.2, I have struggled a lot with that bug, you can never get the right formation in some situation.

They did add shield breaker to them. So you could use them to support your ranged units to kill shielded units.

They really should give the lantern some more fire power/utility . I don't know about any lore of Cathay, bear that in mind. But they should throw/fire something more explosive, like the miners, grenadiers and chameleon stalkers do. Maybe even specialized, like fire (napalm like, vs undead), magic (against demons), poison/nets (to slow down units), harpoons (vs large and flying). Or specialized missles which you can switch like in atilla. This won't of course deal with the vulnerability, but it at least gives the some actual impact on the battle.

Or just increase the range to 275, much more ammo, extend dps for about 50% and give the real scary shit: trueshot, like asrai ranger femboys. It will dramatically improve their utility in multiplayer and even in singleplayer battles. So, if enemy ignores skylantern - they just slowly tear down enemy lords and heroes. Or u can use from long range to react AI to attack or cheese that shit to kill greasus for example))

When I first tried WH3 as Cathay I like Sky lanterns. They looked nice and was a little different than just playing reskinned dwarves with worse artillery. Then I asked myself why battles were so hard when we had 5 Sky lanterns in one army. That's when I realised sky lanterns just no.

i think the purpose of sky lanterns is for you to be able to apply harmonic boosts to the frontline without standing THAT close to it with your ranged units to be fair to them when I was testing them in custom battle I first tried 4 melee cathay units vs 4 khrone warriors, then 3 melee + sky lanter and they did actually do better against those warriors But then again you could just take jade crossbowmen instead and have the bonus of actually dealing damage

they did better because sky lanterns did more damage than the 1 unit of jade warrior. 4 jade warriors is 2000 gold in mp, 3 jade warrior + sky lantern = 2400 gold.

that click and drag thing started for me after last update and I hope CA will quickly fix it ,it’s making my battles so unpleasant I can’t even count how many times my units were weirdly positioned because I didn’t spend 10 seconds just to make sure they are moving like I want them to

is the tech still there to set a target for the skylantern then go manual and rotate it for pinpoint accuracy, because now the flintlocks only shoot when lined up and not doing the bad swiveling they do when trying to shoot all at once?

Hello, I just started watching LegendOfTotalWar few days ago and I love his videos, does anyone know how he does the repositioning of the formation without loosing it? If I just click ground with selected units, they go into a straight line (which is really stupid), if I hold alt and click the units get a little narrower everytime I do it (eventually ruining the formation as well)

I understand! Skylanterns should be the FIRST unit in game which can shoot multiple enemy units in one time! With no other improvements - just multishot. Applying shieldbreaker to several units in time and deal about 4x more damage at the same time will be good buff for this unit and still have their "cathayan" concept of unit, who are weak alone, but strong in good and smart army :)

Can anyone explain to me how you deal with larger armies (that also have cavalry and chariots) as Cathay? I just setup my crossbowmen and arty and everything but my formation just breaks when the enemy’s cav arrives

I've found that these two uses are literally the only real good use for Lanterns is cheesing the AI into thinking "THESE ARE IMPORTANT!" and lord sniping unshielded lords, i try and run the caravan that has two in them just for the sake of these two things because sniping an ogre lord before it hits my front line is sometimes detrimental to saving a battle. Lantern's ammo and fire rate need some massive buffs if they remain single entities, considering the overpowered nature of other gun units (looking at you Skryre) I feel like CA is apprehensive about making them decent JUST BECAUSE they're a flying unit, especially since CA apparently wants us playing their way instead of the sandbox style us players treat Total Warhammer.

the sky lanterns and sky junks can be good against Slaanesh because of the lack of flying units with the except of furies. but is not a problem If you have longma riders.

Lanterns are substantially better after the patch than they were on launch, because they also got the same piercing shots buff that the Crane Gunners received. They still aren't really *good*, but they're not really utter trash anymore either.

When I first had a sky lantern in my army I thought it was just a buff unit because I could not identify the damage it was dealing. It is absolutely baffling it exists in the form it does - like who wants to take up an entire army slot for something that's reasonably pricy and does zero damage?

I think you let them on fire at will? They spent a ton of ammo shooting on other targets, if you look at betweem 09:00 and 10:00. The total dmg done wasn't horrible actually

Even with fire at will off they will shoot at the target you don’t tell them to shoot. It’s the case with all skirmish units currently.

sky lamterns realy need a buff maby more ammo ore more dmg or just let every unit have more models. sky junk is one ship and the ground artillery version hase 4 and the ground version of the sky lantern the crane gunners hase 32 so in this formular 8 chips per sky lantern units woud be maby a little bit to much but 4-6 woud work much better

Top tip, add hero's to your caravans for mid to late game caravan doom-stacks. The ambushes get harder and harder, but the caravan can only be upgraded so far.

I speculate that this is a case of the AI being a bit too 'smart' in this case in that when you sniped Greasus it put the sky-lanterns at the top of it's threat evaluation. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be 'smart' enough to realise when it can't actually do any damage to a unit

Sky lanterns - one of the units they used to heavily promo Cathay and the game. Turned out to be a God awful unit. Slow rate of fire. Slow moving. Completely vulnerable to any mobile or long distance skirmishers. It needs way more fire power to be effective and useful. The crew need to be able to drop charges or have a better rate of fire for close enemies to protect itself. They’re so underwhelming.

Can this really be the worst unit? It seems capable of dodging shots to waste ammunition. You can't say that of War Wagons. Anyone got a link to Legend's stream where he had used all the ammo of one and couldn't kill a unit of skinks? I remember that, but couldn't find it.

sky junk should swap names with sky lanterns. iknow iknow junk isn't actually supposed to mean junk as in junkyard. tbh. i think they should have more ammo, or atleast better ammo. as they are now the only use they have is like in the video. To cheese. I haven't had a single battle where they were any use. my biggest mistake ever was to give one of my lords? a sky lantern mount. i had him in the thick of a battle versus khorne and he managed to kill 14 units. not worth it whatsoever.

Pre patch I preferred sky lanterns to crane gunners, they could apply the shield breaker debuff really easily in comparison, But now crane gunners are basically artillery....

To be fair, greasus just has a lot of hp, that's why it's taking so long, it's not necessarily that the sky lanterns are bad At the very least they aren't any worse than gyrocopters or pterodactyls with bolas imo

@@letsplaysvonaja1714 Well, if all other stats remain equal, adding another entity to the unit doubles their damage output, no? They already melt to incoming fire and can't get away from flying melee, so there may not be a huge amount of difference in survivability, really.

Calling Sky Lanterns the Grail Relique of the sky is an insult to the latter. Grail Reliques have some niche uses (mostly in pvp, but even in pve they are occasionally useful). Sky Lanterns are just trash all around.

I think the AI is worse in this compared to WH2. Legendary difficulty with very hard battles feels much easier to me personally, and it has a lot to do with how inept the AI is.

This is the weak point of LOTW. He uses optimal units and doesn't really know the potential of even the worst ones like "sky junk". and this unit is doing pretty well against OGRE early in the campaign. as there are not many units in TWW3, you can check them yourself. it is not worth removing anything. This game is complicated and simple at the same time. had it not been for the terrible "auto-resolve" system, I would probably be outrunning all factions by now. Thank you for the challenge of Legendary level and very difficult battles. However, the bigger challenge is to run the campaigns better than LOTW.

Both the lanterns and the Junk are so fucking terrible. I can't stand either of them. Cathay honestly have the most uninspired roster in the game, and they have both quite a few of the worst and a couple of the best units in the game

Every unit in Cathay roaster are good for now. Peasants are cheap for their stats and have yin yang buffs. All other infantry worst their money. Peasant horsemen not so terrible, longma riders a little bit squishy but can deal with most flying stuff, jade Lancers actually usefull. Lack of melee heroes are compared to mass troops, magick is about ok and LL are not bad. Even the wuxing compass are good now. Artillery is ok and, of cos, terracota terminator is tough and cool. Every unit can be used in one or other ways and have tactical usability in different situations. That all works for multiplayer - in campaign just spam infantry until the mid game, where your economy should be strong enough to have a celestial dragon armies and even terracota spams, that shit really works.
