Bailey Hoskins has just discovered that he's a mutant. For someone who's never been special, never stood out, this could be his big moment. Fun fact; Bailey is in the 616 universe, in the X-men tie in for empyre it’s shown that he died at one point but thanks to the resurrection protocols he’s back, his parents are still alive and is now called Explodey Boy

@@comicpop ohhh Ben on the left threw me off. Sorry Tiffany! You’ve hosted some of my favorite episodes, by the way. I am constantly reminded about your comments in Batman Damned, especially around the artistic controversy. I wish they would let Bermejo release an uncensored Deluxe version as a collector item. “The Partially Examined Life” podcast just did an episode on Roger Scruton’s “Beauty” which touches on Aesthetics, Ethics in representing Human Beauty through art, Vulnerability/Nudity vs Exposure/Porn, and Author Intent vs Audience Response, and many other topics. All of which brought me back to your thoughts in that episode. I would love an episode with exploration of comics in general around this topic with more of your opinions. There are publishers that lean heavily into human beauty, some into scenic beauty, and others into story. I’d love examples where beauty/vulnerability was represented well and also poorly or without taste. I think it’s a nuanced discussion that parents don’t understand, and thus push kids away from certain arts too early, including appreciation of classic art. And that causes parents to not allow comics in the home because they “aren’t like the funny pages anymore.” So I think discussion could do us all some good.

Tiffany mentioned “magical girl syndrome” and since she’s more plugged into the anime/manga world than the rest of the gang, I wonder if she’s familiar with the idea of the “chuunibyou”? It comes from some Japanese light novel or something, but it’s the character archetype of a kid who believes they’re destined for something special and/or secretly have latent magical powers or other such grandiose delusions. Not quite the same thing as the “magical girl syndrome” that i think she was suggesting but made me think of it.

Okay the ending could have been something else. Like Miranda says her screwing with reality made her make Bailey and the fascination is that he is her creation. And now she gives him the opportunity to save the world by stopping Riches and says she'll bring back Bailey in the next reality as an actual hero or something like that. Not really clean, definitely isn't inspiring, but really anything would've been better than "Let's get meta with 6 pages left." And that's a shame because I was actually digging the book.

This is one of those comics I really like and that's because its practically a one-shot book. Like its just a story, no big event or new status quo, just a short few issue story that's just there to be fun. Despite loving most Grant Morrison stuff, i tend to hate when others tackle the same things with how hokey it ends up feeling, but the smallness of this story makes me okay with it.

Remember when Beast was explaining Miranda's powers, IMH Bailey gave her the jump start necessary for her to fix the universe by him killing several linchpin characters in the universe. Yes it's dumb, but it follows the rules of the book I guess.

Hank would be biology since that’s his doctorate (technically it’s genetics but close enough to teach underage people in my book) but as for the remaining characters; Cyclops: is trigonometry due to how he needs to use angles for his powers somethings. Jean is astronomy Storm is African/ African American history and cultures Professor x is public relations and mutant history

Damn, this story was really interesting and going somewhere but that ending doesn't work for me. I'm not saying it should've gotten a more definitive happy ending but it seems that Bemis got caught up in trying to say something that it became incongruous with the narrative.

Coming back to this months later I think the problem with the end is its a bit elementary existentialism, like Beamis read a few books on existentialism and created an ending that he thinks is a way to derive meaning from a meaningless universe. Its the ending of donnie darko and the director cut ending of Butterfly Effect, where through suicide the hero fixes or derives meaning from their experience. I USED to think this was legit but Albert Camus work this is not. And while fighting for something and dying for it can derive meaning in our absurd meaningless universe, I don't think this reflects that, nor from the previous movies I mentioned. Its an elementary way of thinking about existential meaning. And as a christian friend once told me about those previous two movies when discussing them, suicide should never be the end of a story in order to fix things. its a cop out, similar to the it was all a dream. it disengages the reader or viewer from the character in a way that doesn't bring meaning to it. Which is why ALbert Camus' fictional works never have his characters committing suicide but actively playing against it. But i'm a philosophy nerd. otherwise I enjoy the story and read it after the episode came out months ago

I didn't know this comic. It looks very interesting and different. And Sal idea about Nick Fury is good, but the problem is that Ultimate Fury was a total prick. Original Fury wasn't perfect, but the Ultimate one most of the times behaves more like a super villian. I guess they didn't want a douche as the leader of SHIELD.

I remember people debating if this is in continuity or not. But, it's own thing, with its own universe. I don't think Marvel does that much thinking about it.

@@gregcourtney751 he was retconed as being a citizen of genosha, died from the sentinel attack, then Wanda trying to "help" resurrected the genosha victims but it came out bad and they were all zombies

@@MisterKetch I remember. I read empyre to catch up ff. But later in the x men stuff of the event a living explodey boy talks with the zombie one saying hecwas resurrected rightly in the mean time.

Never heard of this prior to two weeks ago and I definitely want to check it out. I don’t know how I feel about that third act but everything leading up to it sounds great
