Absolutely Milly - I find there is a huge difference between reading a book and listening to it being read. This can be quite a touchy subject to some readers who feel criticised if listening to audiobooks is not considered as actual reading. I know I have a deeper understanding and awareness of the style and lyricism of the language in a book and can experience an escapism not possible from audiobooks - the pictures in my head are better in my own reading voice. Because of this, I just can’t get on with audiobooks - I can just about listen to non-fiction (however it’s not ideal), but fiction has to be read in my opinion.

I think both have a place. Like you - words on a page can evoke such emotions and, as you say, pictures. But some of the books I listened to on Audible- I'm thinking of Max Porter's and Caleb Azumah Nelson' s - the poetry and lyricism of these books was enhanced by listening to them. I suppose some books work as Audio and some don't. I never used to listen to them but now find that on car journeys etc, I can't be without a book in my ear.

Exactly the same view. Wanted to love it…. I wonder why we never got Terry’s voice ???? She influenced her daughters, …Connie had a bit of a voice ( the letter) but Terry was silent . Why do you think ?

I felt that Terry had no real influence on the girls and was almost Phil's first 'victim'. Having been abandoned, maybe she didn't feel that her voice was important any more.

I agree, the wren, the wren was pretty meh. And, like you, I wanted to love it. I also enjoyed Carmel as a character more than Nell. Two years ago I read The Gathering and disliked the story and the characters so I'm not sure Anne Enright is an author I can appreciate.

This is my first Anne Enright and with the hype about this novel, yes, I wanted more than I got. But Carmel was a character that I did enjoy.

It depends on the narration as to whether I can absorb the audio like I can the written. In regards to “this” book, I read it in print and have the same feelings. I rated it middle line 3 out of 5). Though the writing, at times, was beautiful, most was just okay. I did not “love” the poetry. The many bird references in Nell’s chapters made me want to look up bird varieties, but yeah, this one was “ok”

I agree - some narrators just lift a book. Fiona Shaw reading the Richard Osman books was excellent. But this one - it wasn’t the narration, I just had no real feeling for the characters - Dolores more than the others perhaps. It was my Number 5

I read this a while ago because I do like this author but I didn’t love it , I was quite disappointed , I thought I was in the minority because there’s a lot of hype about it .

I just didn't really warm to the characters. It was a book that, because it was on the longlist, I almost felt that I was compelled to love it and was disappointed when I didn't

I think it is sometimes better to read than listen but I read this one ( not to the end though) and was not impressed- a big disappointment as I also “wanted” to like it.

Likewise, it had sounded as though it was going to be really special, but I didn't really like the characters. I still prefer a physical book - I like the feel of a book in my hands if that makes sense, but there are some that I have listened to that I just can't imagine 'reading' any other way. For some the lyrical quality of the writing just suits audio. And of course, it gives me something to do on a car journey as I cannot read a book when travelling as I quickly get motion sickness.
