Bought a G100 212 some weeks ago. The cleans are really good. It takes pedals like a charm. I had a Fender Princton chorus once and the clean are similar. There is a high and a low input. In the low input and at low volume, I can use it without pissing off my neighbors. The metal parts of the knobs are likely to fell apart and finding exactly the same knobs new is impossible. Some replacement jazz amp knobs that are similar are available though. There is no fx loop on my version.
The version one was the first real guitar amp I ever owned. Great sound. Heavy as hell. Gave it to my daughters boyfriend to have when he started learning guitar. Once I hit 55 I switched to a Mustang III v 2, just to save my back from humping my shit to gigs.
This is one of the trippyst trips I've tripped. Radness.! Spectacular and steller. Thanks for the golden sound vibes. Gonna have to get one of these amps now and color the earth.
Just scored a first generation G100 115 for super cheap with one, massive 15w speaker in it, and I love it. Seriously, one of the best sounding amps I've ever played, highly recommend picking one up if you can find one, sounds exactly like a Twin Reverb with a Marshall-esque breakup on it when you crank the distortion. Incredible vintage amp for super cheap.
Version 2 and 3 sound more "husky" than Version 1. Version 1 has a sparkle the other two seem to lack (although @3:58 V2 does sound quite nice) Strat/Tele - Version 1 Version 2/3 might work "better" with Humbucker'd guitars. Also P-90's might give the V2/3 some needed cut. These amps are easy to find for sub-200 bucks which seems like a good deal. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the vid. Honestly, they all sounded good and had usable tones. I liked the first one best personally for my sound, but they all sound like keepers to me.
For any guy interested in these even after the price increase (I was able to get one for 280€ practically new, lucky me): The first version of the amp works great for single coils, but it starts sounding muddy on hotter single coils, p90 or humbucker. All in all it's not a versatile amp, but if you plug in a vintage tele or a jazzmaster prepare to be surprised. The second and especially the third versions are incredible and the most versatile BUT they messed with the eq, since they tried to market the amp to the jazz market (people treated this amp as a jazz chorus clone), the flat eq isn't everything on noon, decrease the bass to 2 and a bit of the treble to 4 and you should be set, there's also a mid boost pull in the volume on the third version which is very handy if your single coils still sound thin. Honestly I just plug a tube screamer and a jazzmaster in and that does it for me.
I have owned one of these amps for a few years Amongst others It's currently shrink wrapped up in my garage Where it's been for a while After watching this video I now know it's version 1 I have owned a silver face twin reverb The Yamaha version 1 is equally as good if not better. As I recall the Yamaha was cheap and I didn't know what I was buying but it looked retro so I bought it The sounds are awesome
I've had one of these for 30 years its a brilliant all rounder with buckets of depth and magnificent brightness (unrivaled) .....Simply they should have just stopped making amps after this because its near perfect! (except for the 8 stone weight). The only other amp I own is an old Fender Acoustasonic 30 which just pinches it for any acoustic stuff, this amp should be a couple of grand big win!
the Version II was deigned by the famous Paul Rivera of Riveria Amps that's why the version 212 II sounds really nice. Now its hard to buy these amps under 400.00 and thats for the 50 watt model.
I’ve got the first version of the G100B 212. I don’t really like it tbh, it’s harsh sounding but crazy loud. I’ve listed it on eBay for £260 and I’ve had a lot of interest. Some people obsess over these amps.
Just got the series 1 Yamaha Hundred 212 from Guitar Center for $149! Reverb was showing for $500+! I can not believe the tone. Watched several comparison videos with other brand tube amps and this was neck and neck. Just plugged in and could not stop smiling. This thing is beast! The clean tone and reverb are the highlight. Definitely can get those 'Mayer' tones with the right pedal setup. Im overjoyed with my purchase, and am happy these are still sleepers in the money category. Any comparable amp sound wise is gonna run you around $1000+.
Yeah I just picked up a g100 112 I think it's a version 2 end I'm doing the A B test between Shaw that is a hand wired head 30 Watts and my Paul Reed Smith Mt it's pretty impressive this cheap little amp
I have a series II that someone converted to a stand alone head 😂 Bought it for $135 at my local shop, I run it through 2 cerwin vega cabinets with 28” speakers. Playing a baritone Jackson guitar, I’m going to be adding a boost pedal to the gain channel to catch a little extra overdrive.
Terrific video! Never heard all 3 side by side before. The I or II is one of my favorite amps, period. The II sounds a shade warmer. Do you chalk that up to component variance?
Yamahas are under the radar for now, anyway. I was lookin for a portable amp i could pick up and take to practice and play at small to medium clubs. Not caring about ss vs tube, i tried a yamaha jx 30 and was blown away. Clean with a fender'esque reverb, and cranks! Paid 40 at a pawn- in 1988! Still works perfect.
I'm confused as G100 212 MK3 has aluminium voice coil covers and should produce more bright and crispy sound. I have used both MK2 and MK3 amps and they are great. I love yamaha amps and I have got JX50 and G50 112MK3 since 1981 and 1986 respectively. Both have slightly different sounds which is perhaps due to different yamaha stock speakers used in them. G series has better reverb as compared to JX50 due larger reverb tank in G series. I love both amps. JX is better built as it never became defective since last 43 years and G50 112MK3 over 38 years once its reverb became defective as well as speaker voice coil started to rattle.
Flat is not achieved with the tone controls at noon! I've studied the schematic on the G100II and the circuit is essentially a Fender/Western Electric circuit so "flat" is something like 2-10-4. All controls at noon gives significant bass and treble boost and mid scoop. That written, they're delightful sounding amps!
Flat is never achieved with the tone control at noon. "Flat" is achieved with the tone controls at zero. Same with EQ. At noon everything is at 50% boost. On most circuits. From my understanding. Am I right?
@@jas_bataille No. Most tone controls are passive / cut-only. So zero is everything maximum cut. What's truly flat though is subject to the design of the tone stack. Most amps have a mid-cut built in which is hard to erase.
@@jimistheman9732 I’ve run the mk3 directly through the head into a spectrum analyzer and you’re right, there’s a huge mid-cut at around 500hz, and the q is huge too. Pulling the volume pot and setting the eq to something like 2-5-4 gets rid of the ‘problem’ but at that point you gotta deal with the cabinet of your choice. I have a 2x10 combo version, doesn’t really need that kind of an eq really, the bass is already pretty tame, but the 2x12 version probably needs a little bit of tinkering.
@@jimistheman9732 try a fender Deluxe 85-has a mid boost and a gain channel boost. Plus so much eq and reverb you can get all kinds of sound I like mine
Well, this is a lovely video. Very nicely recorded, beautiful sets and sweet playing. I'm up in the frozen North looking at Yamaha amps and trying to decide which one to buy. This video is a great help. Obviously it don't much matter which amp ya pick, now do it? If'n' you can hear yous-elf real nice like, than the only thing left is - do you wanna hear it and how much? But maybe these are them desert amps that sound best in a dry climate. Maybe every amp sounds best in a dry climate.... Maybe everything is best in a dry climate! Miss you. Love.
The difference in sound is interesting. I have a version I and I recognize it’s tone instantly, very much has a sound even against other amps so closely related. Cool video!
I have an all original V1 and the rear panel looks wrong on yours? Mine has the reverb /distortion foot switch jacks but not the other two. I bought mine used for $100 back around 1983/84 all original and will never, ever part with it My S/N is 11603 Edit: so there were the "hunded212" and the hundredB212. I have the latter. The difference seems to be integrated bass, and the B212 only has the reverb and distortion built in. If anyone has more info on this, it would be great to know
a couple years ago I found a G50 112 ii that had been converted to head sitting on a couch at Goodwill for $25. Dirty pots and missing a reverb tank. Brought it home, it sounds glorious. I didn't need another combo, so being a head was bonus to me.
I have one of these, and have had it since the early 90s. I am confused as to which one I have. It has an early serial number in the early 4000s, but it has one massive speaker (4ohms) and that speaker is made in Yorkshire. Unfortunately, the spring reverb is not functioning due to failed transformer. Although, my model has reverb send and return. It's odd, as I can't find another model with one massive speaker. To say it is meaty and crunchy is an understatement. I can hardly stop the ear bleeding at a low volume. Love this amp but am confused by it's era. Seems to be version 1 but a tad different.
there were a few versions of these. Most seem to have 12" speakers but there are also the 15" versions so you must have a 115, they did also make 412 versions, not sure about the logistics of doing so as I don't know they first thing about electronics but they have massive cabinets so if the speaker on yours is huge maybe they wired in one huge speaker where there were 4 12s. I think the original speakers broke a lot on these because most of these amps on the market seem to have non original speakers the stock speakers are Yamaha Nippon Gakki branded, made in Japan. It is a v1 if it has tremolo, v2 if it has parametric EQ and v3 is easy to tell because they look way uglier than the 1 and 2
@@djtyser-czvt tell me about it I picked up a g100 112 mk 2 recently and man it is so good. Never understood what people meant when they talked about an amp being a good pedal platform before I got this but now I completely understand.
I own 1 and 3 and for sure 1 is great clean and for vintage gain, but for music that requires low end and scoop lol Doom, death metal, grind, crust etc go for 3 👍
I've got a version 1 that I've had for close to a decade that I've abused. And it still sounds amazing! It is also still heavy as f*ck! It says put, though. I also have g100-112 if I need a portable amp.
Folks, I have the g100 112 and have an issue I'm not sure how to fix. It has this low level hum that will not dial out. It is even present with nothing plugged into the amp. It is noticeable mostly in a quiet environment, and when I'm playing my guitar I do not hear it in any environment. Still, it is obvious and quite annoying at times, and being that I know it is not normal I'm concerned. Anyone know what can cause this?
If anybody wants one of these I'm selling version 1 on reverb.com because of a hand injury I have which makes playing guitar extremely difficult. You can get in touch with me on here.
Re-learn left handed. It worked for me after having my index finger amputated on my left hand.Stick with it.Acoustic is well worth the effort, pays dividends on electric.
300$ is a regular price for this amp, it's a bit far from nothing to me... wich other solid state amp keep this value? except the JC120 we all know it, after that it does'nt make this amp bad :-)
Bought the G-100 212II back in 1979 when I was 18 years old. Sales person convinced me it was the best thing since sliced bread and talked me out of purchasing a Marshall stack tube amp,... big mistake. Wish I had known more about amps at that time. My naivety about solid state amps versus tube amps and shady sales pitches was a lesson learned. I still have the amp and it has sat in my recording studio un-used for years. However, recently I fired it up decided to see how it would respond with some time based and modulation effects. The verdict is,... it sounds surprisingly good.I have been experimenting using it with a stereo amp set-up. It does have a use in certain applications. Think David Gilmour and how he starts with the cleanest pristine signal he can muster up and then adds his effects to the signal chain,... 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' type of tones.
