Does anyone remember The Year Jeremy McGrath Rode A Suzuki? After some issues with team Honda in the weeks leading up to the 1997 Supercross season McGrath decided to part ways with Honda and start a new chapter of his racing career. With less than a week from the opening round of Supercross Jeremy joined Factory Suzuki led by Rodger DeCoster as he looked to win yet another Supercross Championship, and regain his Pro Motocross Champion. How did his year on Suzuki pan out? Find out for yourself! Other riders include Jeff Emig, Mike LaRocco, Ryan Hughes, Larry Ward, Ezra Lusk, John Dowd, Greg Albertyn, Damon Bradshaw, and much more! #JeremyMcgrath #Supercross #Motocross

@@Davido50 4-stroke may put the power to the ground better,--but they are killing the sport with a 10 plus grand price tag. That is what happens when we let government/epa tell us what to do. Suzuki, the first jap bike in MX, will stop making MX bikes soon. More will follow. Yamaha and KTM will last, because they play the economic fascism the best. That was before the FIM invaded USA shores, and made our tracks redundant and easy. Red Bud, (for example), used to scare the hell out of me when I raced it in the 80's and early 90's. Today,---it looks like a fun vet track. Of course we are all the same speed now. Of course,---nobody can be great. The FIM has hated our talent since 1981, and we were stupid enough to let them run our racing. The 2-strokes do take more talent to go fast on too. I will never agree with economic fascism, (the EPA forcing the 4-stroke on the industry, and killing it with high prices), so after 20 years of not riding (58 years old now), I picked up a 250cc 2-stroke to ride again. The damn thing is 4-stroke too tall. The sport and the world--is going commie insane. We can't figure shit out anymore. Makes me sick.

Bradshaw, even though he did not win a big bike championship, (even with the most wins), that guy was spectacular to watch. It was like he did not care what the next section was, he had it wicked open. The closest I remember him from was Red Bud, when they still had the "double double" in the infield. I was standing next to it when Damon went to test it on his 125, (on that bike, he won championships). I guess he wanted to test it to see what it felt like if he came up real short on the send double, and he landed on the face of it. He just bounced over the top and kept going,---but I had never felt the ground shake as it did that instant, (when he landed on the face), before or after at any MX race. I am amazed he did not break his ankles.

17:04. There is the shot of the end of free market bikes, (now we make and buy what the EPA wants us to make an buy.), which caused bikes to almost triple in price again, (the first time was 5 years after the 1986 production rule, triple the cost), and help kill the market share of the sport. Did you know the FIM can no longer fill a 40 rider gate for the world GP's? Usually about 10 gates empty. Yea,--we let them run our racing. Stupid huh?

The fact that he ended up 2nd despite the drama, such a bad bike and all the bad luck during that season shows how he could have won the 97 title with a normal pro bike (not even talking about Honda's bikes), the King could have won 8 straight titles (and more MX titles too, surely 4 straight from 95 to 99). Also we just learned he rode his entire career with an injured ACL, imagine a healthy MC with a hard tranning program, he would have won vs RC way in 02 nd 03, MC's that talented he won while partying and work just hard enough to dominate his opponents for nearly 1 decade. It says that he was a typical California "Fair Weather" rider that had trouble with anything but a perfectly manicured track and 70 degree (about 20 C) weather. You know, the "Soft" California riders, that grew up eating Soy Milk and always being rewarded for their average at best efforts with beautiful Participation Trophies, found MX both Mentally and Physically challenging. They get heavy playing Video Games all day, and the Soy Protein has high levels of Estrogen. Shouda, Wouda, Couda.... (IMO) So considering JMc finished 2nd that year tells me if he had more prep and seat time before the start of the season he'd won another title that year. Not to mention the mechanical mishaps like a flat tire and the team not meshing etc. Jmc could win on the worst or slowest bike on the gate if he was comfortable with the bike. He was that good! Emig won the SX title by 15 points over JMc. And Ezra Lusk finished 27 points back in 3rd. So consider those -27 points back on a Honda that people considered superior over the '97 Suzuki of Jmc's. Not to take anything away from Jeffro. Emig had it all that year. A dialed in bike, happy team, and the obvious speed! To go back in time and giving an equal bike & team and then erase some bad luck ... who knows what would have happened?! I think I do! But that's racing for you!

What was the Year MC broke his handlebars off after dropping his bike in a corner at Pontiac Silverdome? I was there, but can never find that race. He must have been on the Yamaha. This year? don't blame the bike, (That Roger worked on. That guy can make a coffee table smooth a SX/MX track.). Jeremy could not get together this year. He did not like the new frame Honda, (in fact, he rode the 93 frame for his entire Honda ride), so he seems like the kind of guy who once he finds a rhythm, can not adjust as good as possible to a new bike. He did not have real stiff competition, (save Emig) from here until RC either. I don't think the recently retired guys; Rick Johnson, Stanton, Ward, Lechien, Glover, Bailey, JMB, Bradshaw and, (Did I miss any recently retired champions?), would have let him win all those races. But I am not sure even those guys would have taken a outdoor national championship away from RC.

Yeah, this was terrible for McGrath. It didn't help that Roger Decoster was riding McGrath hard saying he was dedicated enough, etc. Decoster thought the bike was perfect and the rider was the issue. Nevermind that Suzuki hadn't been a competitive MX/SC bike in years. McGrath complained that the bike had zero bottom end power and he came up short on a lot of sections he could have cleared with ease. This was the beginning of the end for McGrath. I think it destroyed his love for riding for a while. He was very upset about this season.

Of these 250 class years the Suzuki and the Honda are the most sought after.

Emig wore the all black gear at the first national heat in Florida, to show the other riders he could handle the heat in the sun.

Seems like Jeff Emig and team green won almost every race, was it because of the bike or the rider was just too good

MC was terrible that year. If it was not the 1993 Honda frame, (which he rode his entire Honda career), that he was so used to, he could not adapt like a normal racer. Not in 2 weeks before the series starts of course either. Roger DeCoster, (who worked for Suzuki at the time), has a entire career about making bikes, and riders, winners. MC was terrible this year. From Suzuki (in the 70's) to KTM today, Roger Decoster make them all great when he touched them. I think he knows this sport better than anybody in the world,---and he should run MX/SX for the AMA, (with full control, no FIM influence),---if we want this sport to be great again.

I can't believe Pings story about Decoster chasing a woman and McGrath's mechanic had a throttle cable that was too short to fully open. I have McGrath's interview about the Suzuki compared to Honda engrained in memory.

A short cable would not let the slide close all the way. The cable must have been adjusted too long, and you could not tell because the throttle barrel would hit its stop, and a long cable would not open the slide all the way. To me---that is a terrible mechanic. I would not have missed that as a kid working on my bikes. I never head anything about DeCoster chasing some woman, (or what that means), and I have heard probably every word of that show.

DeCoster did have to chase Lechien a couple times though. :)

Hopefully Honda fired the team manager after losing McGrath. Who was it that year, not Stanton I hope?

That RM 250 did not cost MC his title. It was several crashes by MC, a flat tire, Steve Lamson, as well as Jeff Emig pulling holeshots all year that cost him.
