I did nearly the same thing. Last year I’d tell people I’m nearly 40 the whole year I was 39. I thought of 40 as a huge milestone as if it’s when I might actually be adultish. I love being 40 I am kinda sad to be leaving it and turning 41 this year.
I went to high school with a dude that pretended to have a really obnoxious beetles-esque british accent for ALL FOUR YEARS of high school. I have never actually heard this guy's actual voice. I interacted with him on a near daily basis for a full 3 years, and I have no idea what his actual accent sounds like. I know the British thing was fake, because people that have known him much longer than I have told me it was. they also told me that he only does this British thing at school. He talks in his normal accent outside of school. He's never even been to the UK, much less grew up there. It was just a stupid bit that he stuck to for a solid 4 years.
Hank: "I'm old now! 40 is OK!" Also Hank: *sings song about buttholes* I think... I think I'm good for the day. And don't feel so bad about turning 36 in a few months.

When I was 28, there was a time I was waiting for a train and talking with some of my co-workers who were a few years younger than me. I let slip out that I was 28, and my friend Kristin went "oh, wow, so you're like, almost 30 then?" And at that moment I had a panic attack at the epiphany that I was turning 30. 2 years later when I finally turned 30, a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. I wasn't turning 30, but I was now 30. Nothing was different. Everything was different.

I started telling people I was 40 when I was 36, so that people would say “wow, you look great for 40!” Now I actually am 40, and no one thinks I look great anymore. I’m trying not to let it get me down.

I've been doing the "calling myself older" thing a couple of years before every milestone birthday starting before my 30th. It really works to ease the shock of each decade change, and it's still working after ? years!

When Hank said "I wrote a song" I was really excited. Then I realized what song it was. Hank, you got me good you big goof. I would pay top dollar to buy a new album.
I totally did that (pre- new- "zero" birthday, started saying I was that older age long before the birthday.... (e.g. Before 30, before 40, 50, etc....) It really took the edge off the shock of the birthday. When I was juuust 29 and saying I was 30... people saying for 6-8 months, "REALLY! Wow! You don't look 30 at all! I would have guessed, I don't know,...28, maybe even 27...." felt so good.) Really made the accepting 30 or 40 when it actually came, soooo much easier. (maybe not healthy I suppose, but it really helped me) PS- Hank, you have accomplished SO much more than I have at 50, you have nothing to be ashamed about! Age brings temperance and wisdom (it is really true!), so here is looking forward to 50 year-old Hank. I look forward to your Gandalf level of knowledge that you choose to share with us mortals.....
Thank you Hank, I am about a month younger than you, so 40 is forthcoming for me too! This is such a positive message for us 80's babies. I don't know if this was a thing where you lived when you were a kid, but when anyone turned 40 back in the 80s it always seemed like the birthday person was resigned to the "HERE COMES DEATH" Birthday. I saw so many black balloons, cakes with tombstones with RIP written in frosting, a true doomsday message for the recipient. It doesn't feel like that for us Xennials. The message has changed for us. I hope it stays positive for Orin and my 3 yo niece's generation.

To respond to what you said in the end, it is so amazing how doing stuff for others can take us out of this time and give some joy. Planning for my mom's birthday and mother's day has been such a nice break from everything.
I did the same thing! When I turned 29 I started saying “I’m almost 30” which gave me a year to get used to turning 30. I’m 30 now and I’m not a big fan, but at least I knew it was coming.
There is something about the way Hank said “making a singamajig is next level” that reminds me so strongly of my younger brother, it makes me laugh every time I rewatch it

I am right there with you Hank! 40 knocked me right out of my socks. I usually starting saying I am the next year up about 2 months before my B-Day so I can get used to it. But I feel like I need a much longer lead up to 50 so I've started saying it now, many months in advance, so hopefully I'll be used to it by the time I get there.

Too did that, not for 2 years, but for the year leading up to my 40th, I just started saying I was 40 to get used to it..and when it came and passed I had no huge emotional moment about it as it was quite normalized by then. I think that's the way to gracefully accept the inevitability of aging.
As someone who will turn 40 in July, I can honestly say that nothing about it feels any different. I had cancer at 17, so every day I get is another day I'm happy to have gotten. Therefore, even though some might think it's inappropriate for a woman to b asked (or tell the truth about) her age, I am proud to be almost 40! It means I've gotten 23 years I wasn't sure I'd have! While I hope that the quarantine is over before my birthday, just because I miss being able to do my job as a dog walker, I will still probably be spending my birthday alone. Because that's just what happens in my life...

That’s what I do too. I start saying the next age really early. It drives my mom crazy, she says I should go the other way. But this makes birthdays hurt less.
