Peter gives a progress report on the forge and bellows in his 1800's log cabin blacksmith shop. He foreshadows the next episode of tanning deer and buffalo hides, then retreats indoors on this miserable rainy day to open a package from Nick Skinner, (blacksmith and knife maker) and tell the story of Chief Logan and the Yellow Creek Massacre.

I figured correctly Peter! We are about the same age and have many things in common, Kathy too. I wondered for a while, I wonder if Peter plays guitar and a Taylor no less, which I have as well. A great song done well and I Thank You! I want to tell you a true story my Mentor experienced. John Groff was born 1889 and died 1981. He was a cabinetmaker, blacksmith, shoemaker and rug weaver. After high school his family wanted him to get an office job but John was a craftsman. So he took a train to Chicago that took 3 days and 2 nights. For 10 years he had a number of job in car factories and made the largest red wool rug by hand that was 12’x80’ and all by hand including making two 11/2’ extensions for his bosses loom. During this time period he was staying at a boarding house in Michigan. An old woman ran the boarding house while her sons ran the farm. She and her husband homesteaded years before and he’d passed years before. While sitting on the high porch after dinner, smoking cigars and talking with everyone the woman’s son said he and his brother where going to cut down that old dead oak tree for cook stove wood. The old Mother said, as long as I’m alive that tree stands. Her son said but it’s dead and we can use the wood. She said, when your father and I started this farm it was late in the season and we harvested little from our garden. We had little meat, not much food. It turned out to be the worst winter ever and we feared we’d starve to death. One morning we woke up and were surprised to see two Buffalo hanging on that very tree that our Indian neighbors have hung there for us. It saved our lives. So yes, that old oak tree stands as long as I do. Those savage Indians, eh? This came to me through my Mentor who experienced this first hand and I Dearly Love this story. A story about an amazing culture that live with Mother Earth in humble respect. We both are very aware of this Peter. I had to tell you this story. It is one I tell often about the so called savage Stone Age Indigenous People. They certainly got the wrong end of the stick and a deadly one indeed! But I’ve learned so much Peace and Dignity from them in spite of everything. This in itself is a lesson for all. Thanks Again to You and Kathy for all your sharing as well. Your deep respect for our Mother Earth and her Children comes through respectfully well! Many Blessings with Love, Light, Peace and Joy of Being! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Very much enjoyed the song and the story. From what I have read there was reasoning behind the butcher of Logans family. As long as there was peace there was no excuse for the taking ofland. But for the greed of speculators, among them the royal governor who sought an excuse for a war, there would probably have been continued peace. As usual the innocents on both sides paid for the greed of a few. Good job, Peter. Thank you.
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape Год назад
Your suggestion certain makes a lot of sense, Larry. Hard to fathom the greed that would push a handful of rich men to such depths.
@larryreese6146
@larryreese6146 Год назад
@@TheWoodlandEscape your videos mean a lot to me, Peter. I look forward to every one of them. Yes, the greed and the lengths men will go is hard to fathom. But it's nothing new and is still going on today in many places all over the world. It seems hard to build brotherhood and tolerance. Much easier to create dissension and feed the prejudice that is already there. It is easier to kill or subjugate or steal from people whom we think lesser than ourselves and therefore unworthy. All they have to do is be a little different, whether that be race, religion, or even have a little different perspective. But the main reason is that they have something we want. Ignorance and callousness will take over from there.

The agitation about fulfilling a Treaty Obligation, and appointing a Cherokee Delegate to the U.S. House Of Representatives, becomes a lot easier to understand why there is such resistance to the notion. Boy, what a great episode! I really enjoyed the tale of Logan and Logan"s lament. The American government has never dealt honorably with the Native American nations. I can't comment on the Canadian government, but I suspect it wasn't too far off from the US's. I'm really looking forward to what you have to say about Tecumseh. On a totally different front, I like your fancy clothes. You look good in them to my eye.

I loose a lot of metal things which is why I have a metal detector. The things that really cause me problems are the E clips on my Stihl chainsaws that hold the sprocket on. I have learned to get a box of assorted size E clips in MM sizes. This is better than trying to find that little sucker in the grass and leaves in my yard or on my back deck with all of its metal deck screws. However the detector has found larger metal things that I have lost in the yard. If you know where you went it should be able to find a fixed blade knife, pretty easily. I know it could find my Case fixed blade or my Kabar.😊

I grew up playing at Fort St. Clair. I wish I had known more about the history of the Ohio Country back then. But that period was very generic and sanitized in school. I learned more reading Eckert many years later than I did in school.

Although Eckert is a novelist, his books are very accurate historically. I do believe we have improved how history is thought today, because it was pretty awful back then. Thanks for watching.

G'Day, Thanks for passing on this piece of American history and the music. Music is an important part of any country or culture. My wife and I often played music at reenactments or living history---anything from medieval through to 18th century and American Civil War. My wife, the more talented half of our duo, plays guitar, banjo, lute, zither and just about anything that has strings! I play bodhran, either Celtic style or lap frame drum style. Also have other styles of hand drums and percussion items as well as a shamanic "buffalo" drum. The skin is artificial but the sound is creates is magnificent. We still do music with friends although not as often over the last three years of on/off Covid restrictions. Hoping that the lunacy ends!. I look forward to watching more of your videos and learning from them. Cheers, Steve PS My name is Steve---Uncle Arthur is a favourite of mine Australian comedy character!

Well. This song hit close to home for me. Growing up I heard whispered things about the yellow creek massacre, but details were always thin. As is the Wikipedia page. Who is there to mourn? I am. I hope that there is some healing knowing that the descendants of those that carried out such a horrible act carry a deep sorrow for what happened. Thank you for this painful lesson of family history. -Paul Greathouse

Congratulations! Three Whitetail in the meat locker is a good blessing. I'm looking forward to your presentation on the tanning process. We here in Colorado just remembered the Sand Creek Massacre (29 November 1864). It was a horrific slaughter. Colonel John Chivington was directed terriorial Governor, John Evans, to "subdue" the combined Arapahoe and Cheyenne camped on Sand Creek in S. E. Colorado. Chivington attacked and destroyed a village of Cheyenne and Arapaho people in southeastern Colorado Territory, killing and mutilating an estimated 69 to over 600 Native American people. Chivington claimed 500 to 600 warriors were killed. However, most sources estimate around 150 people were killed, about two-thirds of whom were women and children.

The story of Chief Logan's life is interesting, so is his father's Chief Shikellamy. I live in Central Pennsylvania near the site of where the Indian village called Shikellamy Town once stood along the Susquehanna River. One of our school districts is named after Chief Shikellamy, they are called the Shikellamy Braves. Last year I went to a seminar given by a professor who studied Chief Shikellamy for thirty years, right off the back he said something that made us give him a deer in the headlights look. The professor said Chief Shikellamy wasn't of Indian blood, he was French, he was captured in Canada as a child by the Oneida Indians. Pretty impressive to work your way up from captive to being a chief, I guess it would be safe to say Chief Shikellamy was no dummy.

WHAT a 'kind and generous' friend U have in; Nick Skinner! I am sure by his gesture, several will engage his talents. With a name like; 'Skinner', too bad he doesn't live closer, sounds like the perfect one 2 help with those hides! LOL! You're the only man I know Peter, who can say; 'I'll tan your hide." with a smile. Yes, indeed, 'the white man' has MANY reasons to hang his head. The 'decisions' of a few key people in history,, results in the shaming of a nation. I wonder if you can call it 'revenge' when a man has been hurt beyond reason. Thank-you most kindly 4 this most interesting vid. Health and God Bless! P.S. I enjoy your playing Peter, but can U play us a 'happy one' sometime? :)

@@TheWoodlandEscape AHh then, we'll have 2 wait 4 a writer 2 send a 'jovial' one 2 U! I DO wish 2 clarify my first remarks. I have no qualms about 'revenge'. Revenge is the Good Lord's. However, if a man 'robs a bank' and was driven by 'others', given a weapon 'by others' and threatened to perform 'by others'. The 'others' are culpable of the crime, and the 'doer' needs aid(s) to heal. Chief Login was driven to the point of insanity and so acted out. Justified? Never. But many were to blame for his 'reactions'. We await your next adventure. P.S. Well Done Catherine, on the shoot.
