my father was a guitarist and music director, his friend asked him to work with him in Japan to play in the bars and make lots of money. He refused the offer and stayed with us in the Philippines. We we were so poor, yet he chose to give us a complete family. All 5 of us his children are now professionals. I grew up poor but my heart was full of love and care from my parents, no money could buy that. I love my parent's decision to stay with us growing up. Each child needs a nurturing mother and the love of a father.

It depends how poor you are. Sometimes there is no other solution. But I applaud the decision your father made, as many times people would forsake a perfectly normal life for a bit more money, not knowing how much that affects their relatives.

I used to walk 1 hour to school in Sichuan province. My parents were working in Hongkong and I see them once every 3 years because plane tickets used to cost 2 months of their pay. Eventually, they were very successful in their business, and you could say that our family became wealthy. They came back and grabbed my grandmother and me from our village and paid 800k USD to immigrate to Canada. When I landed I was 12 years old and spoke 0 English, and adapting was very difficult. I also had a horrible relationship with my parents, because they were like strangers to me. Even though we live in a multi-million dollar house now, I still feel like the trade-off of leaving your kids to pursue higher income is not worth it. I constantly feel that if they wanted to make money, why have kids so early, why not have me when we migrated to Canada. However, as I grow older and begin to watch videos about Africa, North Korea, and other countries where people are suffering, I realize that despite all I felt in the past, it is nothing compared to what others are going through in the world.

@@melindasmith3713 Do you know about China's forced abortion policies of a couple decades ago? Obviously not. There's a new documentary out about it: "One Child Nation." I've seen bits of it; utterly shocking. One consequence: girl babies left out on the street to be collected by government run adoption mills, who then sell these infants to western adoption agencies for $10,000 per, with the Chinese government taking a cut. Juju Rellama it not like all of the left children's parents wants to be parents or have a lot children. Except a few countries there is not much sex education, and even in the ones who have sex ed teen pregnancies and stds are really high. It’s hard to educate people about safe sex. Another topic is countries think a lot of children means more work force or soldier for future. So having birth control is harder in some countries. Im not from china but to give an example ,in my country, buying birth control methods are really expensive, an average pack of condom or birth control pill coasting around 1/40 of average sallary. And people doesnt know about them a lot either. Like i made my friends start to bcp ,they didnt know about them and they’re not uneducated people btw. They’re studying in good universities & their parents are also well educated, yet they didnt know about bcps. So i dont think the case in here is that they’re popping out babies even tho they know they cant afford to raise them...

I don´t like to say it, but unfortunately it´s exploitative societies who give a damn about humans, their lives, their feelings and their struggles. They care only about cold cash. The only kind of intelligence they consider being worth something is " - The smart one cheats the not so smart one!" To them human life is no more than working hours spent on enriching them. Life in numbers. It´s too sad that the world has become like this in such a degree. One could ask the question, that if it´s allright to use the brain as a weapon to cheat others to gain all the advantages for oneself, is it then so strange that people rebel by using their fists as weapons. If the use of fists as weapons or anything else is violence and punishable by law then what shall we do with the use of the brain as a weapon? Isn´t that just a more subtle kind of violence against your fellow/brother human?

@Immortici Italiano [Mussolini did nothing wrong] Survive first, happiness later, that's Chinese traditional philosophy. You are not in that place, you just don't experience the desire for material satisfaction. I was one of those children. Only at the national festival(like Chinese New Year, Moon Cake mid-autumn), we had the chance to eat meat. My parents had to borrow money and pay my high school tuition and I took a loan to pay to the college tuition fees. China is still a developing country, most people live in the countryside bearly meet their ends 10 years ago. Our parents don't work in the cities for themselves, but for the survival of the whole family. It's a necessary trade-off of the earlier headship for a better future. My parents had to work in cities to support my brother and myself 20 years ago. Now, my parents return to live in the village. And it's our turn to work in the city and support them. We (My brother and myself) send 10,000USD, which is the amount of triple local annual income, to them each year now, so they can live a leisure life now. China is still 20-30 years behind the west developed countries. To make emotional health a major concern other than material satisfaction, it is still a long way for ordinary Chinese to go.

This is my hometown. Xiangxi. Tell me what I think. There are several documentaries of the same type about left behind children. This one is relatively good. Why? At least show some kindness and concern. We are all mountainous areas, very backward, where bandits used to live. But these years have been developing rapidly. After my master's degree, I taught in a junior high school. The worst learners, the worst psychological quality, and the last to learn are almost all left behind children. China must face the primitive accumulation and sacrifice them as a result. But at least there is hope for the whole country, because I feel that my hometown is much better than before. I like my hometown and will not envy those developed countries because we have hope for the future.

Rural communities know that if you harvest the crop and put no goodness back into the soil, the land becomes a desert ! I have stayed inChina about six weeks, and my son works there as a nursery school teacher now for three years. He now speaks good mandarin. I met young women from rural communities in hostels in Beijing and elsewhere. I am just beginning to grasp the consequences in rural communities thanks to these documentary films, which even if defective, at least open a window where fresh air and light may enter ! My parents both left school in their early teens with no qualifications. I was the first to stay on and eventually become educated from a very large working class family ! So I know a little from comparable transformations? The gain and the pain ! You have a critical mind and sound values and courage, that qualifies you beyond mere paper awards ! I am an experienced psychotherapist as well as a teacher. To be frank, I am horrified at the suffering of the left behind young in the rural areas of China ! As a mother too, it pains me. Your insights and critical comments are very relevant and needful ! Believe me there is maybe as much confusion, inter generational tensions and anxiety in so called developed countries ! Though it’s sources may be miles apart in the specifics of history ! There is not just hope but impressive human resources, of which you are one ! When anger and compassion link hands and speak truths that need to be heard, there is not mere hope, but resources that can bring about needful and humane change for the better ! In heartfelt appreciation, I thank you !

Eyes are so pure it's tells the story more than words. The grass is not greener on the other side. Why am I saying this I always wonder my history of migration as a Chinese looking people in India. I cried bucket watching this and as a psychiatric social worker as well the village and my village 20 years ago looks the same but not the situation.we extremely look the same to same living conditions but better mental environment. China is one child policy and even that child is emotionally mentally damaged I am afraid of those million children growing up as next generation feeling of hopelessness, resentment, wanted to be isolated. Even thinking of it, it breaks my heart. Mental is the most important aspect to function in all round development but that we all ignored the most of it. Lee young young I agree with u! Grass is not greener on the other side. Ask people who have a lot of money and materialistic things, what else they want in life. And everything they want, money can’t buy. Money and materialistic stuff is such a great thing to want, but it’s never enough and will never be enough. If one chases those things, they will chase til the day they die. Once a person has experienced a full materialistic life, only then they will see and realize that they should have spent their time with family, travel, and living a simple life. You will never have time again with your children growing up. It passes by in a flash, so does life.

Thinking of these children that were separated from their parents after neighbourhoods in Beijing were demolished, migrant workers coming from far away villages thrown outside of from their home, children who went to illegal school for migrant workers who were separated from their parents after the schools scattered across the city were demolished so that the capital could become cleaner and more attractive. Forcing these children to return to the countryside to their grandparents so they could go to school again. China is truly becoming a competitive economy, an extreme capitalist society where the lower class must produce wealth so the wealthy clans can keep their appearance.

I was in China for a long time so I know this was a problem in their society. In fact I have close friends whose family were like that where parents work in a far away city and rarely have the chance to see their child. However I never see this as a big deal or I thought I understood that sometimes one must pay the sacrifices for their family, until I have child of my own. I cannot imaging not seeing my daughter growing up or how she would grow up without me, nor can I imagine how much it must hurt when I would get on the phone with my daughter and there were those awkward silent moments where we just realized that we don't really know how to talk to each other... I never realized that it is truly a blessing that my daughter would cry her eyes out when she learned that my wife or I would go on a business trip and won't be home for a couple of days.

After watching a few of these left at home videos I have concluded that Chinese children are extremely bright and sensitive. Just can't stop crying. My mother left to another country to work. Me and my siblings were used to being alone. My older sister and brother used to get the money mom would sent us. It was a nightmare. I would never leave my children because I live now in a different situation but that marked me. After she made the last sacrifice to save us from the place we were. She stayed 3 years with us. Then 23 years without seen her. She passed one day and I my hope to se her or hold her in my arms die with her. My mom was everything for me. Now after 3 years of mourning her my heart still broken beyond words or logic. I never want that to happen to anyone ever and seen this... Just brought me to tears. This world is horrible. My father never recognized us so we are now orphans. My depression and anxiety still lingering I started to work as a child also. It can be devastating to loose hope in such short age and being a teen never had time to play or act my age.. Now my in my late 40's my health is failing with an incurable condition... But I try my best to show my children of how much I love them. Every day. I don't want to die one day and never show my children they are loved and so special to me. This video is beyond sad and painfully real and familiar to me..

In Eastern cultures, the basic unit of society is the family, not the individual. People in these cultures are inculcated to have a family. It is an anomaly for one to decide to not have a family. Only your children can take care of you in your old age. Without family, you are no one.

These kids probably all have deep mental issues that unfortunately will never be resolved ( due to lack of options ). I feel very heart broken for the girl who was getting scolded by her grandma. That one girl were the grandmother was constantly yelling at her and calling her names must be so devastated that she just stays inside herself. It hurts much less that way. Her parents gave her up and has no love for her and neither does her grandmother. The grandmother just resents her and both seem to hate each other. Hope that it can be fixed. Since neither have the parents anymore they should lean on each other, instead of resenting each other. I feel very sorry for the little boy too. He is to young to understand what is happening but he wont be very different from his sister when he becomes a teenager. Both understand that they were unwanted by the parents and grandparents!

I have a nephew who his parents had came to Taiwan to seek out a better income for 8 years since he's just over 1 year old. His parents could barely afford the expend of a trip to visit him yearly, so they tried to make video call every day to make sure their son getting an idea how his parents is, trying to get updates and keep up their remote presence in the maturing process of their son while they're too far away. Luckily, he was granted the good caring and good education from his grandparents and relatives. Now they have reunited, had a better life, the son will surely have a better future. If these parents did this in my country, the authorities would arrest them for child abandonment and put them in jail. My family grew up in a very similar environment to these kids, in a small house where there were three and four to a bed, but my parents were always there for me. And because we were isolated and didn't have shops, it didn't matter to me that I only had two outfits and one pair of shoes that I only wore on Sundays. We were happy and I turned out okay. I don't understand what 10 years worth of saving could have bought for these children to make up for the absence of their parents.
