I love how they built the set so the contestants were actually stacked on top of each other because that was apparently a very common misconception when they showed the actual program like that on television at the time.
@@shmookins To be fair, you might have been primed to believe that if you’ve ever seen “Hollywood Squares”. Not only do they really stack them on that show, but some iterations of the set leave the stairs they use visible.
Actually it's a callback to earlier in the episode when they're on the train and reading a world record book and it actually says Rick did the stupidest bottom burp and he is fuming about it 😅
The way Mike says 'Relax we can handle this.... Vyvian!'... Implies that he knew all along that he was going to frag the other team, meaning that Mike had this all planned out.
Now Ade Edmondson is a serious actor but every time I see him in something I find myself waiting for him to say, "I'm completely bloody sick of this!" and stamp on someone's head.
a career of anarchy: Guest House Paradiso, the Young Ones, Bottom, Richie Rich and Catflap, a couple of episodes of The Comic Strip, plus Rik Mayall's part in 'Drop Dead Fred'
@AVIARYCOURT I think he wanted more of a balance with his credits... more serious in his later years... while rik post accident wanted more if the same.
Maybe the most brilliant, uproariously original skit in comedy history. I was fried on both sides the first time I ever saw this and I swear I became another person twice I laughed so hard.
@@leocannon4800 Fun fact: Fry recited this poem at Savile's funeral: "There was a young chaplain from King's Who talked about God and such things; But his real desire Was a boy in the choir With a bottom like jelly on springs."
I have the Young Ones DVD collection called EVERY STUPID EPISODE. My sister got it for me for Christmas about 7 years ago! She had to go online and search like crazy to find it but I'm so glad she did! We both love the Young Ones! We will still watch them to this very day!
This would come on Sunday nights late on MTV back in the early 80s I remember staying up watching these shows with my sisters didn't want to miss any episodes.🤔
My parents first showed this to me when I was in about 6th grade and anxious about playing in my first quiz bowl match the next day. It had me laughing so hard I nearly did a spit take with ice cream. Happy to say that I’ve returned to this as I’m packing for college :)
Bambi: And finally...And finally for 5 bonus points to take you into the lead, who's been tampering with my question cards? Rick: IT WAS ME! IT WAS ME! Damn! Damn! (Audience booing)
As an American I knew nothing about _University Challenge_ so I thought that the whole bit about the host being called 'Bambi' was just a bit of weirdness. It wasn't until over 20 years later that I learned about Bamber Gascoigne!
Used to watch the opening but where they dance stupidly so much. I’d play then rewind play then rewind. In the end I physically wiped the tape so that bit was just snow ha ha.
I loved this as a kid but as a 38 year old all the references are landing especially as a poor kid who made it to Cambridge and onto University challenge even more 😂😂 - and Hagrid dropping an eclair on them tops it off
My first exposure to Rik Mayall was watching The Young Ones on a Canadian channel called YTV at 3am in the mid-90s. I introduced it many of my friends who liked Drop Dead Fred, probably his only incursion into western film. He will always be Rik with a silent P. Scumbag University Forever.
