Like if you would be interested in an Anime Deck only side format, officially supported by Konami! I think it would much more closely resemble the anime themes that they like to market. But where would you draw the line? 🤔

I would draw the line at types and boss monsters/support because that's what I consider pure. Ideally they would all be one type but at the very least they should be related to the archetypes being used. In my favorite fun deck, Dark Magistus, there are only 5 cards in the core deck that are not Spellcaster and those 5 are related to (and basically necessary for) the two primary archetypes. My side deck would need fixing since it's meant to smokescreen into basically pure DM Fusion with a bunch of handtraps etc. but beyond that it would be fine. Probably the simplest rule to put in place to make that happen would be to specifically require those be true of the ED. No running Zeus unless you're slapping down a Jinzo deck or something, in other words. Could also require the main deck to not use cards from more than two archetypes unless they are the same type as the anime archetype if you really want to keep it relatively pure. Essentially, cards that the deck would feasibly use in a modern anime good, cards that they wouldn't bad. Yugi's deck may have been a bit of a mess, but if it were happening with the more modern series in mind, Atem isn't likely to plop Zeus on his Ebon Illusion. He probably would summon a Gagaga Magician to modify it's level to 7 and then XYZ into that Ebon Illusion with his Dark Magician to begin with though.

3:16 Thank you, this is exactly what's in my mind when I view cards like Accesscode Talker as a problematic card to the game. I always hate facing unique archetypes as my opponent and get excited for a match that am experiencing for the first time, only for their end board to be on an Accesscode. It really robs decks of their identity by everyone needing or requiring these generic Extra Deck staples to win. Love that you guys are always consistent in talking about this specific point at the topics you all choose. More players have to be aware that card designs like this are a problem. Keep being my current favorite Yugitubers yo!

I agree too many people just "deal" with it because it nets them wins yet they don't get that ironically stagnates the game. Which is what older players are trying to tell them. No game should be over an turn, the overreliance on staple cards especially the extra deck. Hand traps you MUST draw on the first turn.

I feel like you’re really touching on one problem I see with yugioh today. The craze for yugioh cards started with excitement from its anime/products. You saw the creatures from the show on your cards. I never got all the pieces of exodia but I knew kids who had them and it was cool because of what I heard in the show. Now they have to generate hype for the cards without really having a thriving show to present the lore and context of why these cards are cool.

After 25 years of the game, with it nowadays having so many cards, most of them being involved into archetypes instead of the "random dungeon crawling" monsters from the OG days; and some of the archetypes being part of a big branching storyline with the oldest example being Duel Terminal, it's wild to think Konami only pays attention to the anime aspect and keeps pumping stuff related to the first anime, like supports, action figures of Yugi, Kaiba, Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl, Blue Eyes; even millennium items' based toys... but rarely anything related to the rest of the game. The only small difference is OCG stories which is a manga covering the Sky Striker storyline; and even at that, that's only released in the OCG, not TCG. They could create so much more from the archetypes, like standalone games based on them, action figures (who says Dark Magician Girl has to be the only YGO waifu?); anime or movies; hell, some small shorts or OVAs would be fine. Then again, I guess they don't exploit their archetypes in this sense because that would imply they're hyping them for the potential buyers. And if they hyped the archetypes, it's because they plan on releasing new support for them that could make them either meta or more playable like how OCG stories is currently doing with Sky Stryker by implementing new support. And while I do understand why they don't do it, at the same time I find it dumb not to make their products more appealing beyond being a TCG game. Like, at least the older YGO video games tried to make the franchise slightly different from just a card game with Duelist of the Roses, Capsule Monsters, Falsebound Kingdome and Dungeon Dice Monsters. Konami is currently in enough of a good position with YGO to try their hands on more spin offs of the franchise... as long as they don't try to capitalize on the gacha format (Cross Duel) and fail miserably like anyone else using a popular IP like Jojo or Blazblue.

I def have more fun in Duel Links that I do with the TCG or Master Duels. Its not fun at all watching your opponent set up for like 20 mins with multiple crap. Duel Links is fast paced enough that you can still enjoy complex chained plays while not making you want to just quit instantly out of annoyance. The skills also add another dimension of play as the decks themselves are not the end all be all. A well timed skill can completely turn the match around. Honestly wish they marketed Duel Links more instead of Master Duel.

I genuinely think that one of the main problems with yugioh nowadays and part of why its so hard to get into is theres no meta narrative. Like as a comparison, whats a game of the pokemon tcg supposed to represent? Simple, a battle between trainers who each trained their team of monsters to fight each other. Whats MTG about? A duel between powerful wizards summoning creatures and casting spells theyve learned on their adventures through the multiverse. Now, whats yugioh about? .........who knows? Like yes we originally had the idea that it came from ancient Egyptian sorcerers battling like in the original anime, but that stopped really making sense ever since GX had a main character whos deck was mostly super heroes. Hell it kind of stopped making sense even in the original series just out of machine and sci-fi based cards existing. Like genuinely, if I summon a monster, what is that supposed to represent? What is the entire duel supposed to represent? What are "duelists" other than just people who play this game? Why can I play fallen of albaz, a character who has an entire kind of dark storyline separate from anything else, and act like its perfectly normal for him to be fighting against my opponent whos playing live twin, an archetype based around vtubers. I dont think they need an overarching plot like mtg does with its story, I just think it needs at least some kind of identity instead of seemingly being a card game about whatever the hell it decides to be about that week. I dont like that all they really advertise is the old yugioh either, but I kinda of dont blame them for doing so when if they started advertising the new stuff it would feel extremely random to people outside the main player base that they want to join in. I think a lot of people for the most part want ideas and concepts they can latch onto and understand in a short amount of time, and yugioh hasnt really had that almost since it began.

I think in some ways D-Hero Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer and Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon are kind of what you're implying at the beginning. Themed cards that are really pushed over generics. Personally I prescribe to the idea of generics being weaker vs pushed cards being stronger, exactly as you do, but I think in some ways this type of philosophy of making the pushed cards in theme is the direction you'd want to go if you wanted to make the nostalgic themes relevant. I think that, with more locks to themes, would help bridge the gap that nostalgia players find when they return.
@apsamplifier

I am still of the firm mindset that YGO's biggest problem is the lack of set rotation. YGO's greatest strength was its' thematic style/design, the archetype structures, and the idea of traps/set cards leading to psychological tactics and interactions. YGO's biggest weakness is the loss of actual traps/set cards (in favor of hyper speed hand traps and such), the invention of new archetypes constantly, and the power creep acceleration from lack of set rotation. If YGO stopped trying to make new archetypes constantly (and retained its' mystical monster styles a bit more instead of the sci-fi cyber-stuff they've been leaning into more with each anime series), they could use set rotations to make new archetypes for the famous YGO monsters and stuff. Imagine Dark Magician and Blue Eyes having different archetypes/styles every set, that feels like Dark Magician or Blue Eyes but also new/refreshing. Konami is great at coming up with new playstyle ideas yet they don't invest that into iconic and marketable cards. They invest it into cards that new or casual players don't know and can't identify with. It's like if Pokemon stopped using Pikachu and Eevee as a mascot in Gen 2 and started using Pikachu clones as the mascot with each generation. It doesn't invoke the same power or feel.
@madwheelsgaming2360
@madwheelsgaming2360 Год назад
The ban list is the rotation list. It’s literally impossible to do a set based rotation because of the yugioh is designed. You’d have some decks lose all but like 3 cards and some decks would be at full power. How’s that fair?
@Hurricane1990
@Hurricane1990 Год назад
The could have rotated based on the anime. As soon as the GX set came out then the DM would be rotated and so on. But they didn’t so the format rotates after each set is dropped and a ban list
@Pravanul
@Pravanul Год назад
@@nmr7203 It's not really the same thing. The difference is card bloat and power creep. When you have thousands to 10's of thousands of cards, you'd have to ban large segments of them to get to the same level as set rotation. At which point, incorporating set rotations is easier for new/casual people to understand. With 1000's to 10000's cards to choose from, people experience either choice paralysis, too many cards to remember/learn, and either unseen broken combos (which will only exponentially increase in frequency as more cards get added) or... in YGO's specific case... extreme power creep. YGO makes most older cards completely worthless, which is effectively a set rotation, by making new card sets vastly stronger. But power creep only helps Spike oriented players because only Spikes are competitive enough to invest that amount of time to play with the expanded mechanics/rules that comes with power creep. Set rotation allows card games to reset the power level softly each set and minimize power creep. Even allowing you to creep backwards. You can't do that without set rotation. " they just need to learn to design cards better." - It will never happen. If they designed cards better (better balanced), people won't be as incentivized to buy new cards. Once they make a Tier 1 or Tier 0 deck, why would they buy entire new sets? Maybe they'll purchase a new deck if the idea appeals to them, but the amount of cards being bought would drop substantially. Konami incentivizes players to buy into new cards by making them stronger. They'll never be better designed.
@madwheelsgaming2360
@madwheelsgaming2360 Год назад
@@Pravanul you don’t think they’ve released weaker sets on purpose for the exact reasons you mentioned. Shadow Specters was one of the weakest sets of all time and they used a ban list to force us to play cards from it. That’s exactly what rotation is. Set rotation is not the only way to do rotation. As someone else mentioned they could’ve done an era based rotation when the GX anime hit they could have banned the DMs cards from the DM would only become legal once released in a gx era product in that case but they chose the overall ban list route. The point is yugioh does have rotation in it’s own form. The format they use works much better for the way yugioh is designed by the way. Johnny and Timmy should get jobs so they can have disposable income like spike does then they can play yugioh. There are plenty of budget options. Traptrix costs $30 In it’s most basic form and can win you local tournaments you can sell your winnings( cards from from packs) for cash or use them to improve your collection as a new player. You are making an argument about something that will literally never change.

I leave powerful, generic, boss monsters to people who play in tourneys. I play a casual, modified-traditional format with friends where we all play iconic monster decks. My Blue-Eyes deck aims to use modern support to actually be able to play Shining Dragon, Dragon Master Knight or any other BE boss monster. I find the competitive side intimidating and stifling to deck variety. I would fully support an alternate, official format where players can try to make their Dark Sage deck viable. It's difficult to draw the line on what should/shouldn't be allowed, but I think players should be allowed to use any cards, so long as the aim of the deck is to duel with a focus on iconic monster archetypes and bosses. I have to admit, playing something like Shining Dragon using only cards of the time is not great, but using a mix of modern archetype support, and old, powerful staples actually makes niche, anime monsters playable. Also, Pot of Greed should be required in every deck, just like it was in every anime duel lol

local card shop actually runs anime deck format, but the decks are put together by the shop and people that made them and gave them to the shop. When the tournament starts you roll for a deck and everyone is given one based on the roll. It's fun that they have this thing going, but it's very restrictive in a way because you can only run the decks the cardshop runs. You can't make your own anime deck and bring it to the tournament because konami never made any specific rules for the anime format so it's completely up to the shop

Advertisements aren't for existing audiences, they for luring in new audiences (or back old audiences). If people that see these commercials invest in their product at all, then the advertisements are successful. And they do, and are. The core issue isn't that the advertisements aren't representative of the game, but that the game can't be representative of the advertisement because such decks aren't viable. To which, the best solution, as usual, is more formats.

Promoting decks stories with short is not enough to connect people with them. Its also possible to be irrelevant in a year or so. Black wings was viable at one point, now its not. Yugioh needed a set rotation, like 15 years ago. They could've kept some version of classic decks at a tier 1 or 2 status with good management. But I think its a little late for that. At this point Rush Duel is probably the future of the game. Although I suspect they will repeat the power creep mistake with that game and need another reboot in a decade.

In regards to the anime and being a finite number of people being interested in older archetype players that is definitely nonsense. Anyone can watch them at any time. It will never really make sense to make such a claim but at the very least you have to wait another quarter century to say that. Kids tend to see what their parents enjoyed. This generation will have likely been just as exposed to Dark Magician as anyone 20 years ago. It will only REALLY drop off when you're talking about grandparents but even then you don't magically have people never interact with and enjoy things again just because it's from the past. Especially not when it does keep being pushed. Star Wars is going on 50. Star Trek? 60. Lord of the Rings? 70. Frankenstein? 110. People like these things to date. Even despite the tragic nonsense the first 3 have often gotten up to because insane virtue signalling consoomers are in control of the culture post 2010. Your perception that no one new likes it is demonstrably illogical. Possible but INCREDIBLY unlikely. You're right that they should embrace others (GIVE ME MY TURN BASED JRPG BASED ON THE MAGISTUS ARCHETYPES KOMONEY) but I hope you can see why your justification for it here is nonsense. The real reason is simply because different people like different things (old or new) so if you want to sell to as many of them as possible then you want to put as many different aspects in as many different faces as possible.

I agree 100% with this video. I've always wondered why the marketing always goes back to the DM era, but whenever any of those archetypes (aka, blue eys, dark magician, the Egyptian Gods, etc) they always get support that just doesn't do enough for them to compete in the current advanced card game. It would be great if Konami can shift focus on those older archetypes and give them relatively good support to help push the envelope a bit. My thing with YGO is, that there are wayyyy too many archetypes in the game. So some of these older archetypes just don't get the same level of support they ought to get
@ExeErdna

We don't need more DM archetype support to make them meta viable, that's the worst way to tackle the problem. Quick example, if Konami releases a good Blue Eyes support card, that by any means supports dragons in a way, it would just became a new staple for dragon link and probably boost their power level again, it's a balancing problem where if you give new tools to one deck in order to compete you incidentally give that power bump to the rest of the decks. What could fix the problems it's creating a really closed space where those decks are the top and the support is balanced around them specifically and just for them. Something like a 3 way format where Blue eyes, Red eyes and Dark Magician are the only decks allowed to be played withe their own style perfectly focused (big immune beatsticks, burning DMG and recursion and spell/trap control).

I love the idea of shorts for new supported archetypes that are meta relevant! I like the idea of a anime side format but I think it runs into the same issues the heart of the underdog formats do since there isn’t Konami guidance. I think the easiest way to make a some what new player friendly format for locals is structure deck only formats. Konami decides what recent structure decks are allowed to be used. How many is it a 3x structure deck tournament or just 1. I like 3 I think it helps with deck building and variance but does increase the price range for entry. I think for this to be successful it would help if Konami pushed this with prizing that gets competitive players interested. But still allowing newer players to feel like at least there playing on somewhat even ground. I think this is a way to learn about your deck and strategy when facing somewhat that is more skillful then you too

Team APS. What you're not understanding between the competitive and casual scene. Is if you go back in time to the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh the were always five monsters 5e spells and five trap cards. That the competitive players and casual players could all agree upon that were good. And they were good and every single deck. And if you did put these fifteen good cards in your deck you were going to relatively be okay when you were playing a game you would win some games and you would lose some games. But now there's not those 15 cars that you can put in any deck the make the deck good. That's what's really missing from modern Yu-Gi-Oh from a game-play standpoint is there's not just 15 good generic cards that people can put in there decks five good monsters five good spells. And five good trap. When people said they're old-school deck used to be good they were talking about those 15 cards you don't have that in modern Yu-Gi-Oh. Putting a pot of extravagance. In your DAC does not make it slightly better. It can actually make it worse.

Whenever I want to buy an anime or a deck that has a unique mechanic or boss monster, I checked out the deck profile youtubers only to see the ideal end board is Apollousa/ Accesscode/ Borrelsword if it has a swarming field power, turned into an F0 Utopic Draco Future or AA Zeus if it's an xyz deck, or turned into a Baronne if it's a synchro deck. I know you have mentioned it in the video, but I just want to point out that everytime I saw an anime deck profile video, I got desensitized when LITERALLY ALMOST EVERY DECK PROFILE is just using the same generic boss monsters over and over. Now I just skip over to the end and say along the lines of "What's the point of this video then??" I don't think that a Konami sanctioned "casual" format can ever work. Most casual players will never actually show up to a real tournament, and when they "come back to the game", they might buy some packs, but then they'll just play some games with a Yugi deck on YGO Pro or something and that's where they'll quit. The people who are actually going to locals are already people who have bought in and you don't need to advertise to them anymore. What these events would really look like would be an incredibly small number of new or returning players there to check out the game, the majority of players being already long time fans of the game just going to play their casual decks, and a small group of people just trying to ruin it for everyone else by always playing whatever the best cards available are, defeating the whole point of the event. There isn't a place or an incentive for these kinds of things to exist.

I love anime decks, especially Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes, and even GX and 5D's archetypes like Cyber Dragon, Stardust Dragon, and Red Dragon Archfiend, but none of it is competitive. Literally, everything is generic Extra Deck boss monsters or staple competitive cards that prevent the opponent from playing the game, especially handtraps and floodgates. Konami has dug themselves into a hole, the anime sells, especially DM, but no one plays anime archetypes competitively, without shoving a lot of generic stuff in just to make them marginally viable at best. The lore of many of the modern competitive archetypes is interesting, especially the Duel Terminal storylines, but it is largely glossed over in favor of continuously returning to the DM well.

Modern-day competitive Yugioh isn't very marketable IMO. It's very hard to sell the game in its present state as fun and/or entertaining without doing so in small increments at a time. The game is difficult to approach because of this divide, and returning players are completely turned off because they expected the game they had love for years ago, and it isn't remotely the same. While natural evolution can be a great thing, and I do believe that the majority of changes to Yugioh, for example all the summoning mechanics (besides pendulum of course, screw pendulum it absolutely sucks) are great and also are both compatable and fun to use in older or even classic formats, but sadly there are also a lot of changes that have ruined the fun of the game at the competitive level and have stripped away a lot of the creativity and uniqueness of the game. I can pretty much only play casually with family & friends in an older format style, I can't even really play Duel Links or Master Duel due to the risk of running into a 30 minute first turn kill deck or an hour and a half first turn that creates an unbreakable board that negates my entire existence IRL that I just do not find fun at all being so very high. I personally am never reallg disappointed by a lot of the legacy support, because I use a few of what you might call legacy decks sometimes, and being more or less a casual legacy player I would almost rather have that than a bunch of overly complicated and/or outrageously overpowered stuff, or a wacky amount of complex pieces to lead to a never-ending combo that ends the game before anyone can do anything if I was even able to memorize it all or stay awake long enough to complete it

The issue is that a lot of these newer boss monsters aren't nearly as iconic as Dark Magician or Blue Eyes and they probably never will be, because these old card have almost attained Pikachu status, everyone who's even tangencially related to the anime sphere will know who they are even if they didn't ever play Yu-Gi-Oh or watched the original series. You're never gonna do better than Kuriboh or the Egyptian God Cards cards. I've watched the series till VRAINS (that one lost me) and tbh after GX the only cards I can remember from the anime are ... Stardust Dragon, Archiend Dragon, Black Rose Dragon and Odd Eyes Dragon ... man a lot of dragons ... and the frightfurs, cause those were cute. but except for the frightfurs I remember the cards not because they were cool or anything but cause they were the signature cards. I don't really think you can advertise new stuff to a large audience without putting out a product that has the cultural impact of the original series. Oh also you'll probably never gonna have characters that get close to Yami Yugi and Kaiba, Yusei being the closest I can think of, but still doesn't have the same appeal. If there is intelligent life out there then let's teach them how to duel!

Yugioh, along with Pokemon, struggles with the Gen. 1 marketing problem. A massive amount of the customer base for both franchises is most familiar with the early offerings. The company is left with the decision of old reliable or taking a risk with new products. Given how risk-adverse most large companies are, it's not uprising we see so much BEWD and Charizard. Maqgic has the opposite problem where translating the setting to other media has been basically impossible.

I feel like Konami got way too comfortable with their lazy approach to advertising in the west, relying overly on the iconic imagery because they feel like they're too big to bother revamping things. Either that or they're just being lazy while they wait for the game to fall off enough to justify stopping the game and turning it into a pachinko machine. Also, as someone who stopped playing mid XYZ era and only recently returned to the game, I am very disappointed in how they've handed supporting older decks. I can understand things like a Blue Eyes deck relying on new Blue Eyes boss monsters due to the games power-creep, but I absolutely can't stand the idea of calling your deck a [insert archetype here] deck despite barely using said archetype and having all generic boss monsters. Plus all the archetypes that haven't gotten support yet, like Jurracs, Vylons, etc, while archetypes that were over supported even back in the day continue to get more support, like Blackwings! I've honestly felt like there are many problems with Yugioh, but it'll be near impossible to fix without rebooting the game from scratch. I've considered the idea of raising the minimum card limit for decks to 50 or 60 to slow things down a bit, or introducing some method of deck building restrictions besides the ban list and casual fan formats. As it is, the game bounced from being 90% generic stuff that was supported by archetypes, to being archetype dominated with generic support, and back again but in a much worse way. Like they tried to find a balance between Archetype and Generic but keep swinging so wide they might as well split the game in two as one side now tends to make the other obsolete.

I doubt Konami Japan actually tells western Konami not to market new stuff and only market the DM era stuff. I think the western Konami just has no trust in anything past DM so they keep slapping DM characters on everything, like Mako.... The game has progressed, the anime has progressed and western Konami just keeps dusting off the characters from literally 20 years ago. Market the new stuff, make new fans, bring in fresh blood to the franchise. You can't do that by ignoring everything that has happened in the last 15 years And this is also how they create the yugi boomers. They didn't promote the new stuff so people didn't watch it, didn't buy the cards etc so when they come back they have no idea in what state the franchise is or if it's even alive today. And what does Konami do? Advertise the dusty character from decades past and make people think that nothing has changed. And you can't really bring in new fans from the old stuff. Yugioh was in 4:3. That's how old it is. You need the new shows to being in new fans.
