Hongdu, a time-honored brand in Beijing, is widely recognized as the best Zhongshan suit manufacturer. The company has been providing suit tailoring services to generations of China's top officials and foreign dignitaries for 55 years.Hongdu, meaning "red capital", moved from Shanghai to Beijing in 1956. @_SilverArrow_xxx the so-called "Mao suit" is actually called "Zhongshan Suit" in China. Zhongshan is Dr. Sun Yat-sen's another name. He invented Zhongshan Suit with the base of Japanese school uniform. He added 4 pockets, which means "Courtesy, Justice, Integrity and Sense of Shame". they are the 4 important traditional Chinese values. 5 buttons refer to "5 separate parts of powers" spirit of the Consititution. Mao and other Chinese communists had joined Kuomingtang(the Nationalist Party) during the first KMT-CPC collaboration. Chinese communists highly respect Dr. Sun Yat-sen's effort on Chinese revolution. They see Zhongshan suit as a symbol of progress, so kept wearing it until today.

When have Mandarin-collar for that suit, it becomes differentiated by material. From business-suit(short-sleeve) to worker-jacket(protective and carry tools). No same from politicians

Not gonna lie, the Zhongshan suit did not hold up. It was designed during harsh times, by people of military backgrounds with very conservative views, all of which reflected by the efficient use of materials, functional easy to wear style and drab look. Combine that with the association with 20th century Chinese politicians, who caused genocides, famine and war, it's no wonder nobody's wearing them nowadays. They were supposed to be the designated formal wear for all Chinese men but not even high ranking Chinese officials wear them as often as the western suit and tie. The ideology implications were neat though, sadly none of them were reflected by it's wearers.

President and some party members still wear it, but it’s very confused with the stalin tunic
