Larry, I thought it was hard ranking the Beatles songs! That was easy compared to ranking the songs on this album. I don't know how you did it. I'll say this: I think "This Will Be Our Year" might be my favorite song off of this album, and, honestly, "Time of the Season" might be my least favorite. And it's not because "Time of the Season" has been played to death my entire life and has been referenced in every late 60's-related movie or television show - I'm OK hearing the song a thousand more times in my life. I just think the other 10 songs are tied for 2nd, and, by comparison, "Time of the Season" just isn't as great as the others. This album is absolutely the next link after Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper for anyone who likes those albums. They even started recording in Abbey Road just as Sgt. Pepper was being released. It's as 60's an album as the 60's get. If anyone is a fan of 1960's music, they HAVE to listen to this record. I'm sure any ranking by anyone is valid.
@@sabbathbloodysabbath3351 That song is unlike any other - haunting - incredible - so completely different from everything else on the album that, like Tomorrow Never Knows, it both a) doesn't really seem to belong, but b) absolutely completes the album.
Very cool you were able to come up with a ranking for these songs. I can't do it. My fave 6 songs: Care of Cell 44, Maybe After He's Gone, Brief Candles, Hung Up On a Dream, Changes, Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914.) You can put those in almost any order. The big single (Time of the Season) isn't even in my top half, and the song is excellent. That's how rad this album is.
Great review. I love this album. Butchers Tale for me is not only the best on the album but one of the best songs I have ever heard: it's chillingly powerful. I think of two of my grandfather's two brothers who were killed and a third shell-shocked in WWI for Britain.
Why do most people only appreciate "Odyssey and Oracle?" I would strongly recommend to check out the earlier compositions by the Zombies. They had a run of dozens fantastic compositions since 1964 beyond the overplayed hits (She's not there, Time of the season). You could find many of them on the "Singles A's +B's" - 2CD collection.
Does anyone know what is a good CD pressing? I am having a hard time finding the recommended 1998 version (30th Anniversary?), however, I can get a hold of the 40th Anniversary and the 2001 pressing. Are either of those good? I am looking for audio clarity as well as good spacial cues and soundstage. I listened to the album here on RU-vid and it seems to be what I am after, but naturally, the quality here is for the birds. I know the CD is better, but I do know that is also dependent on the pressing. I just want to know which is the best one to get.
The Zombies are a very good group Larry, verty talented and this album is like the love child of the Beachboys and the Beatles, very sixties and very British with my favorite song on the album being the brilliant Time Of The Season but I also quite like This Will Be Our Year which I think is absolutely wonderful,I also quite like Colin Blunstone's vocals,he's a wonderful singer. Bob.
The Zombies deserve more attention for sure. I was once inside Abbey Road Studios, by the way, and the hallways were stacked high with boxes of audiotape reels. I saw a stack of Buzzcocks tapes. Speaking of which -- The Buzzcocks!! Know? Like? Thanks Larry.
My personal ranking is a lot different from yours 12. Butcher's tale 11. I want her she wants me 10. Maybe after he's gone 9. Friends of mine 8. This will be our year 7. Care of cell 44 6. Changes 5. Brief Candles 4. Time of the season 3. A rose for Emily 2. Hung up on a dream 1. Beechwood park
Argent is "co-lead vocal" on "A Rose For Emily." The main voice is Blunstone's. 12 - "I Want Her, She Wants Me" 11 - "Hung Up On A Dream" 10 - "Maybe After He's Gone" 9 - "Butcher's Tale" 8 - "Brief Candles" 7 - "Changes" 6 - "Beechwood Park" 5 - "This Will Be Our Year" 4 - "Friends Of Mine" 3 - "A Rose For Emily" 2 - "Time Of The Season" 1 - "CARE OF CELL 44"
I could not agree more on your #1 pick, 'Care of Cell 44' is brilliant with a Beach Boys harmony but a darker edge. His girl is getting out of prison but it never says what she went in there for. Love it.
