We’re heading back to Japan for this week’s case! Hideto’s stalking happened over a timespan of six years… I can’t even begin to imagine her fear, right through to the very end. What are your thoughts on Hideto Kodutsumi? By the way, I finally figured out how to use my studio lights properly! No more blinding lights while I’m telling you my weekly stories! ☕
I'm going to ask for something maybe a little weird...but could you maybe think about changing the titles so they focus on the victims? It almost feels like it immortalises the perps. I notice sometimes you do this and other times you don't. Completely up to you of course, but just thought I would float it. I do love the way you tell these stories!
Is that why you looked so much more comfortable? Adrian, your channel is improving in leaps and bounds! Keep it going, please. Thank you for all your hard work, and the way you end your videos, highlighting changes in law due to the crime, disposition of surviving family and what happened to the criminal after the crime is a nice, neat way to tidy things up. ✌😸
I think you’d be great at covering the case of Lucy Blackman and the problem of murdered foreign girls in Japan as told in the book People Who Eat Darkness
The one thing that frustrates me the most about these stalking cases is how much power the stalkers have over their victims, they're practically invincible until they seriously hurt or kill the person they're tormenting. Even in cases like this where the victim does everything right, the stalker is still able to somehow find them because of incompetent people.
The government was so incompetent. How do you leave her address to the stalker and also force them to pay so much for security cameras. Those security cameras could’ve been live saving but “muh capitalism”
@@ragingflare123 If those cameras were still there she might've been able to spot him lurking around and allowed her to react accordingly. I can understand removing the patrols, but uninstalling the cameras just seems so unnecessary, especially when the person who needs them is at risk.
@@UnordoxRevs It could have made up for the lack of police security. It could have given evidence he was lurking and skulking about. They could have done something then before she lost her life.
This story is very personal to me. I once dated a man who, when I left him, threatened to make my life miserable - and did. I had to open a case against him, almost lost my job after being suspended for a month due to his actions and suffered immense mental torture. Until you've been in a situation where someone is intent on making your life a living hell, you'll never understand how debilitating it can be. RIP Riye Mioshi. You didn't deserve what happened to you 😢
@@SS-yj2le wow you’re so edgy 🙄 he couldn’t get anyone better he was a loser who was obsessed with someone that didn’t want him. How cool 😎 he took the cowards way out after all that!
"What do you think of the Zushi stalker?" I think he was a selfish asshole who should have taken a good look at himself instead of blaming and killing someone who had actually tried to help him but left when she was finally sick of his shit.
The fact that the husband was compensated $10k for this truly infuriates me. Honestly, a flat-out refusal for any compensation would have been MUCH less insulting. Just wow.
@@adzreenaziz6255 From Adrian and other research into the Japanese social and justice system, it now makes sense. It was too good to be true. It's like those prestige boarding schools where everything and anything is perfect because it's the culture and everyone is happy that way. Humans are "wild" and are "tamed" by strict restrictions. So if there's no visible restrictions, I suspect that the justice system is mainly about sweeping things under the carpet. Many victims suffer in silence
my aunt who lived in south korea most of her life was stalked 3 years by this guy who they didn't wanna arrest because they had "no proof", but it wasn't that, just like the reply above me says, they don't take women seriously at all in east asia, not anywhere, but it's something else over there to the point where it's so dangerous even going there in the first place as a female.
@@AstarionWifey Relax your wokeness, the issue also happens to man. The problem is that the Japanese legal system is to light with anything that is not murder or drugs. In this channel there is a video of a girl who almost killed her bf, and she got 3.5 YEARS
The most frightening thing is that it falls to the victim to be ever vigilant. As a friend of mine once said, "To save their life the victim of an abusive domestic partner, a stalker, or an abusive ex must give up their entire life, cutting all threads, because it just takes Aunty A who never believed that charming person was abusive and so blithely hands over contact details." This in the context of escaping stalkers before the internet wherein an entire new set of tools exist to find someone as demonstrated by Hideto's use of data-mining type questions. Sadly, protecting possible abuse victims generally goes into the too hard/too expensive basket. After all not all abusers/stalkers kill... :(
I don't believe he was mad. He was an evil calculating selfish person. If he could not have her, no one would. Plus he took his life because his goal had been met. He never thought of his life moving forward after murdering this young woman.
Narcissist*. By calling these types of people "mad" or "crazy" makes it seem like it's a rare condition, but these types of people are more prevalent than we think.
Maybe if countries took mental illness more seriously crimes like these would be less frequent. Evil is meaningless word that belongs in fairytales not real life.
the fact that he felt so entitled to her.. she tried to help him in the beginning and he didn't budge (which is fine, not everyone wants to be helped) and then when she feels like the relationship isn't healthy for her and leaves he suddenly is like 'you don't deserve happiness'? LIKE??? he's such a creep; an actual psychopath cause he was so set on her.. he makes me sick ):
I’ve had my ex-fiancé stalk me in Japan for about a year and a half (I broke up with him since he was physically and emotionally abusive), and the police did squat. They REALLY need to enforce newer stalking legislation because as things stand now, the enforcement sucks.
@KahlosHack I think it's because it isn't good to promote the idea that one should commit suicide even if you think you're a piece of sh*t. Ideally, he should have seeked mental help and learnt to let go of his obsession (even though he was clearly either a narcissist or a sociopath and those disorders are very difficult to treat).
@@LyricalIAm if the court or doctors had mandated that he see a therapist, either for the stalking or the suicide idealization, then he might have been diagnosed. But, you're right that he probably wouldn't accept the diagnosis.
I really appreciate your loving way of telling the most horrible stories. You treat the victims and their friends and relatives with the utmost respect. Thank you very much. Please keep telling us these stories!
Once you said he took his life & she was dead I instantly was disgusted by the fact that he felt that he had to take her life because in his mind he was thinking if he wasn’t going to live then neither should she. You can’t get much more selfish than that. I bet he thought that in some sick twisted form of fate that they would be together in death & the afterlife. I feel so sorry for the family & others who have lost their lives this way. It happened to an old friend of mine where her dad killed her mom then took his own life also. Just awful…
I love when you do videos on Japan cases they are always really interesting. We don’t ever hear enough about them and a lot of other Crime RU-vidr’s talk about the same old cases over and over again.
I love that you cover all these Japanese cases. You dont see them much and a lot I hadn't even heard of. You're so respectful to all involved and bringing light to the cases.
Mental illness is bizarre and can be so strong. To end the life of someone you fully believe is the love of your life or a soulmate is insane. Like, if you truly loved someone wouldn't you rather the live a long happy life instead of dead and being terrified of you when they died.
I really can't even understand stalkers...3 years of not talking and staying so focused on them? And boy is it infuriating that he was able to get her name and address from an oversight. So terrible. And don't get me started on how stupid restraining orders are. They will never stop a person who needs a restraining order.
I do understand them. Three years can be nothing, when you've had no one else in your life. You can cling to a delusion for much, much longer. Letting go of the past isn't easy, especially when a person has no future to look forward to.
I watch your videos every week and look forward to each and every Monday with you! I love how you always say, "look after each other," at the end of every video, and I've been following your channel for months now. I just wanted to say, that this case is truly heartbreaking, and one of the saddest cases I've ever seen on your channel, but I also wanted to say that you always manage to portray the victims in these horrific cases as such lovely people, and that's something I truly appreciate in true crime videos. I love how you always include lots of pictures of the victims and talk about their hobbies and interests, as it truly helps us all to get to know them better. You truly honor the victims in the best way when you let us know what kind of people they were and what kind of lives that they lived. I love how you cover cases from all over the globe because you've introduced me to so, so many different cases that I've never heard of until seeing your weekly videos. Keep up the awesome work, Adrian!!! I look forward to seeing your merchandise hit online stores! I do hope so very much that you, of course, have a nice coffee cup for me to purchase in the future, so that I can drink my coffee in a special cup while watching. Much love, all the way from Louisiana!!! xoxo
This channel can be one of the best true crime channels on RU-vid. How much you respect the victims is extremely refreshing. Keep up the great content.
So frustrating that simple errors can cost someone their lives. Especially when they are trying to follow the letter of the law. It's already harrowing enough to try and prove stalking and be taken seriously. It's sad to think of a stranger finding the murder scene as a small mercy to her husband.
@@louisecoffey9843 Yup, that's exactly what I thought. Also, he succeeded with his initial mission later anyway, so might aswell have succeed right then and there and spared her life.
Adrian said under another similar comment that he doesn’t want to encourage or praise suicide/suicidal thoughts. He wished the stalker would’ve been treated after his first suicide attempt and then cured so that no one had died. However, the reality of Japan (and South Korea btw) regarding mental health is = they don’t want to care. They are in denial and see taking care of it as a “weakness” except there are the ones being weak no treating it and letting their people die, being abused, enslaved, and basically anything besides being a happy and respected citizen/human being. Tragic.
@@solarose7820 as someone living in South Korea I can confirm this to be true, mental health here is not a thing, there are barely any mental health providers and no one goes to mental health even if they truly need it because they think going to mental health is "admiting to society they are crazy, mentally inferior, etc", very sad because I needed a psychologist and could never find one in this country due to how stigmatized mental health is here
@@flyingcloud2677 oh hey! I am really sorry that you couldn’t be properly treated there. It’s just tragic. In this case I always advise people to try and find help online and/or find a young psychologist who’s been to the West. Countries have much more to gain if they acknowledge this very serious health issue. Hope you’re doing good ;) take care ! 화이팅! ㅋㅋㅋ
I am so obsessed with This Channel that I rewatch cases all the time and sometimes I'm so excited I forget to comment or anything. Love your channel man. Your respect for all these cases is truly commendable. Edit: This stuff just makes me more happy that I'm not on social media anymore. And men like this makes me scared of getting into a relationship.
Absolutely terrifying. Basically everyone failed Rie at every turn. :( I hope she only knows peace now and that her husband has all the support he could ever need
If that court took this stalker's capabilities seriously, they wouldn't have slipped up at the hearing and released her new name and address. Jesus Christ. They're culpable
This one is incredibly sad. She did everything right, and due to the negligence of others, she lost her life. I'm glad they made changes to the law. At the very least, she didn't die in vain. Her sacrifice will help protect other people being stalked in Japan.
I had a stalker too almost ten years ago. I had forgotten about it, not having heard from him in years. Then I accidentally made my LinkedIn profile public for 1 day and sure enough he had searched for it and found it. If they could devote themselves to something useful with the same tenacity that they devote themselves to stalking their victims, we'd have flying cars and a cure for cancer by now. I wish we could educate people about the kinds of personality traits that people who become stalkers have in common, so everyone would know to avoid them. It seems to me these people are self-centered, feel very entitled, take no responsibility for their own actions or feelings, feels they are owed affection and love from others - the list goes on. If you meet someone and they exhibit these behaviours, please be careful.
As sad as the cases in these videos are, the form they are told is so fluid that I always watch them ASAP. The chronological order, and explaining important details as they come up, make it much easier to follow. While some true crime channels edit creatively, this form of simple and straightforward telling is a lot more satisfying to me. Thank you again for posting such quality content ❤
I was just thinking of your channel, hence it’s Monday so I know that’s your scheduled day to upload; so I peeped. And here you are with another great crime story I’ve never heard of. As always keep up the great work Adrian. BEST OF THE BEST‼️🙌🏽🙌🏽
Another TOP quality story from coffee house. Keep it up! The excellent quality and time you put into everything dose not go unnoticed! But man, what a sad sad story......
Advice to me: Walk around with a frown, dress like a bag lady, always take a different way home. But at 62 I don't think I have anything to worry about.
i pretty much DO all that! At 69, I'm not getting stalked, but guys try to chat me up a LOT! The only thing I have is a good attitude and good posture.
It's not about how you dress or what your facial expression is or what you look like. The victim isn't the one to blame here. I realize that's not what you're trying to say but stalking or any other crime of this nature has zero to do with the way a person looks or dresses. That's a seriously bad stereotype that should never be put out there. The person who commits the crime looks for an opportunity, not a short skirt.
The court f’ed up so badly with not omitting her info. Stalking, intimidation, and a no contact order and YET they still gave him the ammo to continue his obsession
Sad that a privilege guy doesn't get what he wants and figures he needs to make her as miserable as he was. Prayers for her family and friends. And his family and friends. Thank you for sharing!
Yet another sad story and something that could have been prevented if the police and other officials hadn’t mucked up! It reminds me of something that happened here in the city I live in, in Japan: I was teaching at a university here. It was December 1997. In my class, I had a beautiful and very bright student whom I will call Kyoko. She was going to graduate the following Spring and had been offered a job as a stewardess at a major Japanese airline. (This, by the way, was considered a very prestigious job). Ever since she had been a high school student, a strange classmate of hers used to stalk her. She had never dated him but he was obsessed with her. He would follow her, stand outside her house, send her love letters, etc. She ignored him to no avail. Once she entered university, he became even more aggressive. He himself was just a lout and didn’t do anything with his days but stalk Kyoko. Her father was deceased and she lived with her mother and sister. As time went by, this guy started showing signs of violence. Kyoko and her mother went to report this man’s actions several times to the police, who said that they couldn’t do anything as he hadn’t attacked her.... figure that one out 🤔! Then one day in December 1997, he went armed with a butcher knife to Kyoko’s house and rang on the doorbell. Her mother told Kyoko to go upstairs while she dealt with the guy. Kyoko did just that, but as soon as the mother opened the door, she was stabbed repeatedly by the guy, Hearing her mother’s screams, Kyoko rushed downstairs, only to be attacked and stabbed to death. The murderer then went outside, sat on the porch steps, bloody knife in his hand waiting for the police to arrive. He was arrested but wouldn’t talk and acted dumb. If I remember correctly , his sentence in the end was rather lenient because it was deemed he was mentally off! Kyoko’s mother couldn’t attend her own daughter’s funeral as her injuries required she be hospitalized for a couple of months. We were all grief-stricken. Had the police acted before the attack, Kyoko might still be alive today. By the way, there had been many such incidents of women attacked by stalkers and the police doing absolutely nothing. Thanks to this incident with Rie Shibata, the laws changed and stalking is now a crime in Japan. To all the girls like Rie and Kyoko who had to lose their lives before the police took stalking seriously I say, “Rest In Peace”, your deaths were not in vain. Now, many women and men are protected, thanks to your very sad sacrifices.🙏🏽
People have said it plenty already, but your sense compassion and respect for the victims is really awesome. Thanks for the videos! You are my favorite in the genre just because of who you are. 🤗❤️
"He did not take his mental health seriously" Well that's the thing. Mental Health isn't something you speak about in Japan. At least from what I know. You can't get a therapist because of depression, it's not accounted as illness. I may be wrong here, though. It's only what I was told from others who live or lived in Japan. (And for anyone's information, that doesn't mean it's right to neglect your mental health or stalk other people! I don't defend his actions or anything, it's just an information regarding the culural background.)
That's one of many problems Japan has. Most people don't want to acknowledge some issues. Also there's the "individual isnt that important as "the whole group".
I hope you keep on covering japanese cases because they are so intriguing and you present them so well. Your research and way of presentation is very good. Thank you for your hard work!
It's important for those who suffered some like this Not have social networks not posting places of where You visit or city or town where You live Forget the tendences or fashion or popularity not worth your life
how would such a narcissist react if he "threatened" suicide and the other person says "go ahead and do it, i don't care"? would he do it out of sheer spite or wouldn't he because he thinks he is oh so precious and a gift to the world? gosh, i HATE depressed narcissists!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Adrian for your intelligent, informative and always respectful presentations, I look forward to seeing you every week......cheers from Victoria Australia
It makes me wonder what kind of mental health care he got after his first two suicide attempts, or if he got any. Maybe had he had some sort of services things wouldn't have turned out this way.
Even in the west, they'll let you out same day if you can just pretend to be okay enough. It's kind of a joke. I just went home and tried again a few days later.
When reading comments here, I keep noticing people saying things along the lines of "....oh I need to dress like a bag lady...." or "...we need to make sure teenagers are taught that nobody is worth killing or going to jail for...." Well no kidding but these statements kind of irritate me. First off, the perpetrators in these cases are not killing people because the victims are so good looking or sexy that they can't help themselves. It wasn't about how they were dressed. It also wasn't about the fact that the perpetrators were simply "never taught" not to kill. The murderers were fucked up in the head. To say things like, "Oh if only she hadn't dressed sexy" or "oh if only they'd been taught not to kill" which is essentially what you're saying is pretty ridiculous. Don't put the blame on the victim. It's mental health and it's not about someone's looks. Please don't perpetuate these dumb stereotypes.
I always find the Japanese cases more interesting than others. And no it's not because I like anime. It's the japanese culture, the sinister mood, and the intriguing ways that the laws are enforced (or not) in Japan.
I'm not quite a third of the way through this, but my sympathy for Hideto officially ended @4:45 and onward 😡 Wow, i see where this is going and that makes me so sad for poor Rei 😢 💔
Damn. What hurts so much is that it all could've been prevented... More severe punishment please! The lightest we can do is for the first time of arrest, normal jail time and probation. But if that same person does it for the 2nd time, it should be death row automatically. I don't believe in giving these psychos another chance.
I was stalked and kidnapped for 2 years when I was in college. The police corruption was beyond comprehension in LA, where one jerk made a pass at me. I had evidence, but they all protected him and he is still on the force, while the stalker with a long criminal record is still living free the past 25 years. It took me 2 decades to overcome the aftermath that none of them had to deal with. Despicable bullshit. Stalkers need to be put away for a long time in a mental institution. RIP
Your videos are excellent informative, unbiased and compassionate - rare aualities in videos dealing with crime. I particularly commend (as others hVe done) your treatment of life histories from Japan.. please keep up the good work!
Cases like these go to show that mental health is never taken as seriously as physical (i.e. visible) ailments. Also, repeated instances of stalking and harassment, especially from the same offender, are not given the attention, nor the diligence, they deserve. Rie did all that she could to avoid seeing this toxic individual, wasting the life that he was born into, for her own safety and her sanity. And the negligence of local government led to her being constantly harassed by the unreasonable, fanatical, and frankly delusional individual before finally being killed in her own home. T_T You can't trust anyone out there, especially government officials.
This man was so deeply, profoundly evil. When these things happen, people love to point out what the victim should have done to better protect themselves (sometimes rightfully so, despite the insensitivity) but Riyu took EVERY precaution and safety measure possible from the moment she determined that the relationship was dangerous to her. Poor poor poor sweet lady, may her soul Rest In Peace.
All stalkers must be taken seriously by law enforcement. The victim shouldn’t be allowed to be terrorized until they’re assaulted or killed before something is done to stop them ?
i agree! the law enforcement is not helping! they called my stalker and she outright lied to them! she is my husbands sister and she is now spreading lies all over and is trying to ruin my rep with lies! i am emotionally drained
More Japanese cases please. I'll admit, they're the only videos I really watch on your channel. I don't know what it is but something about crime in Japan fascinates me.
Hideto was clearly a messed up guy. Mad props to my girl for identifying a bad situation and actually taking action and leaving. I'm glad she was able to remain in control of her life and find happiness even if it was short lived. Is it just me or does Japan take stalking cases way more seriously than the U.S.?
@@margaretr5701 I know, but one would have thought they should cut him off, but they created a monster,by spoiling him and letting him get away being lazy
This is sad , I’ve had friends who have went to Japan and have been stalked . I know Japans law against women with sexual assault/ stalking are extremely bad . Rip to her
I had a stalker some years ago. And someone who bordered on stalking. Now I am not an amazing looking fellow, so it was weird when I started getting the calls and messages. My point is that it's fucking horrible and honestly better law's should be placed to protect us. For the record one just stopped and the other one Is currently engaged.
This is what I despise about stalking cases or more accurately the punishment afterwards. Jail time, restraining orders, they dont do much except buy time for the victim and even then the victim is still looking over their shoulders in fear and anxiety. There are a lot of people who don't care if they violated the restraining order as long as they get what they want. Its always the victims who have to change everything in their life to protect themselves.
I lived in Niigata prefecture for a few years .... across the rice paddy from my bedroom window, over the next few evenings I realized I had a stalker, a female in her little car was following me around town and then watching me from her car .... nothing ever happened but it was bizarre and slightly unsettling ❗
Horrific. To think maybe you finally shook a scary character off and left em in the past only to have em reappear and kill you. Absolutely horrifying. And for the husband to get 10k after as compensation from the country? Literal slap in the face.
It's concerning how this guy wasn't even institutionalized when they found him in the mountains. :/ right there, they would've been able to intervene, get him mental help or whatever. Also, hideto's 1 year incarceration vs Rie assimilating a new life? Government would've been able to save more if Hideto wqs kept in jail or a facility than hiding Rie, putting cameras in her place, etc. And what even will this apology do? It's so infuriating. Poor Rie and Husband.
My ex husband stalked me for almost 10 years after our break up. Just been the last few years he has been quiet, but if anything were to ever happen to me, I would urge the police to look at him first! I dont know whether after spending years looking over my shoulder, im paranoid now!
I’m really enjoying all the international cases you showcase I’m very close to subscribing to your Channel as I have enjoyed many many of your videos Please continue ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍✅ Best wishes Las Vegas Craig
