Did not anticipate Zuff's theater kid era lol. As a theater kid myself and someone who still works in production when I can, this movie is such a comfort. I'm a few years older than you guys so I remember the one from 2003 called Camp. It has Stephen Sondheim in it and if you don't know who that is he's like the musical theater god.

Also fun fact the actors that play Amos and Glenn are engaged in real life!!!!! And the actors of Amos and Rebecca are indeed best friends since they were 12! So the little clips was in fact them as little kids! She was the first person he came out to in real life i believe!

There was a bonus scene in the credits where Joan woke up and the woman that saw the show told her it was great 😂

It's definitely a silly movie, but for all of us who really were in this community know how this all went. We've all either been, or met, the crazy theatre kids who took it too seriously. We all knew the intense theatre teachers. Fun Fact: The actors for Amos and Glen are both Broadway stars, they both played the same role, and are actually in a relationship. Also, I really did cry the first time I watched the finale, because I was that kid who didn't have a lot of friends and felt the community of being with people who really understood that feeling.

this movie made me wish i grew up a theater kid. i’ve always wanted to do theater but didn’t get the chance because of a lack of theater opportunities where i grew up. my parents also didn’t let me (grew up an athlete). i still love theater and musicals so this was just super fun to watch

Whoa, I never expected you guys would watch this. I love it so much. But, I'm a retired professional dancer with roots in hometown community theater. I never had the good fortune to attend theater camp as a kid, but all the character types in this movie also exist in community theater so I relate completely. ❤ Ps. My favorite reacts are when none of you have seen the movie before. 🙌 Edit: (just finished watching) glad you guys liked it. Even among those of us who loved the film, there's a very popular opinion that the kids themselves could've / should've had more screentime. The character of Amos was way over the top and I think we were all exhausted of him by the time they had their blowout. Still, the magical moments in this movie are so good, you just kinda tolerate Amos. ...which is maybe the point? Since that's kinda how it goes in real life with people who are like that. 😆

For 8 years straight, middle school through high school, I attended a Theater Camp every summer called P.A.C (Performance Arts Camp). It's up by Flathead Lake here in Montana; and I can't talk enough about how accurate this movie was compared to my experience. Obviously everything is dramatized; the counselors don't say stuff like "If you mess up a line, what does that say about you." But that is for sure how it FELT whenever you'd screw up in front of over 100 other kids and all your teachers. We didn't quite have kids doing Instagram modeling at camp, but there were certainly people who never stopped taking pictures and videos during rehearsal so they could post them all over and brag about solos and stuff. (not that I'd know) The throat coat tea is totally true; up in Montana the fire seasons can get really bad. Some years the smoke would be devastating to our singing voices, so they'd make us huge jugs full of Throat Coat, so hot you can feel the plastic water bottle warm up and become softer after you fill it. (People brought their own tea too, they brought also honey because it's really good for your voice too) The pressure is real though, we had like 1 week to learn the lyrics, music, blocking, choreography, and lines for not one but multiple musicals. (We'd usually do a medley, three or four songs from three or four shows, each.) And that's all before we even get to the actual theater where we perform, after that we have a week to apply what we've practiced to the REAL stage, learn one or two NEW songs with the younger kids from the camp below us, and finally perform this two+ hour show like 8 times in a weekend. Also the "Tech" guy being the one who makes sure the show actually runs is true as well. Tech, lights, set production, and sound are the glue that holds the production together, otherwise it'd just be a bunch of children screaming on a stage. (Not to mention the orchestra, ALWAYS show appreciation for The Pit)

A lot of these kids in the movie have actually Been on Broadway or in big productions in New York but not Broadway including the kid who played Sebastian. Plus the guy that played Glenn (Noah Galvin) and Amos (Ben Platt) both played Evan Hansen in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway and are married in real life. That’s how they met. Also they missed it (my missed it my first watch through too) but in the credits it cuts to a scene of Joan waking up and freaking out that Troy was running the camp.

I watched this movie because I love Ben Platt’s work, ngl. I was a band/colorguard kid, not theater. If I’m being honest I didn’t feel super invested in the characters throughout the movie, but did I cry my eyes out when those kids sang the finale song? You bet your ass I did. Definitely a cute movie!

As a former theatre non-theatre kid, never took the classes but I ended up as the assistant director,… it’s a completely different world. It might be cringe half the time, but it’s more full of life than other groups of similar peerage. Many will surprise you, like normal, of course you can never judge a book by its’ cover.

Ok…ITS MY TIME! (Username checks out) As someone who is a professional stage manager I can confirm nearly all of this is true. Sometimes exaggerated stereotypes but not always and it’s pretty much based in fact. That said…PLEASE REACT TO SOME PRO SHOTS!!! Filmed live theatre performances that are available on streaming! I highly recommend; -Billy Elliot live (hardest child role ever. Tom holland got his start playing this role in the west end) -Newsies (Based on the Disney movie about the newsboy strike in nyc) -Hamilton (The story of Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers, rapped) -Come from away (Based on the life events surrounding 9/11) -Waitress (Based on the movie of the same name about a small town waitress who bakes pies) All completely different vibes/genres of musicals and all filmed live. Edit: also the camps are loosely based off real theatre camps; stage door manor and French woods.

@neonoires

I touched on this on patreon but as a theater kid myself and someone who still works in costumes for theater, it's really life or death for a lot of people. I grew up as a queer (I didn't know it yet) Black girl in Arkansas and theater is where I met the only people I felt were like me. It has saved people's lives because it's given them a sense of community. I and a lot of others have been lucky enough to relocate to bigger cities, I moved to NYC and I come across so many people from all over the place who found home in theater. Besides the emotional aspect, it's also a cutthroat business, especially for performers. I used to take ballet and theater classes and from a young age you have to essentially be picked apart so there might be some sort of complex there. It can get toxic and that's something to talk about for sure. Finally, the essence of theater... moreso musicals is the fact that it's corny and unserious. People say theater is a dying art anyway, especially in America so there's this feeling of being close knit with people who love this silly little art form.

Y'all might also enjoy CAMP (2003). It's similar but with more scenes from established musicals (yet, done by kids).

As a theater person, growing up in theater and currently working in the largest and most well known off-Broadway theater, this movie is nostalgic and incredibly irritating all at the same time. While all of the characters are theater tropes (the weird hippie drama teacher, the egotistical director that’s not talented enough as a performer, the theater teacher that doesn’t know anything about the subject they’re teaching, etc), they are not an exaggeration. I’ve encountered every one of them at some point lol Y’all’s reaction to their antics is as it should be. Cringe, annoyance but also hopeful that they reach their goals 😂. Glad y’all got the chance to see this one and enjoyed it more than you thought you would. Ayo, once again is brilliant but everyone played their roles (a little too) well! 😂👏🏾
