Theater Gone Wrong: The Night Ramin Karimloo Skipped a Scene in Les Misérables

…but was very calm about it.
It's easy to lose track of time in the middle of a three-hour musical drama. ''Les Misérables''' Ramin Karimloo - who starred in the show's latest Broadway revival as Jean Valjean - learned that lesson the hard way. Or rather, his Cosette (Samantha Hill) did when her onstage father failed to appear for one of their more contentious scenes. Clearly the mistake didn't hurt his career, seeing as he's back on Broadway this season in ''Anastasia''. But for at least a night, the superpower of telepathic apologizing would have really come in handy.

Annabelle Lam yeah we like to tell a story around my high school about how that almost happened to the guy playing fester when we did Addams family. It's funny now, but I honestly don't know what we would have done!!!!!

Years ago when I was in a production of Midsummer Night's dream, we had something happen that was basically this amped up to 11. Not just one person skipped a scene, but we all _collectively forgot a scene existed._ It wasn't even like, a filler-y scene either. This was a plot-relevant one and as soon as we finished the scene that was supposed to be after it, the guy playing Oberon turned to me and said "We just skipped a scene, didn't we?" Apparently nobody watching the show noticed, but boy did everyone backstage notice!

It's always funny how sometimes you can make the biggest blunders and the audience hardly notices. You're backstage freaking out about what just happened and afterwards you talk to people and they're just like huh? 😅

I remember being in a show once where for the matinees they skipped intermission but didn't bother to tell any of the cast, so i was taking my sweet time getting ready to start the scene after intermission, another cast member comes up to me in the dressing room and says "hey, you do realize they're waiting on you to start act 2" and I literally book it up the stairs on stage, I think I was out of breath for that entire first scene but I think it added a little something to the character. oh how I love the theater.

for me, it wasn’t that we forgot (i was in ensemble), it was that the stylists and the other person (i last done a show a year ago and i’m not interested in theatre that much anymore) that didn’t tell us to go on, although we only performed for 2 nights (and the first night we were nearly late and the 2nd night we didn’t miss the scene but was late for it), on the second night i already knew what song we had to start leaving the dressing room to go to the wings and i was telling them we need to go or we will be late and they were like “we don’t have to go yet” and i literally heard the start of our scene abd i said “that’s our scene we need to go” but then ppl were whispering (we were still on the upper floor) and she kept telling us to be quiet (and actually being louder than us) so that also held us up by another minute.

Lol this happened to me in a school production except it was the other person who had not come on stage. It was meant to be a big drunk argument scene where it was just us two shouting at each other in a bedroom. I panicked right before I was meant to go on (he was meant to be stood next to me when we went on). Thankfully there was a mirror in on the set and as I was playing drunk I shouted my lines at it and acted like it was saying stuff back to me. I was kinda humiliated but the audience couldn't tell ahahah

During the final dress rehearsal when I did _Les Mis_ (I was, among other ensemble roles, Babet, one of Thénadier's gang), I was hanging in the green room during "A Heart Full of Love." I'm in costume and ready to go, but for some reason, after two months of rehearsals, I have suddenly convinced myself that there is an entire song between "Heart Full of Love" and "Attack on Rue Plumet." So those lovely finals notes play, I smile (because it's pretty), and then everyone else in the room just kind of looks at me in confusion. Then those violent strings play and I make a hundred yard dash to launch myself onstage literally just in time to gasp "HE KEEPS HIMSELF TO HIMSELF HE'S STAYING CLOSE TO GROUND" and the look on Thénadier's face is a priceless combination of relief, shock, and utter bewilderment. I don't think I've ever run that fast before or since.
@leahvillanueva5402

That’s AMAZING. To be fair, I believe in the original Les Mis production there WAS a short song between “Heart Full of Love” and “Attack on Rue Plumet” between Eponine and Montparnasse, but most productions today cut that one out. So maybe you daydreamed yourself into that version ... despite your months of rehearsal, lol.

I always read the script backstage so I knew exactly where we were and when my scene started. One time though another actor missed his mark and we had to improvise the rest of the scene. It was so obvious that the audience started to laugh and we laughed our way through the scene, too.

I was once in a production of a play that is set in a hospital and me and another character were trying to improvise whilst waiting for one of the other actors. It had been about 3 minutes and he had still missed his cue so I decided (I was a nurse) to improvise going to check on him, it turns out he was rushing to get on stage, had tripped and fractured his ankle, luckily for the character he was playing he had to have a cast on his foot and was in a wheelchair...whoops...

Oh God, something like this happened to me in high school. We did a production of The Messenger by Markus Zusak, and I played Markus (a fictionalized version of him). I would sit in a chair on a raised section upstage and pretend to be writing out the play as it was being performed. Occasionally I would briefly introduce a scene during a quick change, but one time I introduced the next scene and I noticed everyone was taking a little longer to get in their places. I had gotten my cues mixed up, which forced everyone to collectively skipped over an entire scene. Thankfully it wasn't a very well-known play so no-one noticed. I didn't realise till after we finished, but we all had a good laugh about it afterwards 😄

We were doing a production at this theatre camp. Two kids who had clearly just been sent there because it was some form of summer camp were playing two of the main roles. I thought they did good, given the circumstances( the one kid was really funny, especially being as young as he was ), but there’s this one scene where two other characters are hiding behind a rock and the two kids have to come in. They completely missed their entrance and we couldn’t really do anything without it being at least somewhat noticeable to the audience, so, we were just waiting for them to make their entrance on their own while the two other actors improvised onstage 😂

STORY TIME I was playing the Mayor in this stupid production recently and I was onstage as ensemble to dance in the song stage right. I exit up stage right and a scene change is supposed to occur. I have to enter down stage left by the time that's done. The way the theatre was laid out, you have to exit and run through the lobby, past the bathrooms, then through the green room and to the wings. Here I am in heels and a dress walking offstage...and the second I step behind the curtain I'm booking it as fast as possible. I managed to make it just in time to freeze in place.

Omg I had a similar experience except for me we had to cross behind the set to get to stage left from stage right, but I'd never performed at this venue before and didnt know so I'm frantically wandering the backstage halls of the theatre, just seconds away from my entrance, in a dog mask, (dog boy in sideshow haha) and finally a crew member goes "DEWD CROSS BEHIND THE SET" and I BOLT, as silently as possible, making it on just in time

Once I was in a play and this one girl missed her cue every time. For months, every single time we rehearsed that scene, I would say my line and - silence. She wouldn’t come onstage. I recited my line again, louder. Nothing. She was just chatting backstage instead of paying attention. She had to be prompted to go onstage by the director _during_ our shows because she just wouldn’t pay attention. The night of our very last performance, I politely told her to pay attention to the scene and let this last show go smoothly. There was a fifteen-second gap between my line and her entrance that night. ;-;

when i was in into the woods as little red riding hood, there's a scene where cinderella and i exchange a few lines and it cues the sound people to play the giant's prerecorded lines. they were listening for two of our lines in specific in a row to cue their part. cinderella messed up and said a line prematurely, which meant we couldn't continue with our cues to the sound people and just stared, frozen and fearful, at the ceiling until the sound people got the hint and finally played the lines. it was a solid ten seconds of just. silence.

When my high school theatre did Wendy and Peter Pan last year, one of my friends said that for once we actually have everything ready on time. Halfway through the show a lamp ends up breaking and so we had to add ten minutes to intermission so we could clean up the glass. And the spot that all the glass was on is where the actor for peter was supposed to lay down so we had to be really careful.

I once did a musical theatre recital wherein I got changed into the absolute wrong thing but also miscalculated the number of songs I had in between to change. I ended up missing the song where I was heavily featured and had to apologize profusely to my cast-mates later.

During a production of The Miracle Worker at my high school not only did one actor have to read his lines from bits of props (because he was a last minute replacement), the Mother ended up puking blood halfway through the show (offstage, during a dinner scene). Our Anne decided that the show was over at that point and pulled my off stage with a pitcher of water to do the final scene of the show (I was Hellen and had no idea what was going on at that point). I have others from college, but this is the worst one to date.

I was in a production of the Crucible. I was in a scene with three people but one of them didn’t show up. My first line in the scene is to call the persons name, and I didn’t know she wasn’t there yet, so I call out her name and walk on stage. I realize she isn’t there and then freak. It’s so funny. The other person and I basically just did some improv and then carried the scene. It was so stressful, but looking back it is super funny. The really terrible thing too I’d that the girl who missed only had that one scene, so for that one performance she wasn’t even on stage so she didn’t come out for curtain call.
