We discuss the new Broadway play, "Seminar," with actors Alan Rickman, Lily Rabe, and Hamish Linklater, and the playwright Theresa Rebeck. The play, about an upscale writing seminar led by jaded professional author Rickman, and attended by ambitious aspiring writers (Linklater and Rabe), is a must-see for Rickman fans and for anyone who's ever aspired to accomplish anything in the arts. We also discuss Rebeck's new TV series SMASH.
Taped: 01-13-2012
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

A snarky, brutally-telling-it-like-it-is, but ultimately complex & secretly vulnerable teacher...hmm...this seems very familiar. Anyone else, seeing the parallels here?

I agree with Linklater...humiliating a student is not always the best path. Too many teacher/directors are just frustrated performers or just downright cruel individuale.

The male interviewer, some of his questions I'm just like... He doesn't get it. Even still, a great conversation.

What was wrong with the male interviewer? Was he stoned/drunk/unprepared/frustrated? It confuses me how someone can speak without thinking so often in an interview.

Thank you! This is an incredible play. I can't believe these were the questions he lined up. These artists deserve a better conversation than this.

Is it because of the seminar?
@xored8813

@@lilyevans4244 it was because of Lily’s mother, who has worked with Hamish. It was in a recent interview here on RU-vid with Lily

.. of reality resulted from real life sexism. This play is just one of many other productions think that they are reflecting the reality without understanding the roots of the problem. I find it so sad that even intellectual writers might also ignorant in these kinds of issues. Guess everybody really needs sociology 101. Well having said all that, my thing is still Alan Rickman, so amazingly beautiful and awesome. End of discussion.

Your comment (and the first half) is so true. Even Alan (a self proclaimed) didn't seem to get it.

I'm like shock seeing Alan saying the F word but find it such a turn on. Ok Im hopeless. But I don't like the way the writer answers about sexist point in her play, because she just takes it personally and doesnt understand the article doesnt mean to blame her in particular about sexism but as a contributor to feed the whole sexism within the industry going on, the stereotype of female not as talented and have to sleep around to get promoted. Whether or not its coming from reality its the kind
