This opening is a reverse pirc. Wondeing if you could have played it as a reverse Austrian attack. Funnily enough, in the pirc the e file push is always the critical line too.

@@2019inuyasha yeh it seems like F5 is over extending when you're down a tempo 😔. Best line was played!

It's funny, when I googled "austrian attack reverse chess", all the results are the Pirc destroying it :D Perhaps when they're both reversed, the Pirc is the one getting destroyed.

you should always keep in mind that white can go back to a d4 line anytime since you certainly don't want to play d5-d4 this early and white has a lot of pieces supporting d4, so if your line against 1 d4 sidelines and 1 d4 c4 lines does not include nc6 so early then you should not play 2..nc6 here because after 3 d4 you get into a chigorin type of piece development that is very rigid in terms of pawn breaks, you can't play c5 now and you certainly won't get e5 anytime soon so you are stuck with just piece play which doesn't really work here. the most principled move is 2..c5 which is an improved version of what you are trying to achieve, and that is to play nc6 and e5 taking the entire center if allowed but to have the pawn on c5 first before nc6. white can still play d4, but now you already got c5 in and that means a lot because it does put some pressure on d4 instead of just having nc6 and no pawn there on c5. none of the lines here are simple but they have a logical thread that connects them together so you should be able to figure them out if you forgot some of the details. to make this short, if you don't play the chigorin (1 d4 d5 2 c4 nc6) or an analog of the nimzovich line ( 1 d4 nc6) as a main repertoire against 1 d4 then you should not play 1 g3 d5 2 nf3 nc6 because after 3 d4 you don't have any easy to prepare pawn breaks, but 2..c5 first, then nc6 and e5 is the goal if allowed.

Thanks for the detailed comment, Unrequited! I did feel like I'd trapped in my c-pawn somewhat in the game :D I've started playing the KID against d4, so perhaps there's a version of the KID against 1. Nf3.

The line I was seeing at the end when the queen had "no other move" was Rxb6, cxb6, Rc1+ Kd2, Qxb2+, Ke1 (I think, otherwise maybe the rook comes down or the queen checks again and then the rook comes in). I didn't get to a clear end of the calculation because the opponent disconnected but I can see there were options they needed to calculate. You used a huge amount of time in the first 7 moves. Did you find out if the opening had a name. I'm wondering if it is just the "modern" opening. If you've not seen it before it might be worth knowing about.

Wow, that's very nice actually. Again, I was blind to this. I think I would have blocked with Rc5 after Rc1+ to avoid the queen having Qxb2+. Lichess calls it the King's Indian Attack and @tombaron2505 calls it a reverse pirc. It's less silly than I thought during the game. Yeah, I need to work on time management in 15+10 games. I'm fast when playing 10+0 but I get a little complacent with the increment.

@@pifflesticks Rc5 doesn't work I don't think. Rxb6 is already on the board, so Rc5 at this point just allows Qxb2+ Kd2 is forced, and white has got away with your dark squared bishop, whilst if you are suggesting Rxb3, cxb3, Rc1 and then you block with Rc5, of course this just blinders your rook to Rxc5+. I am only writing these comments as I find it terribly hard to find these resources for my opponent during games that I play so it is good practice for me to calculate lines in post game analysis. Great to have an update from you. I hope it's not quite so long until the next one. Take care

I appreciate you taking the time to think these lines out. Numbering our moves would probably help here. Your line was 1. Rxb6, cxb6 2. Rc1+ Kd2 3. Qxb2+, Ke1. I was indeed suggeting the line you mentioned second: 2... Rc5 and I think you're missing that there is a black pawn now on b6, so 3. Rxc5 bxc5. I'm back, don't worry, I'll make another video soon :D

@@pifflesticks fantastic, thanks for the reply and adding move numbers. Yes, cxb6 brings a new pawn to support c5. This is why you are higher rated than me.

You're welcome. Ahh, that's not fair; I missed a lot and never even considered the rook taking the bishop, so I have to work on that.
