in fact, it is almost impossible to get a sword from your back, that's a movie thing, no one did that in real life.

It’s a shame that a lot of people expected season 2 to be like season 1, with many dropping it because it was too ‘boring.’ It just goes to show how most of the mainstream just wants action and can’t appreciate enough slower shows with great characters, writing and development

it is both tragic but also very endearing that Thorfinn is tiny. tragic, because it's probably the result of how poorly nourished he was as a kid... but also look at him!! Einar is like a whole head taller than him! Thorfinn is my boy. sure he's a mass murderer, but also, he's just a little guy. I love him. also, man... I already have Some Stuff I want to say about all of this, but I don't want to sway any thoughts on anything too early. a lot of the stuff we're seeing now gets colored by later information. it's just too early to get into it. though I am happy that I can say, the early prediction that Pater would be an asshole is blessedly wrong. and thank god. shoutout to Pater, I love that guy. anyway, I think for me, season 1 really did feel like groundwork. the plot was mechanically/thematically immaculate, but one of the things that season 1 is explicitly constructed to comment on, is the way that warrior culture leaves men isolated, even amongst groups they're affiliated with. they are alienated from concepts like actual love, friendship, or companionship. so in season 1, we never had any warmth between the central characters. probably the closest relationships we got to examine were parent/child tragedies (Thors and Thorfinn, Ragnar and Canute), toxic parental animosity (Askeladd and Thorfinn, Sweyn and Canute), or friendships that failed to connect (Thors and Thorkell, Askeladd and Bjorn). none of these relationships were functional, even when they were close, and the point is that the stoicism of these men prevents them from attaining some of the most valuable connections that they ever could've had in their lives. it's extremely well done, but it's also extremely bitter medicine. already, in season 2, we're seeing a remedy to that. Einar is here, and from the way he cared so much about his mother and his younger sister, you can tell that he's a very warmhearted person. season 1 identified a problem, and season 2 is poised and ready to examine what the solution to that problem might be. this season is tangibly different... and it's about to use its time exceptionally well. oh, and I don't think Einar was trying to be mean to the horse... I think I would be miserable too, if I was one old horse being made to drag heavy logs.😔 also, also, I just want to point out the observation Einar made about the retainers because it's a really good one! he says that the retainers have to serve a master because, while they are free men, they don't own any land. it's as Einar says: "they're halfway to being slaves themselves! they're just making sure there's someone beneath them by bullying us!" this line is incredibly true, and a great point about why some low men on the totem pole would rather emphasize the disparity between themselves and other lower class people, rather than focusing on their common ground with others who are nearly in the same boat. it's easy to punch down. and oh my god I forgot how early we meet Olmar... he is a terrible weenie cringefail son to us all. what an idiot, he's great. once again, Without Love never fails to say something poignant about the contents of the episode. particularly in juxtaposition with the specific conversation that ends the episode. Einar speaks of how his village was attacked once, and then attacked again. he lost family, both times. he doesn't care what nationality the men are, all warriors are beasts to him. they destroy without any regard for the value of the lives they're ruining. and it's striking how both Einar and Thorfinn witnessed a burning village in their youth, but while one boy gained a resolute distaste for warriors, the other boy swallowed down that distaste and joined the warriors in their rampant destruction. Thorfinn and Einar are of a similar age, but they've arrived in the same place via extremely different roads. and you can see the difference in every aspect of their minds and bodies. the lyrics to Without Love feel like they refer mostly to Thorfinn this time around, but specifically through the lens of Einar's history. "there is no freedom without love" is both indicative of how to rob someone of their freedom, and indicative of how to gain it back. and even in the case of the retainers... they cement Thorfinn and Einar's enslaved status by trying to tear them down, berate them, and dehumanize them. this is how they ensure that these slaves are not free. also, when Einar asks if Thorfinn is asleep, and Thorfinn is shown to still be awake... that shot of him lying on his side, with his back to Einar and his eyes open, is very much a parallel to the shot of Askeladd, still awake, as Thorfinn held the sword over him... deciding whether or not to kill him in his sleep. in both cases, they know what they probably deserve based on what they've done.

also, I feel like the combination of Thorfinn and Askeladd is a superb examination of culpability when it comes to the cycle of abuse, nature vs. nurture, and the progression of a child into an adult. we watched Thorfinn progress from this very angry, frustrated child, into a young adult who both makes his own decisions at every step of the way, but is also being led and manipulated down a violent path, by an adult with way more life experience than him, with very little opportunity to be diverted from his destructive trajectory. we are all primed to see Thorfinn sympathetically. meanwhile, Askeladd is very easy to blame for the things he does. I mean... they are his decisions, and he is a fully adult person with full agency. and yet, his story begins so much like Thorfinn's. his trajectory was also nearly impossible to imagine diverting. based on the culture of the time, and his circumstances, how could he have turned out differently? Thorfinn and Askeladd both represent a specific type of tragedy, where a person flings themselves deep into ruin without even realizing that they're doing it, or how they're doing it. they make all their own choices, but they were never taught how to know what's really good for them. and so many people get hurt along the way... you watch them choose to hurt people. where does that decision truly come from? and then all of this is contrasted with Thors, who started out just as violent, but proves that it is possible for men like that to decide to do better, all on their own, without being taught. there is logical, observable reasoning for why someone would want to change themselves into a better person. even in one of the most violent cultures/eras in history, these values can still be discovered independently. they can be innately understood. Thors is proof that there is a way to do this, and you can start at any time. but Thorfinn and Askeladd display just how steep the barrier is. how insurmountable the obstacles may seem in getting there. Askeladd literally didn't survive it. and it's still worth putting in the work. when did Thorfinn go from a child and victim, to a fully autonomous person who is responsible for all of his own decisions? the difficulty is that there really isn't a hard line. there's no singular moment you can point to, where that switch flipped. he's always been both, and if Askeladd is any indication, he always will be. these things will always affect the both of them. it's built into their bones. it will never stop informing the things they do.

But in Medieval times there was no own rooms, families living under same roof, so you could not avoid seeing or hearing that (it was more natural than today), not to mention whole "Wedding night act witnessing" thing , where both families cheering you on beside the bed :D

Season 2 is what put the show on the radar where it is today. you're in for a ride

Thorfinn got enslaved as punishment for hurting Canute in his fit of rage at Askeladd's death, but seeing this type of master he got, we really see how they went easy on him. Canute never held any grudge against Thorfinn, instead feels guilty. Im so hyped for s2!!!

About the Openings you can totally watch them and for all animes by the way. Let's be honest here. None of us see any spoilers in openings as long as we don't watch the spoiled episode and then and only then you notice there was a spoiler in the OP. I'll take a popular example. Attack on titan OP5 (season 3 part 2) had many many spoilers and a HUGE one: Armin. You know exactly what I mean Luke. It was in front of my eyes all the time, I carefully rewatched the OP at each epsiode and I noticed it only after it happened. And same things for all animes I watched. Openings are meant to be watched and to be enjoyed at the beginning of each episode. Of course you do as you prefer but there is nothing wrong in watching them, just what I mean here and you'll not get spoiled.

Vinland sage season 2 is the real masterpiece you are looking for. For me i did not realy like season 1, but after seing a early spoiler of season 2 i found out this is a season with a REAL story. And after watching season 2 I apreaciated season 1. But you need both. You complain about it being to nice but leave those thoughts. This season is one to enjoy and lean back. Its not that action packed as season 1. Dont search for your normal red flags.

I think that the first season is really good, but the second season is much better. It makes me feel so many emotions. I would never rate it lower than 9/10.

At the end of the video you're summarising why this season is so good. You're left there you don't know where it will bring you. You have no idea at this point how they could even answer to your questions as this is a situation where the chances of seeing former characters seem unlikely to happen knowing the realistic aspect of Vinland saga. And that's what is this slave arc. Like a slave you have no idea how you will be treated tomorrow just like you can't guess how the next episode will treat you. I'm very confident that you will love this season. It's the best one.

To answer your question of what happened to thorfinn, without spoiling anything. Remember the last episode of season 1, askellad asks thorfinn "what are you going to do when I die. Don't stay stuck in one place." And then thorfinn looked empty and slashed at Canute. Thorfinn right now is just kind of like an empty shell. He doesn't have a purpose for living after living with the purpose of hunting askellad for so long, and he's been sold into slavery for attacking Canute. So he's kinda just an empty shell or a husk, doing his work and not having a purpose in life or emotions to aim at something. This also is very much setting the tone for thorfinn this season, which is going to be a lot of looking inward and self discovery on both his past and future and who he is and who he wants to be.

The sword thing is funny. Historically no one ever had a sword on there back for that exact reason. For most weapons it is impossible to draw a sword from your back.

Unfortunately, the Vinland Saga is limited to only a prologue. Now everything will be different. If the first season is like Berserk, with an abundance of battle scenes and cruelty, then the second season is like Claymore with emotional scenes and experiences of the heroes.

He said why he was angry, he thinks the woman he spent the night with only slept with him so she and her Family could leach off his Father's fortune rather than liking him as a person, basically he thinks she's a gold digger.

I got the same feeling from season 2 - I quickly realized that I'd enjoy it way more than season 1. I think the catalyst was that I always wanted S1 to focus on Thorfinn at least a little bit and S2 almost immediately puts him in the center of the plot.

Thorfinn isn't actually that much older than he was in season 1. He was 18 at the end of season 1, now he is 19. So it makes sense that he hasn't grown that much taller.

Season 2 is very slow and introduces a lot of new characters so it might get a little confusing but the dialogue and characters in this season are really great so just pay attention to their little interactions and enjoy.

I think the word "invested" is the right one. I loved season 1 but was much more invested in season 2

I will say this Luke, I think you will LOVE Season 2 way more than Season 1. Season 2 is a master class when it comes to character development, especially with Thorfinn. I personally thought Thorfinn was one of the least interesting characters in Season 1, but he quickly becomes one of the most interesting characters this season. Season 2 is far less action-packed and focuses more on fleshing out each and every character…and strangely, I frigging adored it. Season 1 was great, but Season 2 was a masterpiece and I get the feeling Season 3 will be legendary when we eventually get it.

This season is almost like a bildungsroman, it's REALLY about character development, and people who truly appreciate good writing love this season. Mindless ooga booga caveman brain people who're only after war and action, mock this season and call it Farmland Saga. I say bullshit, this season is so so well written and wonderful, it's absolutely brilliant.
