Legendary Dressmaker Thelma Madine is taking on some Gypsy trainees...
Known for creating some of the most elaborate outfits ever (as seen in Big Fat Gypsy Weddings), Thelma needs to expand to keep up with demand. So to give something back to the community that has made her name, she is taking on inexperienced trainee Gypsy and Traveller girls to help create dream dresses for her demanding clientele.
This series follows Thelma and her Gypsy trainees for six months, from recruitment to successfully completing their mentorship.
But with no prior work experience, and some of the girls having little or no literacy skills, it's a huge undertaking. Can these young girls really learn to make such intricate dresses in just six months?
In Episode 1:
Thelma invests in a brand new factory and recruits 10 new trainees, all of whom are gypsies and travellers.
Hopefuls include 16 year old headstrong Margaret from a local trailer site, who doesn’t like being told what to do regardless of who’s telling her, 17 year old Kathleen who’s domestic duties include looking after her 10 nieces and nephews and 16 year old Roseanne who desperately lacks education and thinks Lady Gaga worships the devil.
For the gypsy girls it’s the opportunity of a lifetime but for existing staff it feels like a serious set-back…

I think maturity is lacking in the group. I think getting girls that are "older" would be pretty hard being that they marry and have children so young. I would not have picked the girls that she picked. It seems that she picked the pretty, wild, stylish, loud girls not the quite calm girls.

@@beckyshell4649 There were a few (let's call them) _ladies_ who applied, so I believe it was more than the 2 she chose. Those ladies _want_ security & possible freedom. However, it was Thema's goal to get the young ones with a skill. It was a double edged sword for sure. I absolutely agree about some of the wild ones. Look at English gal, minding her business, trying to learn & getting bullied! She needed more of HER!

I HATE that their parents leave the eldest daughter in charge of all her younger siblings and they practically have to raise them themselves. It’s not the child’s job to raise by our kids because you couldn’t be bothered to use protection or anything and so you just keep popping them out

I teach high school in the US and recently in education we’ve been talking more about “soft skills” and how invaluable they are in the work place. I see a lot of comments about these girls’ behavior and dress at a job interview, but you have to remember they have lived their whole lives in an insular community that has discouraged them from working for generations. They’re also encouraged to leave school at very early ages, and most of the men in their lives probably don’t work “regular” jobs either. There’s no one for them to learn from when it comes to how to act professionally.

I love this that she's giving them a chance to become a dress maker give them some kind of self-worth and self-esteem for themselves even though that's their tradition as gypsies of getting married and stuff but get them more self-worth they don't have to you know get married a young age and save money by their own house or car you know give them an opportunity to be something more and God bless this woman here for doing that and I pray that every 10 girls stick with it get a job working with her

Thelma is amazing! Those girls are so lucky to be on this course. I never judge anyone because I know how painful it is to be judged. I hope they can graduate and make a good life for themselves. I love the dresses Thelma makes they are truly works of art. I wish everyone success and happiness.

What is the most shocking/sad thing to me is how the 16/17 year olds still seemed to be emotionally immature. I'm guessing that's what happens when you haven't had any structured training or education since you were 10 or 11 years old. It's not their fault obviously but to me it's disgusting that some cultures still believe in keeping girls sheltered and dependent. They done hard to go to college or be career women but dammit at least give the girls options and allow them to learn and grow.

Thelma is such an inspirational and giving woman. She has never forgotten where the backbone of her success began, from humble beginnings and The Traveller. She found a niche in where others never gave a chance … and has giving back into the community of The Traveller, giving girls these golden opportunities. It’s also good to see she has embraced some of the travellers “ bling” in her home😃 … and I wish her well in all of her adventures in life- somehow, I think there will be more!!

I come from an English gypsy family and love my culture, my father wanted me to stay in education and I did but got bullied vey bad by no gypsy people to the point it made me suicidal but I rose above the hate

I can’t believe Thelma’s partner didn’t put together a breakdown of costs to renovate in advance of actually starting. My hubs is a contractor and puts together punch lists and prices everything out in advance of doing projects, it’s a standard practice. And she budgeted $10k for the renovation and it’s $36k over, that’s still not $50k. It doesn’t add up to me.

I think this is wonderful, just a little confused how she’s only made 50,000 pounds in 15 years of dressmaking. These dresses go for many thousands of dollars. Prior to moving to a big space with more overhead, she worked in what looked like a very small space with handful of employees. She lives in a huge house with lots of expensive furniture etc…so is this some way of drumming up stress and chaos for views or is she a horrible money manager.

Great idea ! It could do wonders in the gypsy/traveler community close by. It would also mean the world to these women. Imagine being the face of fashion in their community! That would be rather rewarding, especially over being a basic gypsy house wife. The opportunity to open their minds is also on the table.

This is an amazing opportunity - for anyone who has a passion for design, and the traveler community won't have to go outside their community for wedding dresses. Being a skilled dressmaker doesnt mean you can't be a good wife, mother and housekeeper. Family will always come first. Thelma is doing a great thing.
